“I wanted to see Kentucky, and Hisel Valley Retreat was perfect for experiencing this beautiful State.”

Reviewed 30 May 2015

I take the writing of this review very seriously because vacations are so very important in our lives. Right? Agreed? We spent the first day/night of our 3-day vacation in Lexington, in a hotel. The next day, we hung around in Lexington then headed for Richmond. Emery was expecting us @ 2pm, so we hung round in Richmond for a while, then finally headed to Hisel Valley Retreat. I mention all of this because, though we were in KY for a day before we went to the Retreat, we didn't see the real Kentucky till we headed south of Richmond. Finally! Kentucky at its finest! (In my opinion.) Following Emery's excellent directions, we drove through the glorious KY countryside. I don't think I've ever been anywhere more beautiful. Ah! But it got better: The cottage was perfect in every way. We camped in a state park the last two vacations we took, so the fully-out-fitted kitchen at the retreat was very welcome. I could go on and on, but I'll give just two examples of how wonderful it was to stay at the Retreat: We like to sleep with a fan on at night, and just when I thought, 'Uh, oh! No fan!' I happened to look down and there sat a fan! Then, later, when I was struggling to read a map with small print, our daughter-in-law opened a nearby drawer, and there was a pair of reading glasses! OK, one more example of how perfect the place is; you talked me into it: There are robes in the closets. Oh, and a washer and dryer, too. I must add that the Hisel Valley Retreat is more of a destination than a hub for hurried visits to other places of interest.....because of its remoteness and because once you get there you won't need to go anywhere else. Take leather, high-topped boots if you want to go off the beaten path because there are snakes in the area. I would be remiss if I did not mention the snakes. As my hubby said to me, 'Watch where you're stepping.' Thanks, Emery. We felt like honored guests. I might be back in Ohio, but my heart is in Kentucky! Susan Moore

“Cozy Cottage in the beautiful Kentucky mountains”

Reviewed 23 Oct 2014

My husband and I stayed at Hisel Valley Retreat for a few days to celebrate our 6th anniversary. This is one of the most peaceful cabins we have rented over the years. It is tucked back in the mountains of Kentucky away from any hustle and bustle. The fall colors were great being that it is October. We ventured out for some hiking a couple times and enjoyed a soak in the hot tub after returning. Emery keeps his cabin in great shape, it's very clean and well kept. He also provides anything one might need during their stay other than food. We brought our two dogs with us as well. The large back deck has a railing all around so they can hang out with you without needing to be leashed. Thanks to Emery for a great mini vacation!

“Dream Weekend”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2014

Thank you Mr. Bowen for allowing us to rent your wonderful cottage. You were the best host I have ever had. Thank you for your personal attention and tour. The Lainhart Cottage was more than we could have asked for. The beauty, privacy, all we needed, plus allowed a dream come true for us both!!!! Your cottage truly was a dream come true and I know neither of us will ever forget it. I would love to keep your little hide away a secret so it is available for our next stay but I have told everyone I could about you and your cottages. Thank you again!!!

“Exactly what we needed!”

Reviewed 1 Apr 2014

My son and I spent a long weekend in the Lainhart cottage. Even with a day of rain, it was the perfect place to get away and relax. Exactly as pictured...roomy, clean and comfortable. Dependable internet if you need it, a positive since my son needed to spend some time working on his thesis. Enjoyed the peace and quiet without the stresses of every day life. Thank you to the Bowens for providing such a wonderful mountain retreat!

Response from the owner Hi Gail, I'm glad that you two enjoyed your stay. It was a pleasure meeting you, and sure hope that you can come back. Thank-you so much for staying with us.

“A wonderful getaway!”

Reviewed 23 Mar 2014

The pictures shown really do not do this place justice. The cottage is beautiful and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking. If you want to get away from it all and have peace and serenity, Hisel Valley is the place to go! Emery was extremely nice and very helpful. The cottage was gorgeous, well furnished, and they even provided coffee, soda, water, and hershey minis. The hospitality was mind blowing. The hot tub was wonderful, it was very peaceful to sit in. This was the most relaxing vacation I've ever taken. I can't wait to go back.

Response from the owner Thank-you Ashley and Michell for staying with us. I certainly appreciate you kind words. Your two night stay was way to brief, and I hope that your next visit will be longer and that we have more time to get to know you two better. Thanks again, and your always welcome here.

“The dream spiritual getaway!”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2013

Hi there, my name is Michelle Hiltner and me and my little Yorkshire terrier Precious stayed here at Hisel Valley retreat the weekend of august 10th, 2013. I was looking for a little getaway with a Jacuzzi to help relax me before I started back to graduate school back home. I live in a fairly big city, Toledo, Ohio, once upon a time my hometown was a very proud manufacturing town that believed in hard work and good old fashion values. Since early 2000, I have seen my town become a ghost town, with homeless people and crime every where you turn. I desperately needed a getaway that would bring me closer to mother nature and God. Emery and Ella's retreat was just the place for my lost soul to relax, unwind and rediscover exactly who I am. I spent a lot of time in the awesome Jacuzzi (the best Jacuzzi ever) and the remainder of my time walking in the woods with my little doggie. We made new friends with Emery and Ella's dogs and overall felt at home. I highly recommend this retreat to anyone who needs a get away from the hustle and bustle of life, may you find yourself closer to life, love and the great spirit; like me and precious did. Thank you once again Emery and Ella for everything! I look forward to coming back and visiting again someday soon.

“A Wonderful Return Visit to Hisel Valley Retreat”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2013

We couldn't wait to make a return visit to Hisel Valley Retreat, after staying in the Elwood for two nights in October 2012. Emery and Ella were again the perfect hosts, and we found the house well-equipped and ready for our visit. We again took in two concerts at Renfro Valley during our stay, but planned one extra night to just enjoy the serenity and beauty of the valley. We were honored to be invited to join Emery, Ella and their friends for breakfast at their campground on Saturday morning...an amazing display of delicious food...cooked, served and enjoyed by a wonderful group of people. Our stay couldn't have been better, and we are thankful to have had the opportunity to make a return visit. Our friends and my husband and I hope to return again as soon as we can. Thank you Emery and Ella!

“Creative GGW Ladies' Retreat”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2013

What a find! Our once-a-year all-girl-pottery group enjoyed a fantastic creative 4 days at Hisle Valley last week. At peak attendance, there were 12 of us. We rented both cabins, made use of the "office" sleeping accomodations, and two even chose to tent camp. The fully equipped kitchens made communal meals easy to prepare. The huge deck adjoining Elwood cottage was ideal for relaxing dinners after a long day of working with clay and/or painting at the pottery/painting studio we created in the pavilion at the picnic area. Need I mention what a treat it was to relax and visit in the hot tub before turning in for the night? Owners Emery and Ella have built a mountain paradise; and they welcomed us like we were their personal house guests. Emery helped us unload equipment for pottery, rescued 3 of us with car problems, was available and cheerful about providing anything we asked for. The volume and quality of our pottery and paintings is testimony to the mood and atmosphere of this beautiful mountain retreat.

Response from the owner We enjoyed having these ladies here watching them work with the clay and watching them paint. What a wonderful group of people.

“The right place to unwire, unwind and relax”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2013

My wife and I stayed a couple days for our honeymoon. What a wonderful place! Everything from the home to the hot tub to the property was perfect! The campground was very cool as well as the fish in the pond and all the butterflies around the deck. Pure peacefulness!!! Thank you Emery, it was great meeting you! Patty and I are already making plans to return again soon.

Response from the owner Don and Pattie are nice people and are welcome here anytime.

“The tranquility of nature is at it's best when you are at Hisel”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2013

This is one of the best wooded cottage setting that we have ever been to. The resort has amazing amenities to offer and makes you feel like you are farther from civilization than you really are. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Bowen are remarkable people that are genuine at heart. They have put so much thought and effort into their property to make their guest feel more than home there. If you are looking to take time out of your busy, on-the-go lifestyle that we all live, then we would highly recommend that you treat yourself to one of the most amazing spots in the great state of Kentucky!!
