“Everything we were looking for in curaçao and more”

Reviewed 21 Apr 2015

"Did you see it?" My wife had a big grin on her face. "See what?" "The manta ray!" Apparently I snorkeled right past it on my last swim of our stay at Cas Abou. Totally missed him. But that was alright because we had seen and experienced so many other amazing things on this adventure. At the center of this experience was this lovely cottage that has just what you need to truly detach from the rest of the world. Rather than checking email (which you can still do if you want to) we found ourselves checking to see what birds were visiting us on the deck that morning. Commuting to work became swerving around hermit crabs on the path to the private cove by the cottage. Watching mindless sitcoms dissolved into seeing how each night's sunset would unfold across the broad panorama of sky, sea, and coastline that is the view from the deck. Beyond the setting of this ideal vacation spot, the house itself feels like home. From the cottage's crafty local art and decor to the well appointed cooking and entertaining areas to the welcome air conditioner, the cottage immediately felt familiar and welcoming while at the same time transportive. By all means add an evening with chef Lisa to your stay--she will prepare amazing cuisine in the comfort of the cottage while you relax, have an engaging conversation with her, or just melt into the sunset view with a rum curaçao. In addition to the comforts of this property, the owner Don provides you with a terrific packet of info for planning your trip to curaçao. The island is small and with the available car everything is easy to get to. Highlights of our trip were: beach hopping from totally secluded spots to fully serviced beaches with gorgeous white sands and blue water, bush walking to see the multiple Eco systems the island is home to and tons of wildlife from lizards to turtles to birds, hanging in Willemstad for a more urban experience, and exploring the reefs with the provided snorkel gear. (If you scuba dive there are many world class diving options on curaçao). Another part of our adventure worth a hearty recommendation is the catamaran trip to Klein curaçao. Even with rough seas during our way out, the experience of this beautiful stretch of beach and the excellent hospitality of the outfitters more than made up for it. So, you may not see that manta ray (don't worry, Don has a video he can send you), but everything else about this Cas Abou cottage will ease you into a trip that you will want to repeat. That's why it is number 1 on tripadvisor.

Response from the owner Oh, man, that manta...he's been in front of the cottage for about a month now, a beautiful month. So glad you and the family had a chance to get away from it all and enjoy being on the seaside and exploring Banda Abou! Real nice you got to meet Carl and Caroline, they are Banda Abou treasures. Also, very glad you had a great meal with our chef, Lisa. Along with our massage master, they are the number 1 and 2 service requests for adding to the pleasure of being on the seaside! Looking very forward to welcoming everybody back! Don

“total relaxation”

Reviewed 3 Apr 2014

I rented Don's cottage for the month of March for a much needed rejuvenation. The stay surpassed my expectations. The location is so serene and unlike any other Caribbean rental I have had. It is truly casual, relaxed, outdoor living. I would not trade the experience I had for anything. Don and Brigitte would do just about anything to accommodate me and make me feel welcomed and safe. My husband visited for 2 weeks and loved it. I met many people on the island I now consider my friends. But if it is seclusion you want, that can be had also for the asking. I rarely go to any island twice, because I want to experience different places, but I am seriously considering doing Curacao again next year. Highly recommend the experience Don's cottages can offer.

Response from the owner Hi Terri and Fran! I hope you are all out of the cold and into a solid spring now! Great to enjoy 2 Carnaval parades with you, some local snacks, memorable happy hours at Daniel's AND a great dinner prepared by you and Fran. You get all the scout badges for your explorations especially for trying out both of our chefs! That's getting more and more popular now! Even though you get full marks for Best Explorer there's more to see so we are looking forward to introducing you to some new sights, sounds and tastes that Banda Abou offers. C'mon down! And, yes, Fran can bring his playlist again....Don

“incredible holiday stay”

Reviewed 25 Mar 2014

We were the whole month of february in Don's cottage! it was incredible! what a location - just perfect we may observe from the terrace turtles, schools of fish, dolphin swarms, yes and last but not least, a whale! it was fantastic - the photos are cool the pictures could show only a part of reality - it is more beautiful than in the photos, believe me! We arrived as guests and customers, we leave as friends! Thank you Don! Thanks also to Brigitte for your work in the background we love you anton & birgit

Response from the owner Hi Anton and Birgit! What a nice time having you both on the island! Knowing that you have both traveled extensively for your winter breaks and that you enjoyed the cottage so much means a lot to me. I really appreciated your patience with the upgrades going on while you were here, thanks so much for that! That picture of the whale was fantastic! You were the first guests to stay for a month and that's was really exciting for me. You had some great ideas to make the place even better and I'm already working on them...I'll send you some pics as things change. Until then I'm looking forward to seeing you both in Austria and enjoying some mountain views! Have a great spring! Don

“Private, confortable, and beautiful getaway.”

Reviewed 6 Feb 2014

My husband and I stayed for a week at this little gem. Beautiful setting, close to many fantastic restaurants, and and easy drive to Willamsted. Snorkelling is very good right in front of the cottage. Don is a great host and has created a lovely spot a far cry from the cookie cutter resort scene. Our favorite restaurant nearby was Landhuis Daniel (in a restored plantation house). Favorite beach was Porto Marie although we loved swimming below the cottage (but bring your beach shoes). Favorite moments were late afternoon cocktails under the trees near the cottage and, of course, the fabulous sunsest and night skies from our deck. This is a very special place created and run by very special people. Thanks Don, Bridget, and Lisa.

Response from the owner Hi Val and Bill! We are glad you both had a nice time on Curacao and in our seaside cottage. We are always trying to stay ahead of the curve with comfort and amenities so we appreciated your patience as we were trying to get some new things in place. The new mosquito net is up and running and the water heater is giving folks a nice warm way to start the day! Cocktails under the trees is also a nice way to continue the day and we're happy you enjoyed that, too! Have a speedy end to winter and we hope to welcome you back soon! Don, Brigitte and Lisa.

“Absolutely Perfect. Just book your trip now!”

Reviewed 21 Jan 2014

My sister and I enjoyed a week stay in Curacao. The view is incredible and the cottage quickly begins to feel like home. We enjoyed every minute of it. Don and Brigitte are so welcoming and accommodating. They provided us with great information before our trip and during our stay which made exploring the island even easier. Although the cottage location isn't really close to many main attractions, everything is within driving distance. The cottage offers a perfect place to relax and unwind, but also get out and explore. We plan to return soon.

Response from the owner Hi Hillary and Tori! Great to meet you both and enjoy some adventures together. Very happy you enjoyed some of the more nature-centric hidden gems on our island, it was a pleasure to explore them with you both. We're also glad you had time for the city and to enjoy some night life. We like to think our location is perfect for that...20/25 minutes to the end of the island and 20/25 minutes to the city, centrally located in beautiful Banda Abou! It would be great to see you again for some champagne in the pool! Don

“Beautiful, peaceful & relaxing”

Reviewed 30 Dec 2013

Been back for just over a week but the memories of this wonderful cottage & view will always remain and keep me going through a long cold winter! Firstly, the cottage was so easy book as Don replies to your e-mails very quickly and informatively. When you arrive at the cottage I defy anyone who doesn't say wow to that first look at the view. Don was there to greet us and show us all the things the cottage has to offer like the outside shower (take a careful look at the wall when using it, it will bring a smile to your face!) and the hammock area, which I loved. The inside of the cottage has everything you need, the most comfortable king size bed where at night you can lie in and see the moonlight reflecting on the water, how romantic is that! Mostly it's outside living, with a covered patio leading onto the deck over the water, little touches like the heavy net curtain shades you from the searing sunshine in the afternoons before drawing it back for the sunsets. I cannot comment on eating out as mostly we just lazed around never tiring of the watching the clear turquoise waters and the wild life. Beautiful birds, the antics of Slinky the resident gecko and of course, Iggy the iguana who loved his watermelon everyday. Don is the perfect host, very respectful of your privacy but always on hand if you need him. We shared several bottles of wine with him, great fun and an incredibly interesting man, could have listened to his stories for hours. Yes, you need a car but the roads are very good and the island people very friendly. The 2 weeks were great just what we needed to recharge the old batteries, thanks Don.

Response from the owner Hi Jane and Nigel! You got a shot of Rainbow Season, great! I really have the best job... I get to meet real nice folks and show them some spectacular views and hear some stories about their discoveries on Curacao and their lives back home. It's really fun for me and the wine brings an excellent lubrication to the conversation...It was very nice chatting with you both and I'm really glad you enjoyed your two weeks! Hope to see you again in 6 months for the visa run! Enjoy a terrific New Years! Don

“Beautiful cottage with spectacular view along the aquamarine wat”

Reviewed 20 Dec 2013

Don is a wonderful host. All our inquiries were replied to immediately, from home and onsite! Infos excellent; where to eat out, directions from the airport (very easy to follow). Don makes you feel very welcome and at home! The cottage has the most spectaculer view along the aquamarine blue coast and, a magnificent sunset straight ahead. The cottage's interior is small but absolutely adequate, a very comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen. The whole front opens fully onto the deck, and wow, we never got enough of this scenery and that feeling, that we were perched right over the water, which you literally are. This house has been built with its large deck area for the purpose of spending most time outside on the deck. And it is really worth it! Watch the birds arriving for breakfast, the two little friends who share the breakfast table (two small lizards) and the iguanas who stop by, not forgetting the marine life too! The deck can get very hot late afternoon, but an outside fan helps and a special sun curtain can be closed across the first part of the deck to protect from the heat. There are many things to find in and around the cottage, as Don has given very special thought and care to creating relaxation within the natural surroundings. Two loungers and very comfy chairs and a hammock are hidden between the trees right over the cliff, providing serenity and that feeling of being hidden (although there is nothing to hide from). The outdoor shower is another little jewel, created by Don, I won't say anymore, find it for yourselves! Don provided an excellent service and part of this was a linen change twice a week and quick clean and a greatly appreciated bottle of bubbly on our arrival. As already mentioned, any questions or needs on site are dealt with immediately and Don endeavors to makes all his gueasts feel very much at home. We would like to thank you especially Don, for making our stay that bit more special. Look forward to seeing you in June 2014!

Response from the owner Hi Gina and Toni! You guys really dd the island right! Staying for 2 weeks is sooooo much better than the shorter holidays. And I'm really glad you enjoyed Ba-ooo! No better spot for dolphin watching.,.. think you saw the osprey, too?! You both set the record for a return booking. Your next 2 weeks in June are booked and you will see some nice new touches when you get here. Enjoy a great holiday and I'll be sure there are a few Brights in the fridge! Merry Christmas! Don

“Amazing Honeymoon at Don's Cottage!”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2013

What can we say that other reviewers have not already said? We absolutely loved staying at this cottage-everything was spectacular from the view to the location, etc. As other reviewers have mentioned, Don was extremely easy to work with and so helpful. We stayed here for ten days and truly felt at home. One of the reasons we loved the cottage was it gave us a much more authentic view of the island than we would have gotten in a resort. We were so happy with our choice to experience Banda abou (the less developed part of the island). Everyone we met was very helpful and friendly. The cottage is close to a couple of great local restaurants. Our favorites were Trio Penotti and E Lanternau. Another great perk was free access to Cas abou beach, which we visited several times. A Few Recommendations: 1. Rent a car! This location requires lots of driving-but everything is relatively close. 2. Book Evelien for a dinner on the patio, Ilsa for an in-house massage, and see andhielda with Gobi Divers for an out-of-this-world diving experience. 3. By far our favorite meal was at Kome in Willemstad. Make a reservation, and don't miss this place!! Thanks again Don! -Collin & Elsa Washington State

Response from the owner Hi Elsa and Collin! And it was great having you here! I sure enjoyed meeting you both, the swim with Collin and our nice evening together over some wine, fun stuff! You did your holiday right-proper and I really appreciate you mentioning some of our service partners, they are exceptional local friends who put out the best product because they all love what they do! Congrats on your discover dive! I hope to welcome you back soon...you need to get in the salt water pool next time! Don

“Paradise inside the paradise of Curaçao”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2013

This was our honeymoon... instead of getting a big resort we wated some intimate and local experience, so we found Don's House. We saw the many excellent reviews and booked it. We had great expectations and they were all overachieved. Don's is a great host, and helped us getting an excellent cook, Evelien, and a great massage therapist, both coming at this house to serve us. In the mornings we woke up with several different kinds of birds that came to wake us up, or even better, ask for some bread!!! And Jack, the beautiful Iguana with a shorter tail, always came later to get some fruit and bread too. Don's house location is more to the countryside, next to the gorgeous beach of Cas abou, therefore, you are 5 minutes "tops" from a excellent beach with a great service of drinks, snacks, bathroom and showering facilities, massage and spa. All of this in a white sand beach with great snorkeling. Don's house was so cozy we didn't want to leave the house. Don became a good friend, as became Evelien. We loved it all.

Response from the owner HI Lino and Chris! It was really nice to spend some time with you during your honeymoon! You guys really knocked the ball out of the park and did your holiday in style! The massages and dinners at the cottage are the way to go! I had a blast enjoying some explorations and conversations with you and looking forward to welcoming you back soon! All the best, Don

“Fantastic Week in Curacao”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2013

Our expectations for our stay were high based on the reviews we had read about the cottage and we were not disappointed! To start Don was extremely helpful in getting us connected with a car rental company (Just Drive Curacao worked out great) and dive operation (ditto for Go West Diving) as well as addressing all the questions we had in advance of our arrival. From the moment we arrived the great service continued with a thorough tour of the cottage grounds (water entry points including trail to the private beach, outdoor shower, etc.) and recommendations for dining and activities to enjoy during our stay (all of which were great). As for the cottage, the pictures don't do the view justice. You can feel the stress melt away while you enjoy a cold drink on the deck. The unit uses the space extremely well and is great for a romantic get away. The location of the villa is also great. We could easily drive to activities on the west end of the island (Go West Diving, hiking Mt Christoffel, etc.) or into Willemstad on the east end (Rock Beach is a cool beach bar, thanks again for the recommendation) in about 25 minutes. Best of luck with the remaining construction on the second cottage. We are already working on getting some family members on board to rent out both units in the future :) and thanks again Don for helping make our week in Curacao great!

Response from the owner Hi Ian and Caitlyn! Thanks for taking the time to write a review of our island, the cottage and our efforts at making your holiday special. We really enjoy our work and look forward to taking care of our guests from the first email contact, to arrival and while exploring the island. So many fun things to see! You both did a great job discovering and we hope to welcome you back soon with more of your family! Enjoy a nice fall and winter! Don
