“Excellent accommodation and location”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2017

We stayed in this well-equipped, well-furnished apartment for the month of March. The kitchen has good dishes, utensils, pots and pans, appliances and some staples supplied to make one feel right at home when you arrive. The living area is equipped with sofa, comfortable cushion chair, TV, DVD player with lots of DVDs - movies, and AM-FM radio and great wi-fi. The apartment is on the fourth floor of a secure condominium complex, situated on the Tomebamba River front. While you do not have views of the river from the apartment, you will be looking at the river and historic city of Cuenca as you step out of the building. The apartment is located within easy walking distance to a very good grocery store, shopping mall, bakeries, parks, and most important the historic center of Cuenca with all that it offers such as museums, churches, restaurants, street markets, produce markets, walking tours, language schools, bookstores, entertainment venues and more. Dano, the apartment owner, is a very attentive host, who lives nearby. Dano picked us up at the airport and oriented us to the area and the features of the apartment. He has written a comprehensive user's guide to the apartment features as well as to anything and everything one may wish to do while in Cuenca and region. This guide, also known as "the bible", is contained in a three-ring binder in the apartment and we referred to it quite often during the course of our stay. We felt at home in this apartment and that is a compliment we can all understand and appreciate when travelling in a new land. All in all, we had a most enjoyable experience.

Response from the owner THANK you for your comprehensive, positive review!!! I look forward to seeing you again, down the road!!! Dano

“What a great way to stay!!!”

First I have to say staying in an apartment is the way to go. This experience beats any kind of hotel you might imagine. Finding yourself getting familiar with the path leading in and out and the proximity to all things around you makes you feel much more at home than any hotel might offer. Now you have to understand how this particular apartment shines over the others. I have to say it starts with your host Dan. After 24 hours of travel it was great to have Dan meet me at the airport, help me with my bags, deliver me to the apartment and show me all the features it contains. He took the time to make sure I was comfortable but didn't seem overbearing about it. A true host in the best sense of the word. He was even so thoughtful as to understand I was arriving early in the morning and showed up with bagels and cream cheese and a bag of fresh ground coffee to get me started. What a great host!! The apartment came with Dan's bible, a book he had complied with all kinds of helpful information to get me started on my Cuenca experience. I can't mention how many times I referred back to this book to guide my daily excursions. The apartment itself was very close to what I would expect at home. Extremely well equipped with all the appliances and gadgets you might expect. The bed and furniture were comfortable and well maintained and the entire place was spotless when I arrived. It really made me feel at home. The apartment itself is set back from the street in a relatively quite part of town so noise was minimized by comparison to what you might expect in El Centro. It's also behind a security gate so I felt very safe and comfortable leaving my belongings while out for the day. The proximity to the old city was perfect and made it very easy to hop out the front door and in minutes be in old town exploring the many sites Cuenca has to offer. Got to give this place a two thumbs up! I loved the stay, love the apartment and would definitely stay here again.

“Great Stay”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this apartment. The view is fantastic and there is so much within walking distance! The binder you have available is filled with anything one might need to know. We also appreciated the many English speaking dvd's you had available to us. The apartment itself is quite compact, but better than a bed in a hotel room. Any needs we had you were quick to respond to. We also appreciate your helpful tips.

“Comfort, Convenience, Security and Support in Cuenca”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2013

I thoroughly enjoyed my month-long stay at Dan austin's two-bedroom suite in Cuenca, Ecuador. The location is steps from both historic Cuenca (El Centro) and from the supermarket shopping, parks, river-front walks, transit options, and fine dining that really made my visit. The complex is gated and the majority of residents are permanent tenant/owners. I have stayed in resorts, hotels and short-term rentals elsewhere in North america and Europe but this was by far the best equipped accommodation I've ever found at such an affordable price. Stereo, flat screen TV, DVD library, CDs and Wi-Fi for those times when you just don't feel like setting off on an adventure; en suite washer/dryer/iron to make the chores a snap; and, a fully outfitted kitchen so you can experiment with Ecuadorian meats, fruits and veggies. And then, there is Dan. He meets you on arrival, provides a cell phone to make sure you can stay in touch, and his own 35 page guide to everything from how to get the most out of the apartment to how to find your way to the best of Cuenca. He takes a genuine interest in helping you get off to a good start without the orientation anxiety of finding yourself on your own in an unfamiliar city. This is a really value-added thing - it's like having a personal concierge. I'll be back...

“Home comforts across the street for El Centro.”

Reviewed 20 Oct 2013

Our stay started with Dano picking us up at the airport and delivering us to the apartment. A roomy one bedroom apartment with all the home amenities including a washer and dryer, DVD, microwave, etc were there. Dano even provided the use of a mobile phone during our stay. (We paid the minutes at about $0.20/minute) Dano also a provided a Cuenca "Bible"; a notebook filled with tips about getting around Cuenca which was very helpful. The apartment is across the street from El Centro, the old town, though is an 84 step hike to climb up to El Centro. It is also walking distance to a park, drugstore, grocery and movie theatre. We were very comfortable and happy with the apartment. Our only complaint was with the weather, which rained every day during our stay. At least during the rain we had a collection of Dvds we watched until the storms passed. We would recommend this to anyone visiting Cuenca and we would definitely stay here again.

“Great stay!”

We had a great stay at Dan's place in Cuenca. Dan was very helpful and very well informed about Cuenca and the surrounding area. The rental was spotless and very well equipped for all of our needs. Great location and nice and quiet. Everything was within walking distance. Public Transportation is right in front of the building and great restaurants, shops and markets are all near. Thanks again Dan for your help and hospitality.

“Dano apartment Property Review”

The apartment location was excellent. It afforded easy transportation and walking access to both the Centro and outlying areas of the city. It was also very affordable as well. However, we reserve our most praise worthy comments for our landlord Dano. He provided us with a written guide of "do's and dont's". He also provided us with the use of a cell phone for our personal use. This apartment has breathtaking picture postcard views. In addition we had a fully equipped kitchen and a library of videos and a stero system. A laundry room included a modern washer and dryer. Personally, as future residents of Cuenca we two adults and our ten year old son now have found a new friend in Dano, and through his solititious attentions, other friends as well. Thanks Dano!!!

“Very comfortable apartment - great location”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2013

I spent a month in this apartment, and had a great time. Being on the fourth floor turned out to be a good thing. After arriving from Orlando, FL, the altitude was a bit of a surprise, even though I was totally aware of Cuenca's elevation. Consequently, I liked the excercise. Compared to the 84 steps up to el centro, it was a breeze. But after each week, those steps were becoming easier. There is so much to see, and do in Cuenca, that a month didn't rerally seem like a long time. There are many museums, churches, and sights in el centro that it was impossible to ever get bored. Also, while in Dano's apartment, I was lucky enough to be there for Ec's Independance Day, and Corpus Christie. It was at the first night of Corpus Christie, right after having a great $1.00 dinner from 1 of the food vendors, that a huge thunderstorm came through. I just ducked under a cabana at the flower market, and met a couple from aZ. After talking for about 20 min., we came to find out that we were all staying in the same apartment building. Also, having been there for a month allowed me to take a week, and travel throughout EC. Went up to Quito, and Mitad del Mundo. Then off to Guayaquil, and to Salinas, on the Pacific Coast. I plan on living in EC within the next 6-18 months. Being from Florida, I decided that Salinas is where I'll call home. But will Definately return to Cuenca, and stay in Dano's apartment again. Also, thanks Dan, for everything !!!

“Good Value for apartment close to El Centro”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2013

The apartment is best suited for one person. As a couple it was really difficult getting around to each side of the bed. The kitchen was well equipped but it is tiny, especially the counter space to prepare food on (18")and sink (like an RV sink). Cooking was more difficult. So if you are only one person and you plan to eat out most of the time, this is the place for you

Response from the owner first 4 rating. But, it's not the end of the world. Just want to add a perspective here for people to consider. Yes, it is a small apartment (as stated, 500 sqft in the listing). So, 2 br's, 1 bath, living and kitchen area fitting into that amount of sqft tells you the spaces are going to be small. That, and the fact that it's a 100 yr old building and rooms are commonly small here unless you're in a much more modern building. I am diligent in full disclosure, which is why I also states the size of the bed and provide photos of every room including the kitchen. Depending on your length of stay, the daily cost may fall between $23 - $35 a night. This is the same or less (as in longer stays) then a mid-level hotel where all you have is a bed in a room and a bathroom, and most rooms will be very small. However, for the same price, this apartment provides a laundry porch, an extra bedroom/office, all the functionality of a kitchen (albeit short on counter space), stereo, and a large selection of DVD's. A great value for the $. When researching a property to rent, take a good look at the photos they provide. In this price range, you will commonly see small kitchenettes with small (one bowl) sinks and tiny refrigerators where you practically have to get on your knees to look in (LOL!!). This unit has fridge double the size of what is normally provided. And, the stove is also a common size, smaller than what we're used to 'back home'. But, it does have 4 burners and an oven. If, in your looking, you must have a full-sized kitchen, larger rooms, and more sqft to roam around in then you will need to up the amount of $$ you expect to pay to the $55 - $100 a night range. Come informed and with realistic expectations based on the country/city/culture you are going TO rather then where you're FROM and you won't be disappointed. Thanks Mara for leaving a review and giving me the opportunity to add another perspective. And, thanks so much for your patience during the check-in process due to the late (and messy) check-out of the previous person.
