“A Tuscan country-side Retreat Family Vacation.”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2016

Family vacation /retreat do not seem to be related, but at Il Rifugio, the two terms go together and add serenity. This rustic, charming country farm house was a home base for us while we explored the Tuscan hill towns. The six of us, including an 8 and 11 year old fit comfortably. There are so many spaces and nooks in the house where you can read, relax, or escape that you can try one each day. The kitchen is fabulously well stocked, and the professional quality stove was put use daily as we cooked in each night. The breakfast and main dining areas were perfect for big family dinners. The grounds are beautiful. Each terrace offers a new flora experience, and the kitchen herb garden was fun and handy. It was cool when we stayed, so we didn't swim, but sitting on the pool terrace offers an even more beautiful view of the countryside. The bocci ball court was fun for the kids and adults each evening. We were treated to a Tuscan farm lunch cooked on the outdoor wood grill and served on the upper patio - one of our favorite highlights. It is a very quick trip into Cortona for gelato or to the well stocked grocery near by. I could go on and on, but this is a most amazing property. Many cherished memories were made at Il Rifugio.

Response from the owner Thank you so much for your kind words. It really is appreciated and important to us knowing that our efforts to please our guests were well received. We continuously try to make improvements at Il Rifugio and getting it right encourages us to keep trying. Please come back! It would be a pleasure to see you again.

“Tuscany Amazing . . . Il Rifugio a Beautiful Sanctuary”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2015

I finally made it to Tuscany! I have been wanting this trip for over 5 years. A villa in Tuscany with friends. Il Rifugio could not have been any more perfect of a setting, an experience or an adventure. The villa is beautifully appointed and will not disappoint. Every last detail has been thought out and provided. The kitchen had everything (and more!) than we needed. And we cooked and prepared food for 10. The living areas were graced with spectacular views out of every window. The pool was so refreshing to cool down the summer days. The terrace was perfect for our evening meals and long chats over wine. I wanted an amazing Tuscan experience, and i got one. Thank you Chuck and Shirley for the food, the cooking class and for being most gracious hosts.

“High Expectations will be surpassed!”

There were 10 people in our group. Il Rufugio has beautiful grounds including olive trees and vineyard. The owner has someone to oversee if you need anything. He set up a private wine tasting and jewelry making tour where he works. The outside has many areas to relax and watch sunsets .Each room was decorated with impeccable taste and met every need you could imagine. It felt like you were transported to a home on the Rich and Famous with Tuscany charm. It is not only going to be the best place you can stay but also the best experience.

“December in Rural Italy”

Reviewed 26 Jan 2014

Our family spent over a week at Il Rifugio in December! It was a wonderful way to spend time with family, enjoy some sightseeing, wine and rural Italy. The house was unbelievably comfortable for the 7 of us, nooks and crannies and great rooms to spread out in, fireplaces to read in front of and a wonderful kitchen to cook meals in. Highly recommend checking this out. Best for groups of at least 8. Also options for cooking classes! Weather was mild and allowed for lots of walks and evening drinks outside (with sweaters, but still!). A lovely way to relax in rural Italy.

“Perfect Tuscan Experience”

Reviewed 28 Sep 2013

We were a group of ten looking for a villa from which to explore the hilltowns of Tusany and Umbria. Starting our research we looked at quite a few that would work for us but Il Rifugio seemed to be the right fit. Although one never is certain until the arrival, we found the villa created by Chuck Ofria to be perfect for us. Approximatedly 6 kilometers from Cortona the villa sits on a hillside facing west affording magnificent sunsets. We spent almost every evening outside at one of many exterior tables drinking the best wine we ever tasted watching nature close another day. The interior provides a niche for everyone to find a good place to read, nap or find solitude if needed, while common areas provided opportunites to gather and reflect on the day or plan the next. Each bedroom has a bath providing privacy and convenience. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessary tools to put together a meal. Chuck is great to work with, providing suggestions for your stay including side trips, wine and olive oil tastings, meals at Cortona restaurants, and the best meal catered at the villa. If you are an occasional wine drinkers, Chuck will arrange a tasting in Cortona with Marco who will enlighten the most unsophisticated palate. Be sure to book a walking tour of Cortona early in your stay with Giovanni adreani. He will educate and entertain about history and life in Cortona. If you are looking for a quiet retreat with all of the comforts of home but an opportunity to experience Tuscany this is the place. We returned home with a greater appreciation of the richness that is Tuscany. But do not come expecting the familiar. Open yourself to the welcoming arms of Tuscany. The people you meet will enrich your lives and leave you better world citizens.

“Il Rifugio provided us the perfect spot for a relaxing time with”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2013

When we arrived we were greeted with an explanation of the house and location. They provided enough information for us to feel comfortable in the home. They gave us a detailed book with instructions on various workings of the house and adequate directions to supermarkets, restaurants, and other activities. We were also assisted in making reservations for events and dinners in town. The house is magnificent. It allowed us special places to spend time with family (great dining room and several tables outside with spectacular views) but it also allowed us quiet time since there are so many special and peaceful areas throughout the house and the grounds to provide us solitude. We were a family of 10 on that trip and there was plenty of room for all to enjoy. We spent many nights cooking dinners, preferring to enjoy the house and location rather than eating in town. The large kitchen allowed many cooks in the kitchen. There were plenty of showers for all guests. There was one per room and they were spacious which you don't always find staying at hotels in Italy. The pool sets up away from the house a bit which I found to be a perfect spot. It gave us a beautiful view of the surroundings and of the house. The house was just a short drive from the town Cortona but you wouldn't know it as it felt very secluded. When we had concerns of any kind, the owner was easy to reach by phone and arrived in a timely manner to assist us. If given the opportunity, I would love to stay here again.

“Wonderful week in the Tuscan Hills”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2013

Six of us (three couples) stayed for a week at Il Rifugio. June 1 through June 8. The house is over 300 years old, modernized throughout and not lacking any immenities with plenty of room for twice the number of adults. Room to roam internally and outside in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. An active olive grove and vineyard are just two highlights but also the beautiful pool. The group simply fell into a very relaxed, vacation state of mind. We made multiple side trips to cities in the region but made Il Rifugio our home base. It is located about 8 miles froSm Cortona, a lovely city that has everything we wanted or needed - great food, entertainment, culture, history and friendly people. The highlight of the trip for me and what made it most easy to plan and experience was the service by our hosts Chuck and Shirly Ofria. Chuck worked with me to plan our week and arrange for drivers and tours. He was great! His property manager Lucio was also terrific in checking us in and helping us get settled during the week. Great people, great house and in summary a great week. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Next time I would drive locally.

“Perfect Tuscany Vacation”

Reviewed 11 May 2013

Il Rifugio was the perfect place for our family Tuscan vacation. The home is beautiful beyond words and has all the amenities of the best hotels. We enjoyed taking day trips to Cortona, Sienna, Assisi, and Deruta; but had our most fun having dinner together at home. We loved the night we made fresh pizza in the brick, wood burning, pizza oven topped with fresh herbs growing in the garden. Our hike each day up to the lake in Umbria was both beautiful and the perfect monrning workout. Thank you Chuck for being such a great host, and to your wife for the great dinner she prepared for us one evening!

“Our family vacation”

Reviewed 3 Apr 2013

The Villa was wonderful! Had a lot to offer. Pool wasn't open, to cold, but in all our stay was very very relaxing. We went as a family! We were met by Chuck and Shirley (the Inn keepers) They were wonderful. We had day trips planned most days. Going back I would just spend time at the Villa!! The view is unbelieveable!! There are plenty of sitting ares just to take it all in. The home is laid out so all have their privacy. The drive up to the villa was challenging; but we were in a 10 person van. I would recommend a smaller car. The curves can be tricky. The road is unfinished in most parts.
