“It Just Gets Better”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2015

Everyone has heard the expression/idea that, " You can never go back", meaning that once you have visited a place and gained fond memories you should not go back for fear of ruining those memories with a lesser experience. Well, with the Watermill House, you can throw out that idea, because here each visit will just get better as you discover more of the details which make this property such a special, unique and delightful experience. Without going into the general observations I made in my first review in June of 2014 regarding the spacious and comfortable nature of this 4 bedroom, 3 bath chateau located conveniently close to charming villages and smack in the middle of the glorious French Alps, I would like to point out some of the smaller details which set this apart from and above similar vacation rentals in the area, or for that matter, the world. The first detail is sound. No traffic or road noise. No barking dogs. No crying babies. No arguing neighbors. Instead, when you step into the house you find the space filled with the delightfully soothing sound of the burbling trout stream which flows by meters from the windows. That sound defines the essence of living in The Watermill House-- a calm, soothing , restful, rural experience. Right along with that comes the fantastic views from the large opening windows which provide 360 degree views of the surrounding country and the spectacular mountains. The large bookcase is filled with many English language books, and there is a complete " Renters Manual" with all the details about the house systems. No need to go to the Tourist Office, the local guidebooks and maps are right here. The kitchen is full of every imaginably needed accessory and tool, and, wonder of wonders, the knives are all very sharp! When is the last time you found that in a vacation rental-- never, I'll wager. There is a clever system which automatically opens the under-sink trash bin lid when you open the door, eliminating the need to reach down and open the lid. Wonderful. Everything-- every latch, switch, door, appliance, etc., works properly. Attention to detail and maintenance are obviously a priority with the owner. Very important. The wood heater, like everything else, works and wood is furnished. The barbecue area down next to the stream, in its own stone structure, is great. Most importantly, the owner, Sarah. is a trained and experienced cordon blue chef who furnishes unbelievably delicious and diverse meals at a very reasonable price. Do not miss the opportunity to sample her cuisine. I could go on and on, but you get the message--- this place is very special.

“fabulous stay and brilliant hosts”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2015

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at le petit nid. The gite was very clean and comfortable and after a long days skiing provided a "home from home" atmosphere. Sarah and Seb were friendly and very accommodating hosts. We enjoyed an exceptional meal cooked for us by Sarah and Seb kept our glasses topped up throughout the evening. We would definitely recommend one of Sarah's meals as it was truly delicious and their company was second to none. We wish you both every success in the future, you are lovely people and deserve it. We hope to be back.

“I would go back tomorrow if I could”

We were only able to stay one night as on a road trip - but would happily go back again and again. It would be the perfect base to explore this beautiful area from. You can go out the door and just walk. Sarah provided an excellent meal in the evening (with wine) - and again a lovely breakfast. The accommodation was extremley comfortable and well thought out to provide everything you might need either for a one night stay - or if you were going to be there for a week. The company was excellent - with just the right amount of being friendly without being overly so

“An unforgettable place to stay”

Le Petit Nid is a VERY special place to stay. I came here with my husband and 7 month old baby for a 10 day holiday and we came home feeling as though we had been away for much longer. Such a stylish place in the most stunning mountain location. Ticks across the board... Great beds, bathrooms, linen, kitchen equipment, books... all the things you hope for and more! Stunning walks, with the local lake just at the bottom of the mountain. Luckily for us we arranged for Sarah to cook for us one night. Her food is made with so much care, passion and quality ingredients, we really were blown away. Sarah trained in Paris at Le Cordon Bleu and it really shows in her cooking. Sarah lives next door and is so discrete, but so welcoming if you need anything at all... She is a lovely person, and we would go back just to see her!

“Comfortable give in beautiful surroundings”

Reviewed 31 Aug 2014

We stayed for two weeks at Le Petit Nid. The chalet was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. It is spacious yet homely, with a good selection of books to fill any spare time. The owner, Sarah Gill, is particularly helpful with local recommendations of places to visit and restaurants at which to eat. We particularly liked the recommendation in Italy! A graduate of the Cordon Bleu school in Paris, Sarah offers to cook meals at a very reasonable price. We thoroughly recommend that guests take her up on this. The food is truly excellent and great value, served in relaxed surroundings. We love our food, yet cannot remember eating dishes as tasty. Wifi is included and this was particularly useful with the family.

Working with Sarah to arrange the rental was a delight! Prompt responses to emails, helpful suggestions and very professional in all exchanges. Highly recommended. Unfortunately the trip had to be cancelled and we never got to see the place. The cancellation had nothing to do with the owner nor the place; personal reasons kept me away from the area. With that said, organizing this stay was by far the best experience I've had so far. Stress free, no surprises!

“Superb! Hope to return!”

After traveling through Europe for 5 weeks I can honestly say that our 4nights here were the best! This little nest was fantastic. We were a group of 6 Australians, keen to cycle the famous cols around the Alpine area. The house was very well appointed, very comfortable and clean, and we were looked after so well by Sarah and Sebastian,we feel I like we were part of the family! From the moment we were greeted by Sebastian out the front until our fond farewell 4 days later, every moment spent here was amazing. We chose this place based on previous reviews and certainly we weren't disappointed. It's the only place we stayed in that the pictures in the online advertising matched so closely to what was actually there. The meals that Sarah prepared for us were the best we had during our trip, and the evening spent drinking her home brews around the fire was a real highlight! Sarah, we can't thank you and Sebastian enough for your help organizing the bike hire, printing our emails, and giving us so much advice on the area. We hope to return one day! If you plan on staying in the Savoie area, don't go past Le Petit Nid, you won't be disappointed.

“Charming experience”

Nice cozy place with very charming owners. We stayed only one night on our way to southern France but wished we could have stayed longer. Sarah prepared us excellent three course dinner including wine at 20 euros - we told her she could double the price and we would still book again next time when we come to the area. Cost value ratio with accommodation, food and service was excellent.

If it is peace and tranquility you are seeking in beautiful surroundings, with great hospitality, the Petit Nid is the place for you. As you wake to the sound of the stream in the garden trickling, it would be tempting to stay and relax in the garden with a glass of wine, but you will also be tempted to go and explore the beautiful mountain scenery which surrounds the Petit Nid. Sarah, your host has carefully restored this little gem with attention and care to make your stay comfortable in every way. She herself is the perfect host with the added qualification of being a cordon bleu cook, a skill she happily shares. If desired she will prepare you delicious three course meals for you in her home next door..................we can't wait to return.

“Fantasy Chateau in the French Alps”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2014

Have you ever dreamed of staying in an ancient stone house in a beautiful valley surrounded by snow capped mountains, with a lively trout stream bubbling by outside the windows? Would you like to stay in a secluded and private chateau which is a convenient distance from all the attractions of the French Alps? Do you appreciate renting from an owner who takes great pride in their property and the outstanding service they provide their guests? If the answer to any of these questions is " yes", would love staying at Sarah Gill's "Le Petit Nid". But I must point out, though it is a wonderful "nid" ( nest in French), it is far from "petit" ( small in French). It is a full sized 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, with large kitchen, dining area and salon, and complemented by a covered outside BBQ area , a large extra storage room and ample parking. Its location is superb in the heart of the Maurienne Valley and close to several quaint villages from which all the necessities of life can be obtained. And there is a beautiful swimming lake with clear clean water a heartbeat away. The house is tastefully furnished with comfortable furniture and art. It comes complete with every amenity you could need, and if you should desire anything more, just mention it to Sarah, who lives next door and and she will fulfil your every request. Also, She is en excellent professionally trained chef, so do not miss the opportunity to partake of one of her delicious dinners. Simply stated, this holiday property is a real gem. Do not miss it. You will not be disapointed.
