“Absolutely lovely, cosy apartment with fabulous walks from the door”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2014

As mentioned in the description there is no view from the apartment BUT there is plenty of seating in the gardens and the view from there is amazing. Very tranquil area. There is a public footpath running through the grounds, which is very handy. Approx 20 min walk in one direction leads you to the lakeshore, there is a lovely lakeside walk with good path. In the other direction up the side of the Cuckoo Brow Inn you can pick up the path to Cleife Heights, absoultely stunning scenery. Hilltop is 10 minute walk down the road with the lovely Tower Inn opposite. The pub is very busy, especially for food, so get there very early for any chance of a table. Reserve a table at Cuckoo Brow Inn if you intend to eat there, esp on Sat. There is everything you need in the apartment. Central heating if it is chilly. Electric blanket. Good amount of space for 2 people and dog, small kitchen, but who wants to spend time in there when you are on holiday !!?? Highly recommended

“Wonderful home from home”

Reviewed 7 Dec 2013

This property is a little different from a "normal" Lakeland cottage as it is an apartment, part of a beautiful old house at Far Sawrey. The location is excellent, just a few minutes drive from the ferry and on the quieter and, in my view, more picturesque side of Windermere away from the tourist hot spots. Having said that you are just five minutes drive from Hawkshead, one of the most beautiful villages in the Lake District. The property was clean and beautifully furnished. The owners have made a real effort to make this very homely with lots of interesting old furniture and "nick nacks" which gives it a lovely cosy feel. We stayed in December so were glad of the efficient heating, including a real log fire which was great. The bed is wonderfully comfortable, just what is needed after long walks in the local countryside. The property is equipped with everything you need for self catering. The owners have thoughtfully provided a freezer in the nearby laundry room where you will also find a washing machine and dryer. There was a very helpful information book provided which gave us lots of details about things to do and places to go. If you fancy eating out the wonderful Cuckoo Brow Inn is five minutes walk away. Great food and check out the old stables on the lower floor. It is obvious Malcolm & Kate care very much about this property and it shows. We would certainly consider coming back if we visit the Lakes again.

“A bargain that certainly doesn't cut any corners to be one.”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2013

What a bargain and what a lovely place to stay. My girlfriend and I took a trip to the lakes at the beginning of august and were fortunate enough to be able to book The Rockery Suite for the time we required. It is a good size, the bed was comfy and the lounge was large but cosy. It is in a great location sandwiched between Lakes Windermere and Esthwaite and has the added advantage of being pet friendly so our cat was able to enjoy the holiday with us. The location meant very reasonable drives to almost everywhere we wanted to walk,(Skafell Pike was a bit of a trek but in my opinion you'd only go there once for the "biggest mountain in England" tick as other areas of the lakes have far superior scenery) and the local pub, which serves good food meant we could enjoy a drink with dinner, before strolling up a short lane to the country house. Firewood and kindling are provided in abundance and we took advantage with the pleasure of an open fire almost every evening. This was the cats favourite part of the day. If you do decide to stay here two words of warning. It's self catering so toilet roll is not provided (I found this weird but that's probably just me). And secondly, whilst the kitchen has all the utensils you'll need, there are no herbs and spices provided so bring your own. But don't let this put you off as there's always the occasions when a guest will leave a full case of beer in one of the cupboards to be enjoyed by the next participants. (Yup, I did that, hope you enjoyed it). Oh, almost forgot. the router for the internet needed to be booted every day. Fine, but the router is in the above apartment so it meant knocking on their door every evening, this was okay but a more consistent connection would have been nice. Finally, the house keeper Helga is very approachable and helpful, to further enhance the tranquil stay we had in such beautiful surroundings. I can thoroughly recommend a stay here, my gripes above were a tiny part of an overall lovely time.

Response from the owner I am pleased that you had such a lovely break Nick. Thank you for letting us know about the wifi. Our co-owner who looks after the house wifi has set up an automatic once-every-24-hours rebooter, so I am surprised that there was a problem – we shall continue to keep a close eye on this. Sawrey Knotts is at "the end of the line" so the speed can be variable - around 2 Megabytes Per Second (no fibre optic cable to our lovely quiet country location yet!), but that shouldn't affect the router and sub-router. Maybe the house should change its routers. As I say, we shall keep a close eye on other feedback about the wifi through the Autumn. There should have been a toilet roll to "start you off"! I shall check this with our excellent cleaners Syma & John.

“Excellent accommodation”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2013

We arrived from Iceland for a holiday in the Lake District last July and stayed in the Rockery Suite for a week. The Suite is very comfortable with all the amenities you expect in luxury accommodation. The temperature in the flat was comfortable despite the warm weather. The small garden at the back of the house was an added bonus where we enjoyed drinks in the evening sun. The Rockery Suite is in an old family house, nicely situated in the heart of the Lake District with beautiful views over the surrounding area. A superb holiday accommodation.

“Lovely, peaceful apartment in a wonderful location.”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2013

We arrived at the apartment to be greeted by a deer on the drive. The Rockery Suite was perfect for us, beautifully decorated and cosy. We loved the sitting room with its beautiful open fire. The stairs proved very difficult for our ageing dog but thankfully there is a rear access he could use. The house, Sawrey Knotts, is lovely and peaceful - its so quiet we really felt as if we were the only ones there. This apartment has been one of the best we have stayed in over the past 30 years and we are already discussing a return visit.

“Everything you need... and more!”

Reviewed 28 Mar 2013

It's a lovely place to hide from everyday hustle! Equipped with everything your heart desires, the Rockery Suite is pure comfort - so good that you find it hard to leave - but its a pleasure to come back to after a long days walk. Good location with plenty to do in the surrounding areas, such as walks to Wray Castle alongside lake Windermere, Grizedale forest (and High Man), Hawkshead and much more. Pubs nearby, so is Beatrix Potters' former home, Hill Top. A place to revisit!

“An ideal escape.”

Reviewed 19 Feb 2013

The Rockery Suite is a lovely, welcoming apartment nestling in the hills between Windermere and Esthwaite Water. It is clean, comfortable and quiet - an ideal escape from the rat-race and the urban sprawl of modern life. The apartment has everything that you would want (at least it had everything that I wanted!), including a good sized comfortable bed and free logs and kindling for a roaring log fire. Alas, in my case it was only a roaring kindling fire! Though that is a reflection on my fire laying abilities rather than a fault of the apartment. There's a handy pub just 3 minutes walk away in Far Sawrey and one 10 minutes walk away in Near Sawrey. Indeed, the one in Near Sawrey, The Tower Bank arms is an ideal resting spot for those of you whose partner insists on visiting Beatrix Potters house around the corner, something that I have done on more than one occasion. Handy for the ferry, only 3 minute drive (20 minute walk - foot passengers only 50p) and the delights of Bowness and Windermere. Hawkshead, where Wordsworth attended school is only 10 minutes by car, an hour by foot; a pleasant walk when it's fine, combine it with a climb up Latterbarrow for some magnificent views, though not so nice in the snow, rain, sleet and various combinations of the same. The week fairly sped by and I was sorry to leave, but I left safe in the knowledge that I will be back.

“The perfect New Year hideaway”

Reviewed 19 Jan 2013

We wanted a New Year retreat from it all, in our favourite mountain home. We got more than we thought possible. The Suite is very comfortable, the service excellent and friendly (Helga, the House Keeper, is a treasure!) and the log fire to die for when the wind howls and the rain batters down. We did manage to get out for some walks and found several good ones close by, and some very good pubs all within a short range. 'Unable to stay unwilling to leave'! We will be back.

“Lovely place, quiet, comfortable, well equiped”

Lovely place, cozy and spacious, well kitted out, everything u could need for a quiet getaway.

“What a lovely house and The Rockery Suite was so homely.”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2012

This was my first stay in the lakes and I had a fantatic time. The Rockery Suite is located in such a beautiful and convenient position. It has good facilities and the lounge feels very spacious and there is an amazing selection of Dvd's and videos. I really loved staying here.
