“Kyoto at its finest!”
Gion House has high tech elements in a tradional house, from the samsung kelyess entry system to the automatic filling soaking tub there are plenty of modern japanese amenities. Conversely the house has a large tatami room with a zen rock garden, brining elements from new and old. The house was in an amazing location that even the tour guide that picked us up was impressed. The neighborhood is classic old capitol Kyoto you feel is perhaps the equivalent of living in colonial Williamsburg.
“The Gion House was an important part of our visit in Kyoto! Wonderful!”
Mr Tanaka san was a splendid host since the first time we contact with him. He gave us all the facilities for our unforgettable stay in Kyoto. House brings all the comforts you need when you travel without losing the delicacy of Japanese buildings. We feel at home from the first moment. The location is perfect. Ideal to rest after long days of visits and enjoy the city. I hope we can repeat the experience.
“Unique and lovely machiya in Gion”
We agree with all the positive reviews. The house is clearly a work of art, lovingly and exquisitely restored with the finest of materials. We did not find it to be too noisy. It was very clean. The location is very central and delightful. Tanaka San was always quickly responsive. The soaking tub was a life-saver. There are minor downsides. We were on guard against damaging something because many aspects of the house required care in use. There is exactly one couch that you can sit in with your legs extended. (the dining table is Japanese style with cushions on the floor). There is no designated space for your belongings (ours stayed in piles on the floor). The ladder to the bedroom is quite steep and a challenge to older people (or perhaps children) who need to traverse to the bathroom at night. Still, it was a traditional alternative to a ryokan with modern conveniences--which is exactly what we were trying to find.
“Un séjour de qualité”
Nous conseillons clairement cette maison pour faire une expérience originale et très agréable de Kyoto. La localisation est parfaite, le confort est au rendez-vous, les matériaux sont de qualité, la baignoire est superbe et très fonctionnelle. Bref vous passerez un merveilleux séjour dans cette location, nous y reviendrons avec plaisir.
“A Step Back in Time”
I had the wonderful experience of staying at Gion House for 5 days in May/June, 2013. The house is located in a perfect spot in the heart of Gion within walking distance or public transportation facilities to literally anywhere in Kyoto (the most beautiful and traditional city in Japan) that the traveler would choose to go. The neighborhood is quaint and close to many historical sights and within walking distance of the most elegant shopping district in Kyoto. The Machiya itself is a wonder! It has been lovingly restored by the owner, Tokuji Tanaka-san using traditional Japanese building materials and methods. It is obvious that no expense has been spared to create a true reproduction of how it may have looked in the 1890's. Tanaka-san is an extremely personable gentleman who will go out of his way to make you comfortable and happy during your stay. He is very knowledgable about Kyoto and has prepared extensive literature to help the traveler navigate around the city. Please check this out before you make any other choice.
“Modern, traditional, comfortable and central.”
Dear Tokuji-san This was our second visit to Japan. We were so astounded by your country that we were determined to have a longer stay when we returned and as we particularly loved Kyoto we decided to spend 10 days in Kyoto to further explore the region. Gion is a beautiful part of Kyoto. Some of the streets have been restored to older times. We saw Geishas wandering from establishment to establishment, ceremonial parades taking place in the street outside our house, children being taken on excursions from the local school and people who live in the area going about their daily lives. Without a doubt the most astonishing painted temple roof is in the temple next door to the Gion House. Catholics have the Sistine Chapel, but the intertwined dragons of the Kennin-ji Temple offer another version of creation that is equally as breathtaking. To the house...It is a 5 minute walk to the shopping street of Kyoto over the river using a choice of bridges and through fascinating streets. A subway line runs along the river which can take you all over the city or if you wish to catch a bus, another five minute walk to cheap, efficient, easy public transport. The house itself is a work of art. Timber floors, ceilings and fixtures hand hewn and put together without nails. I tried to find a nail, but couldn't. Tatami floors upstairs and a comfortable couch which for us was a pleasure after tramping the streets every day. The facilities are modern and easy to use. Bathing is a choice of shower or traditional Japanese bath. As everything is close by we were able to buy food to prepare at the house or buy pre-prepared food at the enormous food malls in the Kyoto Department stores or market. I recommend your Gion House to anybody who wants to live in a community in a vibrant, modern and traditional city. Regards Henry Rusak
“Wonderful Traditional Japanese Experience”
From the moment we opened the front door, Gion house had a warm, friendly and cosy feeling. We spent three weeks in Japan and this was the best accommodation we had. Gion House is a traditional Japanese machiya but with all modern cons; washing machine, microwave/convection oven, stove top, WiFi, air con and very comfortable futon with a warm fluffy down doona. Self check in was easy and Tanaka was only a phone call away if needed. We stayed 5 nights and found it to be a great location, close to Temples, Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace were only a bus ride away.Trains, buses and convenice stores, were within 5 mins walk. Gion House is right in the middle of residential area, we felt like locals. Yes, the house is on the street front but we did not find it noisy. Take the time to walk around the area, we found some great little specality shops and quaint restaurants where the locals eat, the food was excellent and very cheap. On one of our afternoon walks we saw our first Geisha on her way to work. We have some wonderful memories of Kyoto, we highly recommend staying in Gion House.
“Excellent Location and Japanese Style”
The location of the house makes travelling on foot around Kyoto easy. It is about a 5 - 10 minute walk to major shopping streets and about 10 - 15 minutes to the main temple/shrine walks. The street was a bit noisy but it was the new year period - just bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to night time noise. The bath is fantastic - nice and deep. The futons were comfortable and the house was warm in winter.
Our family of 4 stayed at the Gion House for 3 nights from 13 to 16 December 2012 and we had a great experience staying at a machiya. The place is small but very clean and cozy and has everything you would need for your stay. The heated wooden floors in winter are lovely and so is the heating in the bathroom. The bedding is very comfortable and the sheets are lovely. The location of the house is also very good, being walking distance to the main Gion district where we were happy to see several maiko & geisha on the way to their appointments and also to Kiyomizu temple. The neighborhood is pleasant and taxi drivers had no difficulty locating the house. Overall, we had really good time in Kyoto and the Gion House and would highly recommend Gion House!
We spent 4 nights at the Gion house and really loved the property and location. The amenities are modern, clean and luxurious but tasteful. The architecture is of the machiya style so you can experience the traditional home. We felt right at home once stepped inside the door. The house is within walking distance to major shopping areas, historical Gion district where we saw many maiko and geiko, and temples and shrines that made our viewing of the autumn foliage convenient and accessible. The Gion house was a great base for our trip and we couldn't be happier experiencing the local areas in Kyoto. The owner is very responsive and provided detailed instructions on how to operate modern Japanese appliances, which we found extremely useful. The rental process and payment were straight forward and easy, and the fees were reasonable, much less expensive than a luxury hotel, especially during the peak foliage period. We highly recommend the Gion house to our friends and families and hope to be back here in the near future.
