Very Good

Wonderful relaxing location to get away for a weekend or longer. Cheryl and Rich are excellent hosts. The cottage is perfect and Cheryl and Rich have done an amazing job preserving the history of this little school. Easy drive to many local attractions, museums and to Mt Graylock (which has some beautiful hikes).

Response from the owner Thank you - so glad you had a relaxing stay. Hope to see you again!

“A wonderful experience”

My parents really enjoyed their stay. They said everything was wonderful. It is a very charming and has wonderful history. They really thought the baby horses playing in the field across the street was an over the top touch.

Response from the owner So glad that your parents enjoyed their stay for a special family weekend. We look forward to seeing them again! Cheryl

“Most unique place we've ever stayed!”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2013

Peaceful, quaint and within minutes of the route round to Mt. Greylock and incredibly hikes, waterfalls and views. I love finding a place where I am equally happy to be lounging in our lodgings as I am to be exploring the area. The happiest part out our trip was cooking the farm fresh eggs, bread and greens and cheese for breakfast that we'd gotten from the local organic farm cooperative. I recommend it to anyone, families, couples, single people looking to relax and get out of the city.

Response from the owner Emily - thank you for the glowing review! So glad you both had a good time. We look forward to your return visit! Cheryl

“Better than the pictures!”

The schoolhouse was so charming, very get away from it all. If you plan to hike Greylock - this is the place to stay! The base parking lot is about 5 minutes away. The schoolhouse is actually on a very quiet road. Cheryl was great at organizing the stay and making sure we were taken care of. The schoolhouse has plenty of romantic qualities but was also very family friendly. The perfect combination for our first get away with our baby. The only drawback is the distance from the other towns. However, Old Forge had the best food I have had in a while and it is only 5 minutes away.

“Great location in a unique space”

Reviewed 15 Nov 2011

We brought our kids up for a weekend stay in the Stone Cottage for some fall hiking in the Berkshires. The place is well-situated on the slopes of Mt. Greylock, and hiking trails are easy to access just a short drive up the road. The owners were very gracious and did everything to ensure we were comfortable, and we were invited to stroll through the pasture behind their house to visit the horses and cows peacefully grazing there. The cottage itself is unusual in that it is an old schoolhouse with an upstairs that's been converted into a living space, and our grade school children really enjoyed playing school downstairs. The upstairs living space has only a couple of windows, so it can be a bit dark and there's no view, but it's otherwise very cozy and extremely quiet. The kitchenette is basic and workable, but don't plan any ambitious cooking (as we did our first night). Better to take advantage of the decent restaurants nearby.

“Great house, great location”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2011

We had to book last minute (because the hurricane washed away our booked rental) and, luckily for us, Cheryl had a last minute cancellation. She was very helpful taking and coordinating the booking on less than a day's notice. We had an amazing stay. The house is very interesting and cozy, and the location was amazing. We were two families with two young children, and they couldn't get enough of the farm animals living on every side of the house. The school setting downstairs was fun too, they loved the chalkboard. The owners were very helpful and friendly, and the neighbors were all very nice and perfectly willing to show us their animals (pony rides for the kids). The general location is beautiful, very accessible to surrounding towns, farmers markets, supermarkets, etc. The only criticism is that the kitchen facilities are very cramped and sparsely stocked. But, it's understandable since it's not a huge building and you are there for vacation so you are probably eating out a lot. For us though, when we travel, we like to pick up local ingredients and cook at home. The only thing it really needs is a cutting board. We brought our own kitchen knives so I don't remember the state of the knives. It does have a great outdoor sitting area with a nice charcoal grill, so we would grill our dinner and relax until the stars came out. We can't wait to stay there again.

Response from the owner Thank you - so glad it was a great experience for you. Thanks for letting me know about the cutting board - I will make it easier to find next time. Look forward to seeing you again!

“Quaint and Confortable”

The girls loved laying school in the old one-room schoolhouse. Perfect location for hiking, biking, boating, shopping, shopping, golfing, eating, and sight seeing. We will be back.

“Great location, with wonderful scenic spots very close by”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2011

The best thing about this place was the location. We came here to see the foliage, and we didn't have to go anywhere else driving around looking for it. This is right on the road to Mt Greylock which has so many hiking trails and scenic overlooks. The Old Stone School cottage is a quaint setup, and the classroom doubles as a bedroom. This is not much of a bedroom, but just a big room with 2 makeshift beds in it. The room upstairs has a nice big bed and another spare bed too, and the room is really spacious. We spent almost the entire night here playing various games. The rooms could use a little cleaning, and the beddings were not super comfortable. The hosts were very cordial and accommodating, and helped us out with reco's etc. I would recommend this place for it's ideal location, if not anything else.
