“Heaven on Earth!!”
We only came home because we had to! If we could have stayed, we would still be there! Everything about this seaside farmhouse was wonderful. The house itself is perfect, the property was beautiful, the beach was amazing and just down the hill, the proximity to downtown Cancale was ideal...about a 5 minute drive. We and our 3 kids loved our time here (my wife cried as we drove out of the driveway), and we can't wait to return.
Response from the owner Thank you Russ for the lovely review! We hope to see you again soon. All the best, Valerie
“The perfect vacation spot”
Valerie's lovely home is the perfect place for a visit to Brittany. We were 3 couples from the us who were very comfortable there and thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay. The house is beautifully restored and very well equipped. Communicating with Valerie was like "talking with a good friend". Her directions and instructions about the house were complete and helpful. The house sits in a beautiful garden with a view of the sea in the distance. On the warmest day, we had lunch at the outside table and sat for a bit on the lawn. We made the walk to the beach several times and walked a bit further to Pointe Grande for lunch at the brasserie. The port in Cancale is lined with restuarants and we ate wonderful seafood in three of them. For oyster lovers, they cannot be beat. One day we bought shrimp at the market at the end of the port and cooked them ourselves. The Sunday market on the street behind the church was fabulous, with the most wonderful looking produce and prepared foods. We love to visit European markets where ever we are and this was one of the best. Our regret was that we were leaving the next morning and did not have time to enjoy the offerings. We went to Mont St. Michele on the way from Normandy and while in Cancale went to St. Malo, Dinan and Dinard, which was my favorite. We had never been to Brittany and did not know much about it, but it is so beautiful and was the perfect ending to a three week trip to France. We want to come back to Valerie's house for a longer period of time. We felt so fortunate to find it and thank you, Valerie, for sharing it with us.
“a very sweet farmhouse with the most lovely beach a stonethrow a”
I would have added another 1/2 star if the review would've allowed me. Nice and clean accommodation in newly renovated farmhouse. The main plus things were: 1 private garden, 2 no crossing roads going to beach which wasn't busy at all, 3 access to good bikes, 4 easy and safe to cycle in to Cancale (kids loved buying bread in the morning). And perhaps most importantly, 5 the owners are very friendly and helpful. The only slight negative i can think of is the layout of the house especially if you're 7-8 people - one room is not integrated to the house and another room is also slightly disconnected from the rest of the house (only an issue if you have lots of young children but perhaps a good thing if you have older ones). warmly recommended.
“Perfect Family Vacation House”
My wife and I stayed for six days in this house with a 10-month-old and had an ideal vacation. Cancale is a lovely town with fantastic bakeries, restaurants, and markets, but this house is far enough outside the village (1.5km) to feel secluded and to enjoy the quietude of the sea. The beach is a short (5 min) walk through the farm, on a trail that connects to the seaside trail and its cliffsides and several other glorious beaches. The house itself is immaculate and spacious. The kitchen and equipment are easy to use and clean, with a well-stocked pantry and cabinet. The laundry was easy to use and the showers and bathrooms were spotless and high-functioning. We ate in town for lunch cooked all our own dinners, including several incredibly cheap servings of oysters. We made fires at night and stayed up late-setting sun. The baby never had a hard time sleeping. Walking around in the grass each morning with coffee and pastries was idyllic. Dinan and Saint-Melo were short drives away; Dinan was preferable. Omaha Beach was 2 hours of easy driving. The drives up from and back to Rennes were likewise a breeze. On check-out day locked the door at 1015 and were in Paris Montparnasse by 1500.
The place slips firmly into our 'perfect escape' category. It was shockingly easy to get to from the UK by ferry. And on arrival, I felt myself slipping into the halcyon days of a childhood adventure. The Vielle Maison is a place I frequently escape to in my mind, with precious memories to relive on busy days. The house, with its unspoilt views to the sea is beautifully laid out, with the sort of style and detail that makes you want to take photos of all its corners. The design is rustic farmhouse meets tasteful modernity, and the house is spacious enough to give larger groups privacy. The beach, a short walk away, was a big highlight for us with rock pools for the kids to explore by day and, when it was adults-only, perfect for a bracing dip before racing back to the house for aperitifs, laughing and feeling ten years younger. The house has a welcoming atmosphere, and it was easy to while away evenings sipping wine and chatting in front of the giant log fire. At the same time, local towns with their maritime charm were enticingly close and encouraged exploration. The regional food was amazing, and we enjoyed exploring the local delicacies: fresh mussels, cider, cheeses. My husband enjoyed a vigorous jog along the spectacular cliff paths. We definitely plan to go back.
“Wonderful Holiday Home”
My family and I (four adults and an infant) stayed at the house last week (May 3-7th 2012) and we had an amazing time. The pictures of the house, though spectacular, do not do it justice. The house is secluded and on walking paths to the beach, close to Cancale, within easy driving distance to Normandy and Mont St Michel. We made dinner in the large kitchen using local produce and watched the sunset and gazed at the stars outside. Valerie was an amazing host, answering any questions and leaving wonderful information about local restaurants, the walking paths, games, info guides and the little things you forget you need when you are on holiday. This is the first time I have reviewed any self catering place we have stayed; I don't think we could have been more thrilled with our stay. We have already started to plan our next trip with other family members.
“A holiday I'd recommend to anyone”
Had an excellent experience at this house in brittany. The location is superb - the house is on a hill overlooking the sea without any obstructions to the view. It's a beautiful old farmhouse with modern amenities. Very clean. Perfect for a family holiday. We went with our two small kids who had endless activities to keep them occupied. There's a lovely secluded beach within short walking distance from the house so we didn't have the hassle of using our car everyday. There are other gorgeous beaches slightly longer walking distance away and a few others well worth driving to as well. Took excursions to nearby towns and villages, including Mont St Michel and St Malo. there's access to a very long hiking trail right outside the door. Village of Cancale (closest to the house) is authentic, full of nice cafes, restaurants and boutiques. We ate very well! amazing fresh seafood, especially local oysters. I'd recommend this house highly to anyone thinking of visiting the region.
“Great versatile, beautiful, and well located home”
We have been several times to la Vieille Maison as a family. It is a perfect vacation spot, so tranquil yet with everything close via a short scenic car ride, and lots of character, amenities, and space. Great water views on the English channel. We highly recommend it!
“A wonderful, wonderful spot--secluded, private, lovely yet near”
This is an old property that has been renovated for the 21st century. The kitchen had everything so after visiting local markets we had gourmet meals. We walked along the beach and around the peninsula. And short drives brought us to Mont St. Michel and the lovely towns in the area along the coast. Then we'd come back to such a comfortable house. We always felt at home there.
“Memorable for all the right reasons”
We had a really wonderful family holiday in 2006 and we plan to return again this Summer. The house is extremely comfortable and unpretentious and the location excellent for the wonderful forest walks and a very pretty, unspoil, safe beach within minutes from the house. The town of Concale has very good restaurants and shops and is typically French without all the tourist elements that detract from it. From arrival to departure everything was made simply and easy. I would highly recommend this house.
