“Fabulous property”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2015

We had a great week at Stag Cottage. The property is superb, a wonderful restoration of a listed building in the grounds of a country estate.

Response from the manager Hi, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review of your recent stay at Stag Cottage. We are so pleased that you had a great time and enjoyed staying in the grounds of Melmerby Hall. I hope that we can welcome you back to our cottages for a future holiday. Best regards, Christine, Charlie & Jilly

“Amazing time at Stag Cottage”

Reviewed 4 May 2015

A group of 4 of us travelled up to Stag Cottage for a few days of r&r. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The cottage is beautiful and set in wonderful grounds. There's plenty of space for a group of 4 and the decor very welcoming. There are some fantastic walks and great places to eat near by and others a short drive away. This is a great location for a holiday which I couldn't recommend highly enough. Nick Tiplady

Response from the manager Hi, Thank you for taking your time to write this very positive review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Stag Cottage in the splendid grounds of Melmerby Hall. Melmerby is a beautiful quiet Cumbrian village which is just perfect for R&R! If we can be of any help next time you are planning a trip then please do not hesitate to contact us. Kind regards from Charles, Christine and Jilly.

“Cosy country cottage in tranquil setting”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2015

Stag Cottage is tucked away in the grounds of Melmerby Hall, but has easy walking access to the village facilities. The cottage is tastefully decorated in traditional country cottage style with all the modern amenities we expect today. The beds were super comfy and the bedding was the quality you would expect in a good hotel. The wood burner added to the homely cottage ambiance. We all loved it and look forward to returning for another visit. Jilly, Christine and Charles were very helpful and made every effort to make sure we enjoyed our stay.

Response from the manager Hi, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in the cosy Stag Cottage and made use of the wood burner. Melmerby really is a lovely village surrounded by amazing fells. We would love to welcome you back to stay with us again and we will pass on your very positive comments to Jilly and her team. Kind Regards Christine, Charles and Jilly

“excellent cottage”

Reviewed 12 Mar 2015

my husband , myself and our flat coated retriever have just returned from a weekend at Stag Cottage our only problem was having to come home! We have stayed at many cottages but this has to be one of our favourites.Booking was so easy and Christine was so friendly, all so straightforward and effortless. When we arrived in the village it was so pretty with two good tea rooms. When we drove through the arch entrance to the estate we were very impressed. The grounds were beautiful and well tended with an abundance of snowdrops. The cottage was full of character but had all mod cons. Bed was one of the comfiest ever and the furnishings throughout were of high quality. We received a lovely welcome pack which made a first day shopping trip for essentials unnecessary. We loved the fact that we didn't have to use the car. Wonderful walk in the grounds, our dog loved the stream! But lots of excellent walks from the village. We hope to return soon.

Response from the manager Hi, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a friendly review about Stag Cottage. We are delighted to hear that you all enjoyed your visit and look forward to welcoming you again sometime soon! Thank you and best regards from us all, Christine, Charlie and Jilly

We had a fabulous 3 nights stay at Stag Cottage. I booked this cottage for my husband 50th birthday for us to be all together, with his mum and our 9 years old daughter + our little puppy Jessie...we have enjoyed every minute of our stay. To Jilly, a big thank you for all your help, specially about the logs.. sorry about that as my husband did really had a great time looking after the log fire, that's why he had used a FEW logs!!. Because we enjoyed our stay that much, a week later, I had booked our next stay this Christmas for 5 nights in one of the Rowley's cottage ( Riverain), can't wait!! Again..thank you! Regards, Hutchinson family xx

Response from the manager Hi, thank you very much for your kind comments regarding Stag Cottage and we always provide lots and lots of logs so that the fires can be as big as your husband would like! We are looking forward to welcoming you all to Riverain this coming December! Thank you again for taking the time out to leave a review for your visit on Trip Advisor. Best regards, Christine, Charlie and Jilly

“Relaxing stay in a beautuful cottage”

Reviewed 29 Nov 2014

We have just returned from a three night break at Stag Cottage . Everything was perfect from start to finish. Everyone has been so efficient and helpful in ensuring that we enjoyed our stay. The cottage was warm when we arrived, a generous welcome pack was much appreciated. Lovely wood burner with plentiful logs. Beautifully decorated. A wonderfully comfortable and relaxing break, with every attention to detail from the managers and staff. Thank you very much. We would love to return.

Response from the manager Hi, Thank you for taking the time to write such a great review of your recent stay at Stag Cottage. We are so pleased that you both had such a nice time at Stag Cottage and we hope to be able to welcome you back again next year! With all our best wishes, Christine, Charlie & Jilly

“Perfect holiday cottage- everything we could wish for”

Reviewed 18 Oct 2014

We stayed 2 nights in Stag cottage, travelling from Lancashire to meet with friends from W Lothian. We were a party of 4 adults and 2 dogs and the cottage was just the right size. Melmerby Hall was adjoining and there was a connecting door which I assume would be opened if used for a large party (there was a large family gathering whilst we were there) The cottage was beautifully furnished with all mod cons. Bedrooms and bathrooms very luxurious. The provisions left for us were top quality and very generous. We arranged to have food dropped off by Jilly which we heated up on both nights. The food was brilliant with big portions and retaurant quality. Location was lovely with plenty of walks. we were lucky with the weather, but if it had rained there was a great porch/drying area. The only disapointment was that the village pub had recently closed and was for sale/lease. We are planning to meet up and do the same thing next year!

Response from the manager Hi, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a great review of your break at Stag Cottage. We really appreciate your feedback on the cottage and also how much you enjoyed Jilly's meals! We really hope that the pub will re-open again soon as it's a big miss to the village and our guests! We hope to be able to welcome you back again next year (and hopefully with a re-opened pub!) Best regards, Christine, Charlie and Jilly

“Fantastic weekend retreat”

Reviewed 29 Apr 2014

My husband and I spent a weekend in the Stag Cottage with our three dogs. I contacted the owners to book the accommodation and received a very warm and prompt response. The booking process was very easy, the cottage was exactly as described and when we got there everything was beautifully arranged for us; the dinning table was set, the fire was ready, the place was very warm and beautifully clean. There was everything you may need to hand and we felt very well looked after from the moment we arrived. The area outside the cottage is very well maintained and the gardens are immaculately kept and very welcoming. The location is fantastic, very private, secure and surrounded by a quiet and picturesque village with a fabulous bakery opened by Prince Charles and serving delicious, homemade and organic food. Their scones are the best I have ever had; I strongly recommend date & walnut ones. There are some very good walks in the area and around the Estate and lots of attractions nearby. It is also situated a very short distance from the Lake District therefore very suitable for daily outings to the main attractions there, yet benefits from being a much quieter and tranquil place. At the time of our stay it was so quiet that we have only met one person on our three hour long morning walk. The cottage is beautifully decorated and I admire the owners impeccable taste. It has that feeling of luxury combined with coziness. There are two double bedrooms and each has its own on-suite bathroom so it is suitable to share the cottage with another couple and still have the privacy. However, I found the price to be very reasonable for two people, it truly is a great value for money. We have had a wonderful, quiet and romantic couple of days at the cottage and could not thank the owners enough for the hospitality we have received.

Response from the manager Dear Eve Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at Stag Cottage. We would be absolutely delighted to welcome you all back for another visit! We love the scones & the lemon muffins from the Village Bakery too! Best regards Christine, Charlie and Jilly

“Beautiful Cottage - a home away from home”

Reviewed 24 Oct 2013

We have stayed in Stag Cottage over the past 3 years and it's become a home away from home for us and our children. The cottage is beautifully decorated with antiques whilst having all the luxuries such as great showers and very comfortable mattresses. It is located within beautiful grounds in the great village of Melmerby. We did a couple of great hikes directly from the cottage. We hope to be back soon!

“Luxury in the Lakes!”

Reviewed 9 Oct 2013

When we drove through the arched entranceway into the sweeping gardens, I knew it was going to be good... Stag Cottage adjoins Melmerby Hall in this picturesque Lakeland village. It was great not needing to use the car just walking up to the bakery for breakfast and bread in the morning, down to the village shop for the papers then the pub in the evening after a day out cycling and exploring the fells. We did not feel overlooked by Melmerby Hall's guests and enjoyed the privacy of our own garden, BBQ and parking area. We recommend the Fetherston arms in Kirkoswald for dinner & the Shepherd's Inn has great local beers.
