Description from owner
Hello from Highlands, North Carolina! We would be happy to talk you about accommodations for your visit to the mountains! After more than three decades of operating a B&B in Highlands, we can also help with lots of other information including the best restaurants, hiking trails, travel directions, entertainment options, and many other things. A personal quote is always best, so please tell us about your particular group and length of stay, and we will give you a personal response. Forms such as the one on FlipKey, while quick and convenient, don't always compute an accurate price. Read on to check us out...
Nestled on two beautiful, secluded acres located one-half mile from Main Street next to Colonial Pines Inn Bed and Breakfast at 541 Hickory Street, the Guest House Apartment has a cozy cabin-like feeling and is colorfully furnished with knotty pine, country french fabrics, braided rugs, and folk art.
From convenient off-street parking, walk up the stairs to the deck and enter the upper level of the guest house which has a bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twins, one bath with tub & shower, and efficiency kitchen, making this a perfect hideaway for a small family or a couple wanting more than just a room. In a quiet neighborhood of large old homes, the windows look out in all four directions on lawns, large oaks, maples, and rhododendron which provide a colorful show in all seasons. A small "Great Room" features Cable TV/DVD, a leather love seat, rocking chair, dining table with ladder back chairs, and an efficiency kitchen with a little "retro" oven, a microwave, medium-sized refrigerator, coffee pot and toaster, and everything needed for light cooking.
On the lower level, there is an optional third bedroom with king bed, bath with shower, and Cable TV. This room can be rented as a separate add-on when extra space is needed at a reasonable nightly rate. Please call for a special quote on the two units based on length of stay & number of guests. Neither space includes breakfast at Colonial Pines Inn, but at times breakfast can be purchased separately if the Inn is not at capacity - it doesn't hurt to ask! The lower level room is called (tongue-in-cheek)" The Bargain Basement." It was named after the Atlanta Rich's Department Store's "Bargain Basement" which was actually under the street in downtown Atlanta and was a true jumble sale in the days before everything was always on sale. Anyone remember that?
Up on a quiet, green, magical hillside, you will enjoy hummingbirds, songbirds, pine squirrels, chipmunks and butterflies from the deck -not to mention the occasional bear! Leave your car at the cottage and walk the half mile to Main Street shopping & dining down a quiet sidewalk on 5th Street, walk 1/4 mile to the Nature Center's back entrance by the lake, or walk one block to the beginning of the newly established Kelsey Trail leading up Big Bear Pen Mountain to see the famous view of Whiteside Mountain looking like the head and shoulders of a gorilla!! The Performing Arts Center on Chestnut is located one half block down the hill and features year-round music and theater events. Wild Thyme Gourmet and SweeTreats, two of Highlands' most popular cafes, are only one quarter mile away. The Bascom, a premiere visual arts complex with the second oldest covered bridge in the country, is one mile away. Away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street, but close to everything, there is no better location from which to enjoy all that this little town has to offer!
Maps, directions, hiking guides, restaurant menus, and event calendars are available next door at Colonial Pines Inn where Donna & Chris Alley, innkeeper/owners since 1984, live on the property and are always available to answer questions, provide information, or help plan your special day in Highlands
Please note that this 500 sq ft (plus deck) cottage is best for a maximum of three adults or two adults plus two small children. See the separate listing for Miss Rebecca's Cottage (FlipKey #5750480), a three bedroom/two bath in-town vacation rental near Sunset Rocks, which is suitable for up to six guests all on one level. Check TripAdvisor for excellent reviews posted by guests for Colonial Pines Inn as well as for the two cottages.
Having said all that, pristine mountain air has always been Highlands' most precious commodity. Come take it in as soon as possible! - Your Hosts, Chris & Donna Alley

“Beautiful bed and breakfast, very clean and great inn keepers ma”
The surrounding beauty of the area and cool temps for us Floridians make this a great place to be. Chris and Donna know the area and willingly share their knowledge. There is plenty to do in the way of walks, hiking, drives or just sitting on the porch enjoying the view (and some of Donna's treats). Not a place for children, but then most bed and breakfasts aren't. The little apartment is well equipped and nice for those who want to be on their own but still enjoy the amenities of the inn. Breakfasts are delicious! We have no bests because everything was a "best". There are no least likes!
“The Perfect Mountain Escape!”
I always enjoy going to Highlands and staying at Colonial Pines Guesthouse! The Old Highlands Charm is everywhere, inside and out on this property..It is spacious, quaint, wonderful breakfasts, decorated perfectly, very comfy beds, private, quiet and serene.I always love being there and upon leaving am anxious to plan my next trip back! The Innkeepers do a wonderful job keeping everything inviting and relaxing and the wonderful mtn. air does the rest!!
“Perfect for family with kids!”
The Guest House at Colonial Pines Inn was just what we were looking for! We have a 5 year old and a 10 month old and prefer to stay in apartments/suites when we travel. We found the Inn Keepers very welcoming and inviting. Donna took plenty of time with me on the phone to discuss the lodging offered at the Inn. The guest house has a small kitchen (microwave, oven, coffee pot, refrigerator, etc), 1 bathroom, a small sitting area and 2 bedrooms (1 Queen bed and 2 twins in the other room). We found the Guest House very clean and well appointed! The decor was nicely done and suited to the area. The beds were very comfortable and we had much more room to spread out than we would have had in a hotel. Breakfast is not included, but this can be arranged for a fee. I have since had the opportunity to stay for a quick couple of nights traveling alone and I must say the breakfast was superb! She offers a great variety and plenty of food. You should make a point to sit down at their table for breakfast! The Inn is located about 5 blocks from downtown Highlands, a nice walk for adults or older kids, might be too much for younger ones...there is a steep hill to climb to arrive at the Inn. They have a beautiful property with a great porch to sit and relax or bird watch. Plenty of yard for a picnic or for the kids to run and play. The Inn Keepers are very nice and knowledgable about the area. They are happy to provide restaurant recommendations, etc. I was there on business, so no time to take in all that the NC mountains have to offer. They are a great resource though if you are there for vacation. They even have a larger 3 bedroom cottage if you need a little more space. All in all, perfect choice for the B&B; feel but family friendly!
“Peaceful, relaxing, clean room, and delicious food!”
Our guest house was kept immaculate with all the fine details to make our stay special. Our hosts were friendly and accommodating to our needs, and the food was delicious. Had a really nice time and would go back.
“Neatest spot you could ever find!!!”
Clean as a Whistle.Located perfectly.Everything you need to be very comfortable.A real bargin.Donna,s breakfasts are to die for!!!One warning don't Challenge Chris to a game of chess unless your ready!!!
I was in Highlands for a Destination Wedding and stayed at the Colonial Pines Inn two nights. Donna was the perfect hostess and treated us each morning to a fantastic breakfast as well as very helpful information on the surrounding area and interesting places like the Bascom to visit. She also provided me with good directions home which was the perfect route to sightsee without all the curves I had experienced coming up. The room was perfect and the bed could have not been more comfortable. I recommend Colonial Pines Inn with no exception!
“Deserves 10 stars!”
Our yearly trek to Highlands, NC has always been a treat -- no matter the time of year we choose. N-e-v-e-r have we stayed at a B&B; in our lives anywhere, but this time we decided to give it a try. We like our privacy and found a tantalizing prospective place at Colonial Pines Inn B&B.; Right away we liked the property setting amongst the huge rhododendrons (not yet in bloom though). We had chosen the 4 room unit separate from the main house. And approaching the front door steps we knew we had made no mistake. Walking up the stairs we were already taken by the large deck joining the front door -- perfect for morning coffee or lunch or reading. The two bedrooms and combo kitchen/dining/living room were perfect in its decor and style. Spotlessly clean and highly quaint and cozy, it was all entirely more than satisfying. The rooms in the main building are superior in decor, and there is plenty of coffee, teas, and munchy sweet treats into the evening. If you like watching pine squirrels, grey squirrels, orioles, jays, chipmunks and other wildlife, you'll find all these on the grounds of Colonial Pines Inn. Oh -- and once you show up for breakfast and partake of the special recipes on your morning plate, you'll find yourself considering how you might stay just one more night to see what the fare will be the next morning. Chris and Donna, the owners, know how to set the hook and reel you in. We'll be back -- for sure.
