“The Best Vacation House - it's a keeper!”

Reviewed 3 Mar 2014

My husband and I had the month of February to luxuriate in Los Cedros, Costa Rica. Located halfway between Montezuma and Cabuya, it meant easy access to both charming towns. And it boasted a 5 minute walk to the most pristine beach for sunning, swimming and walking, that you could ever dream of. We stayed in a beautiful house designed by an architect for Costa Rican style living. Open porches with cool breezes made our stay there feel as though we were connected to nature while being protected from too much sun exposure! All the rooms had lots of ventilation and were spacious and comfortable. The location of the house is in a lush garden setting, surrounded my native plants, flowers, fruit trees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The local critters who cruised nearby daily added to the charm and ambiance: monkeys, agoutis, some cute lizards, and lots of tropical birds. We were welcomed by our hostess and host, Donna and Tito, who we quickly appreciated as the most caring and accommodating people we could have wished to meet. We loved every minute of our stay here, and know that we have made been treated to an experience that we will always remember!

“The best of Costa Rica and awesome People(rhyme, sort of)”

All amenities listed are true so I won't be redundant there. We were lucky enough to stay at CasaMontezuma for a month and there was not a moment of regret with our decision at any time. The house itself is amazing, a beautiful structure indeed. With 5 people there it never seemed crowded and after staying at another house last year and visiting other's homes I can say that this place is unique and a good value. The outdoor areas are big and really comfortable, and with the incredible weather we spent most time lounging there. The location of the house is pretty ideal. Literally about a 3 minute walk to the breath taking and secluded beach where you can feel like you own the place many times of day. You also get to be equal distance from both Montezuma and Cabuya, two really cool and different types of villages. An easy walk, bike(bikes included) ride or bus trip to either. There is a hill behind the house with superb views of the cost and a pretty close by neighbor is a fisherman who sells the freshest seafood nearly daily from his yard. The owners Donna and Tito are who you want to rent from, really. They are endlessly informative and helpful, and friendly and entertaining as well. From day one all the way to the end they were great. Many times Donna offered rides on her way to town and assisted with planning and arranging day trips we took which would have otherwise been less successful. Tito has a vast knowledge of all things Costa Rican and his well of insights will have you feeling like a local. Casamontezuma really is a winner, cause you feel like you are at home, less like in a rental. But not just an ordinary home but a castle, cause it is cleaned for you every week!! Book with confidence and have the most relaxing time of your life. P.s. If the listed reasons don't sell you also know there are two resident dogs with personality to spare and a very charming pig and I can't imagine better ambassadors to Costa Rica than those three.

Response from the owner Just want to make sure that prospective guests know that the "resident dogs and pig" are at all times confined to a fenced area on a neighboring property. They are NOT residents of Casa Montezuma rental house. Guests are welcome to interact with the pets, but they are not part of the rental experience unless you choose to do that. The dogs are trained not to bark at any time, are kept inside at night, and are never permitted to run loose on the property.

“Joy in the jungle”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2014

I celebrated Christmas at Casa Montezuma with my three adult children, surrounded by jungle, visited by coati mundis and raccoons, lizards and aguate, with the sound of the howler monkeys in the background. We were met by Donna when our bus arrived in Montezuma and given a very useful drive around the next day to orient us to the area. Throughout our holiday, Donna and Tito were always ready to help in any way they could, from pumping up bike tires to getting information and making calls for us. They've thought through what will make a person's stay convenient, including a cellphone for local use and a great wifi connection. The house functions beautifully, with a completely separate kitchen (so early risers don't wake the others sleeping in) that is well equipped for any kind of cooking you might want to do. We feasted on local fish, that you can purchase from the fisherman who lives a five minute bike ride away. The outdoor porches are great spaces for hanging out, reading, opening Christmas presents, watching the animals who come right up onto the porch . . . The bedrooms are comfortable; it's wonderful sleeping with the breeze blowing through the screened windows and the howler monkeys howling in the background. Although there are houses not that far away, you would never know it because the jungle around gives complete privacy. The beach at the end of the road is beautiful at any tide, but especially good for swimming at high tide. The water is amazingly warm; you can float around forever. We walked, biked, hiked, taxied, and went from Montezuma to Cabuya, from Mal Pais to Playa Carmen. A highlight was the hike to Cabo Blanco; we only wished we'd started earlier in the morning so that we could have had more time on the gorgeous beach there. I'm typing this looking out at blowing snow and a white world, thinking back on the warmth and color of those Casa Montezuma days. It was a wonderful time and I would highly recommend it.

“Spacious home and beautiful surroundings! Animal lovers rejoice!”

Casa Montezuma is a magnificent vacation home. You are surrounded by lush jungle and the chittering and twittering of innumerable creatures. Like Donna says, if you just wait, they will come! During the day, hummingbirds, agoutis, Capuchin monkeys, raccoons, and a variety of butterflies, are just a fraction of the wildlife you can enjoy as you sit on the veranda! The cooling breezes and gecko chirps will lull you to sleep in the evening. Casa Montezuma is very spacious and comfortable and Donna and Tito are always available to answer questions and offer recommendations about sightseeing and yummalicious eateries. You will feel a sense of peace and remoteness but you are within easy access of the towns of Cabuya and Montezuma. This is a great place to be introduced to the Nicoya Peninsula lifestyle.

“Paradise in the Jungle”

This is the Costa Rica you've always dreamed about. Wake up to the sound of howler monkeys. Sit on the veranda with a cold drink and watch hummingbirds. Walk a short distance to a deserted beach. The house is clean, tidy and the yard is landscaped beautifully. There is no air conditioning but plenty of fans are provided. I would recommend this house to adventure seekers and active people. No recommended for those who cannot walk stairs or a short distance to the beach. Donna and Tito will take care of you and make you feel welcome. They will make sure you get to the grocery store upon arrival for supplies. Outstanding service and I would recommend to anyone seeking a unique experience in Costa Rica.

“Wildlife central! Best jungle house ever!”

The moment we arrived, the owners Donna and Tito, welcomed us in to their secret spot within minutes making check in super easy. They made us feel right at home and gave us so much useful information. The house is just perfect. It has everything you need and even has a huge dog kennel/cage if you do not want to take him to town with you. The house is comfortable and looks like a jungle house with some "Swiss Family Robinson" touches! I wish we had started our trip here instead of only staying for our last 2 nights because we did not want to leave so soon. I will definitely recommend this place to our clients who travel with us since we are San Jose based tour guides and cannot wait to go back! Donna is so sweet and Tito even told us where to go and grab some fresh fish from the local fisherman to cook in the huge kitchen and even had a small BBQ! All of the rooms and bathrooms were nice and very clean and the decks have books, playing cards, dominoes, etc. to keep you busy with your family when relaxing. Beach and bath towels were provided which was super nice and free WiFi. The grounds are so well manicured and plants, trees, and flowers all over making it a perfect spot for pretty butterflies, agoutis, Capuchin and Howler monkeys, coatis, birds and geckoes to come and hang out with us :) I also liked the security we felt leaving the house unlocked and didn't even use the safe while we were out exploring the surrounding beaches because Donna and Tito were always on site. It really made us feel at ease and just all around they are great people to talk to. We felt like we knew them and were very sad to leave. Only thing that keeps me smiling is that I know where to keep going to from now on when I visit Montezuma again!!! Thanks for everything, Tito and Donna. P/S: Azim sends Pi a kiss!

Response from the owner We are always very happy to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay. This reviewer touched on some of our strong points: unique and comfortable house, abundant wildlife, and the very safe and secure environment- in a natural setting. We live next door to the rental house, so we are available and happy to help with anything that may come up. At the same time, we ensure the complete privacy of our guests. This house is surrounded on three sides by undeveloped land, so our guests enjoy a sense of being very close to nature, with no noise from close neighbors or road traffic. Perfect relaxation, privacy, and a stress-free stay: this is the setting we strive to provide for our guests.

Will man keine Ruhe, fährt man einfach nach Montezuma (ca.3km). Best wishes to Donna & Tito, Pie & Chuleta

Our group arrived by two separate methods on 4/12, and as soon as we entered the gate we knew this was the right place to stay. The grounds are well manicured without taking away the natural feeling of the jungle around. The property is very welcoming and you instantly feel like you're at home. The home is beautifully constructed with ample space for six with a great layout. Despite no a/C the rooms remained cool and comfortable for sleeping, and visitors of the insect type were surprisingly minimal. The walk from the home to the beach is a non issue and just created new opportunities for seeing wildlife and experiencing the area. I'd suggest visiting the beach at low tide to scope out where the rocks are and to see where the good sand clearings are, once you figure out where to swim it's wonderful and exceptionally beautiful. We consistently used the bus to and from town and taxis are easily available after the bus stops running. Montezuma town center has a positive vibe and a charm that I haven't experienced anywhere else, plenty of shops, access to tours and places to eat as well as two supermarkets and the occasional farmers market make it easy to prepare meals at the house. The provided bikes were very handy for our fish buying excursion and exploring in general. The owners were extremely helpful from first contact about the property to arranging our taxi back the the airport. They are never intrusive but always available. I feel fortunate that we were able to spend our vacation in such a beautiful home, but the icing on the cake was the wonderful service and care shown by it's owners. I have already recommended it as a vacation destination to friends and family, and hope to return as soon as possible.

“Fabulous Jungle/Beach Experience”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2012

We spent four weeks beginning mid-January 2012 in Casa Montezuma. Donna and Tito were excellent hosts; helpful in getting us to their location, generous in sharing their knowledge of the area wildlife and in accessing resources needed to make our stay memorable. The house is fabulous; well designed, constructed mainly of lovely wood and well maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked with appliances and cooking utensils. The property is located far enough from the beach and main road to be peaceful and completely private yet close enough to make the five minute walk to the magnificent beach or to the bus stop for travel to the nearby towns of Montezuma or Cabuya easy (10 minute $1.50 ride). It is also beautifully landscaped with tropical vegetation and abutting natural jungle affords plenty of amazing bird and animal viewing from your doorstep. We highly recommend this lovely property for a wonderful tropical experience/ vacation amid lush grounds and bountiful jungle. Casa Montezuma has the peacefulness of a rural setting with easy access to shops, restaurants and markets of the nearby towns. And the ocean. So fun.

We saw more wildlife (howlers and white-faced monkeys, agouti, coatimundi, iguana) here than all the other locations we visited in Costa Rica together (6)! It's also a birder's paradise! Anyone wanting more of a nature experience will love this house. It's well-equipped and an architectural oddity making the stay even more interesting. The owners, Donna and Tito, are wonderful hosts. They know the area well, from secret beaches to buying fresh fish! The location is great-just a short walk across the road to the ocean and just 3 km outside of town. We had a wonderful, unforgettable experience in Montezuma!
