“Home Away from Home”

Reviewed 20 Jul 2015

Our family of 4 (two adults and kids 8 and 10) had a lovely long stay at la Casa de Miguel. This open concept home is about midway between Montezuma and Cabuya and about 100 meters from the beach. Because it is set back from the waterfront, there is relatively little traffic and MUCH less road dust than some nearby properties (but you can still hear the ocean at night). The home is in a beautiful garden like setting full of flowers, a large grassy area and many fruit trees (we had mangoes, oranges, limes and water apples during our stay). The children spent many happy hours playing and exploring the area around the house. We saw white face monkeys, howler monkeys, coatis, agoutis, armadillos, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, fireflies, butterflies (including morphos), golden orb spiders, tarantulas, bats, toads, crabs, geckos, iguanas, and numerous birds (hummingbirds, parrots, herons, woodpeckers…) from (and occasionally in) the house. The house has an instant hot water heater so there is hot water throughout (not just “hot showers”) and if you have spent much time in Central America, you know that is remarkable. This home is well stocked and had enough cutlery, glassware, towels, and whatnot to make it possible to really feel at home and prepare meals there (something I have not found in all furnished rentals). It was also fantastic to have a washing machine and plenty of indoor and outdoor clotheslines to facilitate drying no matter the weather. The Wi-Fi worked well enough for my husband and I to work (there was occasional power flickering, but there is a UPS that generally was sufficient to protect the connection). We did have a car (which always makes things easier) but know plenty of folks who used the buseta that travels between Cabuya and Montezuma a few times each day and/or taxis to get around—you can then get a bus from Montezuma to other places you want to go. With a car you can more easily access Delicias and the beaches in Mal Pais and Santa Theresa (road conditions permitting). The Montezuma Super has pretty much everything you may need for cooking/living and there is a farmers market in the town square on Saturday mornings. There are some really wonderful restaurants in Cabuya, Montezuma and up toward Delicias and it is worth the effort to seek them out. We have wonderful memories of the area and the house and would recommend it for 2 couples or a small family. Pura vida.

“Best vacation ever!”

Reviewed 5 Mar 2014

My husband and I spent 8 days in this lovely home and had the best vacation we ever have had. We wanted to spend time in a peaceful setting and we found it at Mike Walter's place. I mean it when I say it was absolutely perfect. We walked down to the beach in 5 minutes, could still hear faint sounds of the ocean waves from the outdoor living area, and the trees were filled with monkeys almost every day. We cooked meals in the kitchen that had everything you would need- pots, pans, dishes, coffee maker and blender for smoothies from all of the amazing Costa Rican fresh fruit. Every night we sat around the kitchen table in the handmade rocking chairs and sipped wine or fresh juice and just listened to the ocean and sounds of animals moving through the trees. During the day we walked to Los Cedros beach that is just at the end of the driveway or walked the 2 miles along the dirt road into Montezuma or further beaches- there is no shortage! On the hottest days when the tide was low, we walked along the rocks and dipped into tide pools when we needed relief from the sun. You can take a bus but we never wanted to coordinate a schedule so walking was just fine. If you are looking for a quiet getaway, truly relaxing, nourishing, and replenishing- this is the spot! Donna, the caretaker, was also incredibly kind and made sure we had what we needed- she even invited us with her on an errand one afternoon, to the other small town nearby. We bought fresh pineapple pastries, groceries, and probably the freshest fish I have ever eaten. We also were able to take an awesome hike in the Cabo Blanco by catching the local bus to the park. That hike and the beach that lies at its end is magical! The bus took us back home as well- easy. Mike Walter's house was beautiful, the area was brilliantly lush and we hope to return after our baby is born- with her in tow!

“...a wonderful vacation in a beautiful country and a delightful”

In the winter of 2012, we spent our vacation in Costa Rica at Casa Miguel, located between Montezuma and Cabuya on the Nicoya Penninsula. We were attracted to Casa Miguel because of it's delightful combination of open spaces for living and dining, and closed areas for sleeping and bathing. We were pleased to find amenities such as WiFi, telephone, and laundry facilities included for our convenience at the house. We appreciated the privacy of Casa Miguel, which is set back from the road and is surrounded by trees and plantings. We were treated to views of the beautifully landscaped grounds from the comfort of rocking chairs on the porch while reading and relaxing with music. We were entertained by agoutis and pezotes and other wildlife on the grounds, and followed the paths of howler monkeys and white faced monkeys as they passed through the trees overhead. We also discovered the bus line only steps away, providing convenient transportation to nearby towns for shopping, dining, and other adventures. Best of all, however, we enjoyed pleasant walks from Casa Miguel to the beach at Playa Los Cedros and for river swims in nearby fresh water pools. Winter, 2012; A wonderful vacation in a beautiful country and a welcoming Casa Miguel in which to enjoy it!

“Beautiful, restful, colorful...nice place to spend some time...”

If Paradise could be described as palm trees along an empty, sandy beach next to a perfect, azure sea -- and I guess it can -- then Mike's place in Moctezuma, Costa Rica, would fit that description. The time we spent beneath his roof sits high and comfortably atop my memories of time well spent. The days were warm and clear and the nights were cool and dark. And quiet. What more could you want? Well, how about a climate mild enough that walls on the house are not necessary. We spent much time just sitting in Mike's kitchen and living area looking out at the magnificent flora, observing iguanas, brilliant birds and even monkeys swinging through overhead. I spent 25 years as a photographer and can tell you that, from a photog's view, this is one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. Add to the mix that the people who live there are about as friendly as you will ever find, this means you will be happy while you are there and be wanting to return as soon as you leave...as we have done...
