“Modern, Arty & Pure Bliss”
My family and I stayed at Villa Nilaya for 4 nights. We were totally spoilt from the very beginning. The Villa itself is enormous! We just couldn't believe how well presented it was. There are beautiful pieces of art and ornaments in every living area for you to look at. There are seats and day beds in every part of the Villa....yet it is not crowded. The open plan of the Villa allows the beautiful sea breeze to filter through giving a beautiful relaxed feeling. We found the beds very comfortable (loved the turn down service) , they had huge mosquito nets around them at night and fans above the bed if needed. All amenities were provided in the bathrooms. The team at the Villa were fantastic. We were greeted by Wayan the villa manager and his wonderful and cheerful sidekick Kadek. We made use of the two professionally trained beauty therapists Katut & Tini who also look after your meals & cleaning. We actually went on a half day tour to Kadek's village out of town. I would highly recommend this as a way to get out and about and see some sights! The staff are super organised and generally like to know a day in advance what you are up to the following day. This was probably the hardest thing we found....as we generally didn't decide until that day what our plans may be. We were pleasantly surprised by the location. Although Candi Dasa isn't the most happening of places it really didn't matter as we had everything we needed at Villa Nilaya.
“A wonderful retreat”
Villa Nilaya is all about aesthetics. The owner also owns an art gallery an the sense of space and view that went into the design clearly show. Looking out from the house, the beachfront view across the bay to the island of Nusa Penida is featured from almost everywhere. Looking up in the house, the extraordinary expanse of thatched roof that spans the entire house is a pleasure of lines and angles. In every corner, art works from Indonesia and Australia are displayed, some by very well-known artists. This visual experience is matched by the physical comfort of the house. There are many spaces to sit and relax, from the dining table, through a lounge area on the wide porch, to the poolside loungers, and the pavilion on the seafront deck. The beds are comfortable and the sound of the sea lulls you to sleep. The bathrooms are an unusual extravagance: each is large enough to have featured as another bedroom, and adds considerably to the feeling of being pampered all the time. The staff manage skillfully to take care of you without imposing upon you. This is a large house to keep clean, and the daily cleaning was performed thoroughly without us even noticing. Food can be served in the dining area or out on a table by the pool overlooking the ocean. Overall the effect was of great relaxation and renewal. Highly recommended!
Response from the owner "Life as in Art!" Delighted that you appreciated our style...Villa Nilaya has become a centre for art and creativity, not just through my professional life as a gallerist, but also through the retreats we hold here mid-year.
“A wonderful find”
The villa we were staying in up in the North of Bali could only have us for 11 nights so we needed somewhere for another three. This was available and looked better (though more expensive) than the previous (very nice) villa we had stayed in at the other end of Candi Dasa. We were not disappointed . It is gorgeous: tastefully decorated and full of beautiful objects and a wonderful view. It is also huge. In fact, the two of us slightly rattled around in it. We had a car and, I think, given the distance from Candi Dasa that was wise. I am sure though that transport is easily arranged to any restaurant or Spa if you wish. There are a few warungs near by. We ate at one and had fabulous food two nights running. ( I can't recall the name it is just past the Crystal Beach Villas (?) complex (whose cocktails are not to be recommended but do provide a good , if expensive massage- we didn't eat there.) The house and grounds are well kept and not overlooked. We asked for privacy and got it. The staff provided breakfast and very interesting and rather delicious delicacies for tea. And the owner is super-nice and responsive to deal with. All in all a great success and we didn't want to leave.
Response from the owner Glad that you were able to enjoy Bali North and South - I think the warung you found was the Amarta ...but our village of Mendira has a cluster of great eateries within easy walking of Villa Nilaya. Thank you for being our guest!
“The perfect quiet holiday we wanted”
We moved to Villa Nilaya after another villa we'd booked was very noisy and this was recommended to us. Wow, what a special place...a lovely open villa that the sea breeze kept cool. Plenty of areas to read and get away including pool loungers, seaside bale with a double daybed and a huge 2nd floor balcony overlooking the sea (where I'm curently sitting writing this). Some restaurants in walking distance or an inexpensive ride to Candi Dasa if you need more though we were loath to leave the villa. The massages, home made food and of course the lovely staff were all great. This was the perfect tranquility and relaxing we needed, thank you Anna.
Response from the owner Thank you for finding us! We're a little off he beaten track, but that's what keeps our secluded serenity so special...glad it was worth the effort.
“A truly wonderful place.”
We had a most fabulous time at Vila Nilaya. I would highly recommend it to others. Huge and beautiful building, terrific local staff, very nourishing ambience.
Response from the owner Thank you for your nourishing review!
“Beauty and peace in East-Bali”
Our family (parents and daughters, 14 and 12) stayed for 8 nights. For our first visit to Bali we did a lot of research as we wanted to avoid the beach crowds and experience some of the day-to-day life in addition to relaxing near the sea. Villa Nilaya proved to be an excellent base to achieve this. The design and interior of the villa are extraordinarily thought-through and tasteful. You get to stay at such places only if you rent from a private person who has poured their heart into a property. To enjoy such personal touch and beauty, compromises sometimes have to be made. In the case of Villa Nilaya the compromise is with respect to the staff. They are very friendly and extremely willing and also had some training, but you should not expect the service and knowhow you may have experienced at a well-managed hotel. Also, the beach (a bit of sand and black pebbles) disappears at high tide, which happens all along the East coast. But the snorkeling and the corals in front of Villa Nilaya are well worth it, and you have the water essentially to yourself. In summary, Villa Nilaya is a very attractive retreat from where to explore the beautiful scenery and experience today's village life in East-Bali.
Response from the owner Thank you for your thoughtful review. Yes, our lovely staff are drawn from the immediate local villages of Mendira and Tengenan as part of our intention to support our local community. 'Little by little' is our motto, and whilst eager to learn, their best training is by example, so we always appreciate any input from our guests.
“It's such a wonderful place”
My partner and I stayed at Villa Nilaya and at the end of our stay wished we could stay longer. The staff, Wayan, Ketut, Tini and Kadek were delightful. Attentive when required and knew exactly when not to be around so we felt we had the whole villa to ourselves. We went on the white water rafting trip and will do this again when we come back to stay at Villa Nilaya. We will definitely be back to stay at Villa Nilaya !!! Thank you all for making it such a memorable vacation.
Response from the owner We're really glad that you enjoyed our East Balinese hospitality and look forward to welcoming you back to Villa Nilaya Bali Beach.
“Amazing location to leave worries behind !!!”
I had a surprise from my loving husband!! Saturday morning he asked me to pack my suitcase, within five hours we both been driven by taxi to place called CandiDasa in Bali. Next day paradise has welcome us with beautifull sunshine, I could not belive my eyes!! Wonderfull place, modern design villa with all facilitys and four people to look after you!! Wow We enjoyed this magnificent place for a week; breakfast, lunch and dinner specialy prepered for us. I fell in love with sound of the ocean while resting on day bed under gazebo on the front deck, relaxed atmosphere was best attribute. Day before our departure we took part in cooking class. Executive chef- Dewa ardika shared his few secrets of cooking balinese traditional food, experiance recommended to everyone. Till today we miss every day massages and friendly faces. We can't stop raving about Villa Nilaya enough, you have to find out for yourself how magnificent this place is!!! Forever hooked on holidays in CandiDasa ... Eva & Marek Perth- Western australia
Response from the owner What a great way to start a holiday in Bali Eva, with a beautiful surprise package from your husband.. I'm delighted that it was the start of a love affair with wit MY favourite destination in the world . So happy to have shared it with you, Warm regards, Anna
“A lovely villa, but not quite perfect for our family”
Villa Nilaya is beautifully situated on a quiet stretch of rocky beach with an active reef just off shore (some great snorkeling). The staff is amazing: efficient, hard-working and always helpful. The beds are comfortable and the villa is very nicely appointed. The pool is great. The food was tasty, well presented and well priced. It was a restful and enjoyable stay. However, some of the design features created concerns for our family of 5 adults and one toddler. The 10 - 14 inch railing surrounding the deck overlooking the ocean is insufficient, especially for families with children. The current railing is arguably worse than nothing; you could trip over it, but it will not stop you from falling 20-25 feet onto the rocks below. Apparently, this is intentional, so that the view is not interrupted, but what is the point of a foot high rail? Similarly, the second story staircase (pleasing architecturally) is open to the first story right at the top, with no railing to prevent someone falling 15 feet into the main floor - again terrifying for parents of a two year old. Similarly, there is a gap under the railing on the second floor (under a built-in bench) large enough for a toddler to squeeze under, and fall to the patio beneath. We may not have noticed these things if our group had been all adults, but it meant the second story, and the deck, was entirely and always out of bounds for one member of our crew. These things would not dissuade me from booking here again with a different group, but for a family with small children, it was a source of stress. A final note: the billing was unnecessarily awkward. We had to bring cash for the final payment, and pay the deposit with an expensive bank transfer. The payment for food and sundries was billed to our credit card; it would have been much more convenient to have settled the entire bill this way.
Response from the owner Thank you Kathy for your feedback, which is always important to us. Yes, fair comments about safety features where toddlers are concerned ... aesthetics and security - always a bit of a tussle. We'll make sure that we bring those points to the attention of parents of small children considering a stay with us, and meanwhile look forward to your grown-up party next time !
We have just returned from 2 weeks of rest and relaxation and Villa Nilaya and we could not recommend it more. If you are looking for beautiful accommodation, in a really nice village, walking distance to restaurants and snorkeling just on your doorstep you can't go past this villa. We consider ourselves very lucky to have booked this villa. East Bali is well away from the hecticness that often surrounds the towns in the west, it is a great place to see the sights, dive, snorkel and be spoilt. If you are looking for clubs and late nights you are probably going to struggle but this made it perfect for us. We took our 4 year old and the villa was great for her. I would note that I would be a bit more concerned about a child under 3 given no pool/ pond security and the stairs don't have rails etc. We had thought we would self cater a little on holiday but to be honest it was not really worth it, the staff were efficient and the food at the villa was very reasonable and had options of light meals as well as larger Banquets. The team were nothing short of excellent. They made our stay so comfortable and were thoughtful and considerate. In terms of planning if you are new to bali it is worth noting the drive to the villa can be over a couple of hours depending on traffic, not onerous, especially with the pick up and Erwin the manager even stopped at an icecream shop in the way to break the trip! Massages were fantastic and you couldn't beat the setting- massage on the open deck, cooled by the seabreese enjoying the view of the magnificent roof. We will be back
Response from the owner Wow ! Rebecca, thanks for this great feedback - looks like you REALLY had a wonderful time!
