“Nice location shame about the cleanliness”
My wife and 26 year old son stayed for three nights in the lower unit. The house is in a nice spot, the directions to get there was clear and owner generally helpful when booking. However, on arrival we were disappointed with the service provided and the cleanliness of the apartment. No bedding or towels were provided for my son's stay. We made up the sofa bed using spare blankets etc but they were all dirty as were crockeries, glasses, pots and pans. Tea towels were smelly. The barbecue grill outside was left unwashed from the previous guests. No instructions were left on how to light the fire in the front room. We have no problem that the apartment is basic but providing an unclean place where people sleep and eat does not fall in that category. Given we were there for three nights we decided to put up with it. We note the positive reviews given by other customers and hope that this was an one-off. In any case our advise to owner would be, please check that your place is clean before guests arrive. Despite this, we would recommend the lower unit for its location and providing that clean bedding and utensils are included. And also because we had a memorable time in Yosemite National Park.
Response from the owner We have the complete linen and blanket set up for the bed mentioned in a foot stool right by the couch/bed, obviously it was just overlooked. We have taken steps to mark it better. - Apologies to this guest that missed it. We are quite thorough after each guest to see that utensils, cups, dishes, etc are all cleaned. It may be that a previous guest put dirty dishes or cups back in the cupboard? Whatever the case we immediately, upon receiving this comment, took all dishes, cups, utensils, pans, etc from every cabinet and drawer and washed them all. Apologies again to this guest that had the experience of dirty dishes.
“Good experience, even though we didn't actually stay”
We had to cancel our trip at the last minute due to the Oct 2013 government shutdown and were worried that we would be out the already-paid rental fee. Hans (the owner) was very generous in refunding our entire fee, despite the loss it would be to him. He was very responsive through the entire booking (and cancelling) process and we would love to stay with him sometime in the future.
“Great location- wonderful stay”
My family of four (2 adults/ 2 kids - 10 and 8 years old) stayed here for three nights in august. The place was great and clean. It's not luxurious, but it really is a mountain home. We stayed in the 1st floor where it has a full kitchen and a spacious living room that are connecting to the bedroom through a hallway (see pictures). The bathroom is clean and has plenty of towels. We love the location!!! The house is inside the park. You are at midpoint between Mariposa Grove and Glacier Point. The kitchen is a huge plus for us because I can fix quick breakfast for the kids in the morning, and prepare sandwiches for the entire day out. If you plan to cook, be sure to bring all the ingredients (we brought water (to drink), eggs, bread, cooking oil, etc... things to make quick but hot meals for the kids). Everything else was provided, from pots/ pans to dishes and spoons! We saw a bear on the 1st day there, which totally thrilled the kids (and scared the adults :). Driving to all main attractions is pretty fun and easy, too. Oh, our phones had no signal so if you are not good with direction, please bring a navigator. Our navigator (not from cell phones) saved us a lot of time trying to figure out where we were at and which way we should go. Booking the place is also easy. I emailed/ talked to Hans. He was very nice and made the whole process painless. I messed up on the date and luckily, the place was still available. Hans was totally cool about that and was very accommodating. Thanks Hans!!! I also met the nice homeowner who is living upstairs. If you want a convenient and clean place for your small family, Alpine Hut is an ideal choice as long as you're willing to clean up after yourself during your stay. This is just a great place in Yosemite where you can create memories with your family. Kids are still talking about bear, coyote, deer, wild turkeys, and other animals we saw. Hiking was fun and the views of Yosemite were just impressive!!! You'll love it.
“Clean and convenient”
This place was immaculately clean. It appears to be newly refurbished with new furnishings and a well-stocked kitchen. It is about as close to Yosemite as you can get without staying on the valley floor. Depending on traffic, it takes about 30-40 mins. to drive to the valley. It is a good choice for small families. My husband and I stayed with our toddler son. The bedroom includes a queen and a twin bed,so one child would be able to sleep in the room with parents. Our son is too young to sleep in a regular bed though, and he won't stay asleep if he knows we are in the room. I was worried that there wouldn't be a spot to set up his crib, but it turned out that the connecting hallway between the living space and the bedroom was the perfect spot. The apartment is essentially 2 rooms separated by a long hallway that has doors on either end. Between the two rooms is a garage for the main house. Each room is accessible via a locking sliding glass door. So when our son was sleeping, we could close both doors to the hallway and walk outside to get from the living space to the bedroom. It worked fine for us. The homeowners who live upstairs were very helpful. When we arrived, the electricity for the area was out. It was difficult to get settled in a dark house that we were not familiar with. The owners loaned us a headlamp and lighter for the gas stove. Luckily the power was back by morning. The queen bed has issues. It is a platform-style Ikea bed, which I have owned in the past. This one seems to have been assembled incorrectly or is just designed poorly. We are not large people, and every time one of us rolled over, the slats under the mattress would give out and we would sink. We tried many times to put the slats back in place, but they would always eventually fail. Very frustrating at 3 am! Note that you must enter through the sliding glass doors. The key does not work in what appears to be the front door, but is actually the garage door.
Response from the owner Terribly sorry about the bed. We are getting that fixed ASAP! We'll put a better sign for the front door. Thanks for the review.
