“Great place to stay while visiting Kyoto and beyond”
Gion House was a beautiful and quiet retreat for our stay in Kyoto. We visited many restaurants and shops in lively Gion which were within walking distance; the bus system was easy to navigate from here so we were able to see and experience many sites around Kyoto and beyond. The ambiance of the home was very relaxing, the beds were very comfortable, the hints and information for guests were very thoughtfully done, and Sachi was very friendly and helpful! We would certainly stay here again.
My daughter and I stayed in the beautiful Gion House upper floor for five nights in March. Although the weather was chilly, the heated floors, toilet seat (!), duvet and thermostat kept us very comfortable. The location is wonderfully convenient and the manager was exceedingly helpful in assisting us with dinner reservations, shipping suitcases, and answering our questions . The owner provided many helpful links to activities and restaurants and the guests' binder in the apartment contained pertinent information. In the middle of bustling Kyoto, the house is located on a quiet side street and a rare chance to enjoy an authentic Japanese home. We will return!
“Loved it, loved it, loved it!”
Have just spent 8 nights in the Gion House (Upper Level) with my sister and my niece. This was the fifth time I've visited Kyoto and my first stay in this accommodation. It certainly met all expectations and I'll definitely stay again on any subsequent visits, as would my travelling companions. In addition, I would recommend the Gion House to anyone contemplating a trip to Kyoto. Instructions provided for access to the house were very clear; the self check-in process straightforward. The house itself is spacious (by Japanese standards), very clean and comfortable. It has been beautifully restored and although fitted out with every modern convenience imaginable (the under floor heating is amazing), the essential Japanese elements that set it apart and make it so special, have been maintained. Everything we could possibly have needed for the duration of our stay had been provided. We felt completely at home, to the extent that some days we didn't venture out till after midday. The Gion House is ideally located, close to all of the action of the Gion district, but at the same time is tucked away in a very quiet street, which allows for a good night's sleep. Public transport, in the form of buses and subway, is within easy walking distance. There is a wonderful teppanyaki restaurant around the corner, and in the opposite direction, but very close by, a donut store that specialises in gluten-free donuts - both were great finds for us. It was a real pleasure to meet Curtis (the owner of the property) during our stay. A purely social visit - he just happened to be in the neighbourhood. I should mention that our stay was completely trouble free and at no time did we need to contact the property manager on any matter. Everything worked perfectly ( WiFi was excellent) and every need catered to. All in all, a fantastic place to stay in Kyoto - although situated in the middle of a city of 1.5 million people (and probably half that again in tourists) - once you enter through the door of the Gion House, you really do feel as though you've entered "Another World" ...and it's perfect.
“The perfect place to stay in Kyoto”
I can’t say enough good things about this apartment, and the folks who own and manage it. My husband and I have now stayed there twice, the second time with my parents in tow, and hope to do so every time we visit Kyoto. The location couldn’t be more perfect: tucked away on a quiet side street in the Gion district, within an easy walk of many shops and restaurants in the immediate area, or a (still short) stroll across the river to reach the department stores and Nishiki Market, not to mention just a few steps away from Kenin-ji Temple, one of the most beautiful Zen temples in all of Japan. The apartment itself is a perfect combination of thoughtfully designed, lovely and traditional Japanese elements and modern convenience, such as heated floors in the bathroom and separate climate control for each room. A spacious tatami living room with a large, sliding , stained-glass window and traditional shrine forms the centerpiece, and is plenty large enough for four people to relax or have a meal together at the low table. The bedrooms are a good size for Japan, nicely decorated, and both the futons and the western bed are comfortable. The bathroom has both a western shower and Japanese stool-and-bucket set up, as well as a large and very relaxing tub with a little window beside it. There is plenty of hot water, plenty of towels, and a separate toilet room away from the bathing area equipped with one of the ubiquitous and wonderful Japanese “washlets.” Everything is maintained in excellent condition, and is spotlessly clean when you arrive. But best of all (at least for us) is the well-appointed kitchen, not just an afterthought in this wonderful apartment. Most of the in Japan, the “kitchen” of a rental property is just a small refrigerator and microwave, a rice cooker and a coffee machine; but here you have a reasonably large stove, an oven/microwave, and enough equipment (Calphalon pots & pans/kitchen tools/tableware) to make a real meal. In addition to the ridiculously amazing food shopping at Nishiki and in the department store basements, there are a few small and well-stocked grocery stores within a couple of minutes’ walk of the apartment. As much as we like the apartment itself, the owner and local manager may be the best thing about the property. They have thought of everything to make your stay here easy and enjoyable, including instructions on how to make sure taxis can find the place! The check-in/out process is smooth and efficient, there is a book in the apartment with an extensive list of useful information about the property and the area, and they themselves are accessible and responsive in the event you need any assistance or have questions. My husband and I have rented apartment around the world and I can honestly say that the Gion House is our favorite, and the best overall experience we’ve had. The people couldn’t be nicer or more helpful. On our second stay, an unforeseen circumstance arose that my husband’s basic Japanese was not enough to handle, and both the owner and manager went well above and beyond to assist us. In short, we highly HIGHLY recommend the Gion Apartment to anyone who wishes to spend time in the heart of Old Kyoto. It is a truly unique and special experience.
We had 5 days in Kyoto and our amazing time there was enhanced further by staying in the upper level of this gorgeous house. Excellent location for the old town and walks on the temple trail. House was very clean with everything you could need for a comfortable and relaxing stay (we particularly enjoyed the japanese bathing ritual in the lovely bathroom at the end of a full days walking and exploring). Both the owner and the agent in Japan were professional, helpful and knowledgable and we would definately book here again should we ever get the opportunity to return to Kyoto.
“Fantastic Gion House!”
We had a wonderful stay in the Upper Level of Gion House during December. The house was as described and more than reached our expectations. Our family of four felt very comfortable in the house and enjoyed coming back here each day after many hours of sightseeing and visiting temples. It was very cold during our stay but the house was warm and toasty to the point where we would turn the heating off during the night. We all especially loved the bathroom with the deep bath and amazing shower. It was a hit with everyone. The area was excellent - full of atmosphere and very accessible to many of the vibrant areas of Kyoto. We wandered the area for hours and constantly discovered new and interesting streets. My husband is a coffee and fresh bread lover and both were within an easy walking distance of Gion House. Junko was very helpful and booked a wonderful restaurant for us on Christmas night. I would highly recommend staying in Gion House and would love to be able to stay there at some stage in the future. Thank you Curtis!
“Lovely piece of old Japan”
My family of 5 just had an extremely memorable and comfortable stay at the beautifully conserved Gion House. We took the whole upper level and the 2 rooms, 1 living room, fully equipped kitchen and extremely spacious bathroom was just perfect. I've stayed at quite a few Japanese homes of friends but none with the authenticity and modern comforts of Gion House. The experience of staying at a true blue machiya right smack in Gion is indescribable. The location was unbeatable - round the corner from the house is the famous Gion district of carefully conserved traditonal restaurants and Gion Corner, the cultural theatre. It's a 3 minute walk out to another main road and you're 1 (or was it 2) bus stops away from the famous Kiyomizu temple. It's also walking distance to Kodai-ji, another important temple and the charming cobblestoned streets of Ninnenzaka and Sannenzaka filled with wooden, old-styled Japanese shophouses selling high Japanese crafts, paintings, ceramics, delicious green tea confectionary and soft serve icecream, artisanal rice crackers .. the list is endless. Right at the start of Ninnenzaka is an udon (noodle) restaurant, Omen, that's not to be missed. One always feels some trepidation when booking a homestay off the Internet and I'm happy that my anxiety was proven to be unfounded. The eye to detail and comfort, all the facilities that we take for granted until something goes wrong - a water heater that delivers consistent heat, working airconditioners/heaters, clean tableware - all were in perfect working order. And don't overlook Curtis' small collection of old books on Japan. My eldest boy loved the volume of Stoddard's Lectures on Japan which he finished reading. Junko (from the company another World which manages Gion House and it sister property, Gion apartments) was extremely helpful over the phone even though I had to bother her on a Sunday morning. Thanks to Curtis for being a big part of our wonderful family holiday in Japan!
“Could not have asked for more !!!”
A long awaited experience, staying in Kyoto for 3 weeks at the Gion House!!! It was so very comfortable and in the best of locations. So many excellent treats, historical and tasty within walking distance. at 73 years of age and from the Middle of america, I had long wished to make pottery in Japan and Curtis arranged for us to do it right across the street. What a host. Thank you so very much.
“Great house in a great location”
We (two couples) rented the upper level of this beautifully restored house for 6 nights in March. The house is perfectly located in a quiet lane in the atmospheric Gion district. It is within walking distance to many temples, gardens etc, and for further excursions, we used the bus network, which is easy to negotiate, with destinations and stops spoken and written in English. The bus stops are on a main road an easy 5 minute walk away. The apartment was supplied with everything we needed. Curtis and his representative in Kyoto were very helpful for arrival and settling in questions by both emails and telephone. We usually cook meals while on holidays, but we found many local and well priced restaurants within easy walking distance.I loved strolling down Hanami-koji, so close to us, in the evening. The weather was still cold at night, but the apartment is very comfortable with underfloor heating and airconditioning. For older bones the divan in the lounge room was a plus to sit on after a long day sightseeing.
The location is the best you can imagine for feeling the true old Kyoto. The owner is very helpful and the flat has been perfectly restored.
