“Brigadoon in Umbria!”
My daughter and I decided one year ago to find the "perfect place" for celebrating our "special" birthdays within a month- my 70th and her 35th. Somehow research and blind luck led us from Canada to Panicale in Umbria and the exceptional manager of rentals in that town- Katia Mughetti. Feeling that we might need personal privacy and space, we chose the Il Roseto apartment built into the city wall of this perfect little hill town. With the help of our GPS with European sim card ( ( I recommend that highly) we reached the hilltop town in less than two hours from Rome. The cheerful, generous Katia met us, led us through the apartment, and before our dropped jaws could close, walked us around the corner to Piazza Umberto I, introducing us to all the restaurant owners, the best fruit and vegetable place, the local bar where everyone gathers for café latte in the morning and drinks at night...she had equipped our place with wines and a platter of fresh fruit that became breakfast every morning. Panicale is perfectly situated. It allowed us in less than an hour each day to drive to and from Perugia Assisi, Spello, the wine and oil trails, Deruta with its majolica workshops- and little hilltop ruins that gave us magnificent vistas in complete solitude. The rental could not be better equipped- sharp knives, all varieties of coffee maker, full-sized fridge- and for those who enjoy cooking, could anything surpass an electric convection oven with a gas cooktop above it? The first evening daughter and I joked about when the film crew was going to emerge to dust us for the close-ups. We felt as though we had wandered into a film set for the perfect Italian town. By Friday- her birthday- we were sipping prosecco at Aldo's bar (again, Katia's thoughtful provision) and then strolling across the piazza for dinner at Lillo Tatini. I cannot imagine so unforgettable a week anywhere!
Il Roseto is lovely spacious house with amazing characteristics...gorgeous garden. It has has been a wonderful experience here not only in Il Roseto but also the town of Panicale. We will treasure our 6 months that we have spent here forever.
“The perfect place”
We have spent a glorious month in this lovely village. The house and garden are even better than they look in the photos - huge, well equipped and full of character and history and just round the corner from the main square. Panicale is a good centre for exploring the stunning local countryside round lake Trasimeno (with some wonderful footpaths and views) but also for visiting many Umbrian and Tuscan historic towns and cities within an hour or so driving. The town is well equipped with food shops bars and restaurants. Katia looked after us very well, throughout our stay, with fruit and wine thoughtfully provided on our arrival which was late at night following a long flight delay. The weather in September has been glorious with blue skies and temperature is the upper 20s virtually every day. The only downside has been the Mosquitos so be prepared! In summary, a perfect place!
This apartment, in the lovely hill top village of Panicale, is architecturally stunning. It is quite large and can easily accommodate 4 people. The kitchen is also spacious and well equipped with all the tools needed to take advantage of the local bounty. Unique to this village apartment is the pretty garden which gets great morning sun. We enjoyed many hours there. Katia, who manages the property, is attentive and a great communicator. When we brought to her attention a broken shower hose it was replaced within hours. Katia lives close by and stopped by often to make sure that all our questions were answered and that we were were happy in our space. Panicale is a magical place and a great central location for visiting the sites in both Umbria and Tuscany but without the crowds.
“Perfect garden in Panicale.”
Panicale is a small medieval village in Umbria. The centro is surrounded by ancient stone walls, and Il Roseto is part of these ancient walls.Parking is on the street, right outside the entrance to the garden. Within one minute, one arrives at the main piazza, where there are 2 coffee bars, 3 restaurants, and several small shops. Panicale has everything you need-a bakery, post office, ATM, small grocery, etc. The apartment is a recent renovation of an old cantina. The stone work and arches in the interior are beautiful and the renovation incorporated some interesting original features. The apartment is an interesting blend of ancient and modern. We loved the feel of the place. There is a small kitchen, which has everything you need. The dining room and living room are huge, and there is satellite television and wifi. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. All the rooms(not the bathrooms) have one window facing the garden, except for the master bedroom which has a large door. All the windows are screened. Because the apartment is a ground floor, in the summer it will be quite cool. No need for air conditioning! My husband and I were really happy to have such a large apartment with comfortable beds and sofas. It was great having the washing machine, and we cooked several meals and ate in the garden. The garden is huge! It is really amazing to have such a large beautiful space in Panicale, and we were delighted with it. Katia is the perfect house manager. She will take care of anything you need and can answer any questions you have about the area. She will make you feel at home, and you will become part of her family while you are here. There are so many fabulous places to visit in Umbria and Panicale is the perfect starting point. The train station is close by, and it is easy to park and take the train to Rome or Florence for the day. The two weeks we spent at Il Roseto were so much fun. We would definitely return.
“Great cozy apartment in charming medieval village!”
Stayed at this great cozy apartment for 3 weeks in November. Enjoyed sitting in front of the fire reading on cold wintry days... sitting out on the balcony in the sunshine... cooking meals using meat and produce from the village butcher and grocers... walking around the medieval walls and taking in the spectacular scenery. Each day I'd walk down to the main piazza for morning coffee and pastry, then again in the late afternoon for a glass of local Umbrian wine, and occasionally for scrumptious meals - the restaurants in town are delightful! Nearby towns were fun to visit by car... Castiglione del Lago - 1909 Barbini is a great little restaurant, ceramics by Stefania are beautiful... Macchie for pizza at The Pelican. A bit further away, Deruta has outstanding ceramics, Oriveto's duomo/cathedral is breath-taking, Montefalco and Bevagna are fun too. Drove even further away this trip, to eastern Umbria and the towns of Norcia and Castelluccio - both great to visit and experience. Katia, the property manager, was awesome! Always available if I needed something... and gave me great ideas of things to do and restaurants to try. She even took me to buy firewood for the wonderful fireplace in my apartment! This is my 2nd rental through Katia - highly recommend Katia and her properties for a stress-free holiday!
