Perched on a ridge with sunrise and sunset views, this vintagel farmhouse is exquisitely sited on 740 feet of high bank waterfront on 25 acres overlooking Useless Bay and the Olympic Mountains to the west, and the Maxwelton Valley to the east. It perches like the eagles nest beside it, taking in magnificent views of the sun rising over the steaming pasture and wetlands, alpacas grazing just outside the windows and velvet sunsets over the mountains and sound.
Leave the cares of the world as you ascend the driveway to the little red farmhouse. It's the simplicity of the place with the wonders of nature on every side that takes you back to the joy of discovery. Just one and one-half hours from Seattle and you"re in a different world. After a night or more in this heaven, you'll leave with a sense of well-being, and a renewed spring in your step.
The two story, 2,730 sf farmhouse sleeps 11 plus with 3 queen beds, and 3 single beds on the second floor with the two new bathrooms. The kitchen is well equipped with a new glass top, two oven electric range, a microwave and full size refrigerator. Good selection of dishes, and cooking equipment including a great library of cookbooks. The living room looks to views both east and west. There is a piano and great collection of books and games to entertain as you cuddle under an alpaca blanket in front of the fire place.
The house is surrounded by a cottage garden with roses, herbs and cutting flowers. There are large expanses of grass and native plantings. The site has wonderful privacy as the nearest house is over 300 feet away to the north and south and on the other side of the Maxwelton Valley to the east. The west is open to a huge view over Useless Bay and the mountains and miles of beach for walking. Extrodinary bird watching as the beach and wetland pasture attract a rich variety of local and migrating birds. There are never ending opportunities for observing the wonders of nature.
There is a herd of 22 alpacas and a guard llama. The alpaca pasture is just outside the living room window and they are amazing animals to watch. You can arrange to join the farm manager for morning feeding and learn about the wonders of alpacas.

“Soulful stay at maxwelton arie”
We had the opportunity to stay in this magical place where eagles and osprey soar . We were fortunate enough to win a bid on a stay at Maxwelton Arie at an auction for Nepalese earthquake relief . We were doubly blessed staying in an histoically significant artistically graced home whose story stretches through generations and is rooted in the land it sits on.. The beach walking with my husband was a time of connection. The girls ran the beach below the house and came back with wind in their hair and rose colored cheeks. The alpacas charmed us. We could have stayed put and and listened to the stories Bill, the caretaker, shared. The home has a quality and essence that really surrounded us with comfort and created a space for our family to break away from routine. The fire pit overlooking the water and mountains as night fell offered us a chance to slow down and appreciate each other and the time we have. I am looking forward to another time here. So much more to explore ont he island. And then again we never have to leave the place to have a time of rejuvenation.
Response from the owner Barbara, So glad you felt your auction purchase was a success. Giving a trip to the farm to auctions is one way I give to causes I support and is a way of sharing the farm with new guests. Now that our capacity has increased to sleep 12, we're building a group of extended families, craft groups, ladies reunions, and PEPS groups who come back sometimes twice a year. Hope your family can become a regular visitor as well. Carolyn
“Perfect spot to create wonderful family memories”
We were a family group of 6 adults and 3 small children, joined for two of the 6 days by 2 more adults with 2 small children. Due to the thoughtful renovation of the upstairs, the house feels spacious and easily accommodates extra people willing to sleep on floor mats or a couch. I would like to echo many of the words written by the guest 19860802 from Phoenix. I think our experiences were much the same. Carolyn personally greeted us at the house to give us a detailed orientation and was readily available by phone during the week. We found this to be an enchanting home and property. The decor of the home is utterly lovely, warm and welcoming and Carolyn has thoughtfully provided for every imaginable way visitors might like to spend their time. As my son put it, it is not a hotel in the form of a house, but rather an inviting and clearly well-loved home. We loved the gardens spilling with cutting flowers, the comfortable outdoor furniture and hammocks, the space for children to run and explore. Bill, the caretaker, gently guided the children (and adults) to become comfortable and familiar with the alpacas and llamas as individuals, and when asked, provided a wealth of information about these endearing animals. This marvelous opportunity is a unique benefit of this property. We spent hours on the shell-covered beach and enjoyed it despite the abundance of seaweed, likely an effect of the hotter than usual weather. We ate most of our meals outdoors, and we will remember peaceful evenings on the lawn watching the sunsets evolve over the Sound and the distant Olympic Mountains. We expected to enjoy our family week, but it was definitely enhanced by spending it together in this magical place. I hope that we find a way to return here someday!
Response from the owner JoAnne, It was a pleasure to have you and your family visit and I am so glad your trip was memorable. It gives me great pleasure to know that the farm is being loved and enjoyed while I am in Seattle working. We love going there with our family and love to share it with others. Hope you can come again. This is a great place for your Seattle family and Wisconsin family to enjoy each other. Carolyn
“A very special place”
We stayed in this beautiful ranch for three nights July 6-9/2012. We have enjoyed our stay. The kids liked the alpaca, the ranch and the beach. You have complete privacy in this house. Very quiet location. The house has everything the family need. We will stay in this house again if we come back to the area. Thank you Carolyn and Bill for making our stay very special.
Response from the owner Thanks for your nice review. It was a pleasure to have you visit from Saudi Arabia and I am so glad you found us on FlipKey. We love to share our little piece of heaven. Carolyn
“Perfect for a Retreat”
We stayed at the aerie for a 3 day retreat with our teacher from Scotland and it was simply perfect! The setting is peaceful and gorgeous: the gardens are lovely and the sunsets spectacular from the bluff out over the Sound. The alpacas and chickens are fascinating companions--they liked our meditations under the trees. I would highly recommend this place to anyone needing to get away from it all. As a previous reviewer stated, it truly is Heaven on Earth!
Response from the owner So glad you enjoyed our little piece of heaven. Hope you can visit again. Carolyn
“Beautiful view, charming house, wonderful gardens!”
We have stayed here many times over the years and it is always a fantastic stay. The grounds are amazing year round with beautiful flowers and herbs. We stayed here over Labor Day weekend with another family with two small children and had a great time. The kids would pick eggs from the hen house for breakfast and then head down the stairs to the beach for blackberry picking. Very cozy and well designed!
Response from the owner Thanks for the review to share your experience with future guests. We look forward to seeing you each time you come and are glad you are part of the Maxwelton Aerie family. Carolyn
“Perfect for kids and adults!”
Our stay in the farmhouse was the perfect setting for my family vacation. My parents were visiting from the east coast and this property was the full northwest package. As my dad said "I wouldn't change a thing". Beautiful views of the sound, eagles, alpacas, misty valley, sunrises and sunsets, mountains. My 18 month old daughter loved feeding the alpacas and Bill (the alpaca caretaker) was so great. He spent about an hour with us telling us all things alpaca. You will enjoy your stay and will not want to leave.
Response from the owner Thanks so much for you kind review. We love providing a special place for multi-generational family gatherings to create treasured family memories in this place of natural beauty and serenity.
“Heaven on Earth!”
Our family has been visiting this special place for over 4 years now and every visit is perfect and like coming back home. I don't think you can find a more serene setting on earth. Look out the west windows for the Puget Sound view with the Olympic Mountains. Turn and out the East windows are roaming fields of the Maxwelton Valley and the sweet alpacas quitely grazing. The house is very comfortable with all the necesseties plus unique games/toys. Summer bbq/bonfire overlooking the sounds is a treat. Best of both worlds: Steps down to the beach for clamming after a morning with Bill, the most patient and gentle caretaker feeding the animals. We can't get enough of the place and we return 1-2/year. Carolyn is very accomodating and wonderful to work with arranging our visits. Our kids are getting older and they still ask when are we going back to the alpaca farm? We love this place!
Response from the owner Thanks for the review and for being part of the Maxwelton Aerie family. We look forward to seeing you every year. Carolyn
