“Hidden Paradise”

Reviewed 27 Mar 2014

Casitas Calinas is definitely a hidden paradise. My parents & I rented two of their amazing little cabins. While the dirt road was pretty tough (definitely need 4wheel drive) to get there what waited for us was fabulous. The road to the cabins is difficult, so you will want to be back to the cabins before dark. I would recommend grocery shopping given the road and distance from town. The cabins are perfectly furnished and equipped with all the necessities (stove, microwave, dishes/pans, mini fridge). Nadja has even stocked the fridge with some basics, so if you arrive late you will not starve! Every detail is thought through. The grounds are perfectly manicured. I would say that while the place is lovely, that 4 days would be my max amount of time I would want to stay, only because it is a little more remote than I'd like. It would be a perfect place for a family reunion where you might have lots of activities around the grounds, but for me (being 33) I can only take a few days of "relaxation" before I start to get a little stir crazy. My family did go on various day excursions while staying at the cabins. There is a cave tubing excursion nearby. I forget the name of the place, but our guide, Israel, was extremely knowledgable, friendly and gives you confidence that he is legitimate, which is not how we felt about the other guides soliciting us. (Do not pick up a guide at the gate to drive in. They will be waitinf for you there and will try to talk you into it, but wait until you are to the establishment before you agree.)Nadja has Israel's info. I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful hidden gem. Enjoy your time in Belize!

“Carefree Casitas”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2013

Just returned from a wonderful visit to Belize, where we had the good fortune to book the cabins at Casitas Calinas outside of Belmopan in the Cayo district. We had a fantastic time, using the Casitas as a base to visit the market in Belmopan, Belize Zoo, Xuanantunich Mayan ruins, San Ignacio, Blue Hole Park, St. Helena's Cave, and an overnight trip to Guatemala to see the Tikal site. The cabins were clean and comfortable, with all the needed amenities, including a coffeemaker, compact fridge, full sized stove, and an assortment of pots/pans/utensils. Everything was in working order, and the a/C unit was more than adequate for the size of the cabin. Water was good (and plentiful), and the grounds were splendid, with a vast assortment of tropical plants and flowers, as well as tons of colorful birds, lizards, basilisks and the occasional howler monkey. There are numerous paths and trails to walk on the property, and the river that runs through it was great for a quick dip or a leisurely tube ride to cool down. The small extra fee for the 'relax' package includes access to the sporting equipment, A/C, and 'starter' groceries, which turned out to be enough for a dinner, a couple of breakfasts, several pieces of fruit, and virtually all our coffee/tea needs - there were even a couple of Belikins! Plus You will get 2 loads of laundry done during your stay as part of the package. One of the most interesting parts of the stay was the power system that makes it all possible. Silvan is more than happy to share his knowledge and tour the power plant with you if you are so inclined (we definitely were!) Come to relax in the abundant hammocks, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and drift down the river. Enjoy fresh eggs from the free-range chickens in the morning and various fruits from plants located outside your door when in season. Casitas Calinas is a perfect spot to stay put or use as a base to visit Belize further. We will definitely return if we ever get back that way.

My stay at Casitas Calinas was one of the best expiriences ever in central america. The curtiousness and professionalism of the hosts were second to none. The grounds are well manicured and the house cabin very homey and clean. Miles of bike trails and the interior jungle setting were magical. We were treated very well with all needs taken care of without asking. The hosts were always there but always respecting your privacy. Loved it!!

“Get to know the real Belize from here. Fantastic people and loc”

Reviewed 31 Jan 2013

We stayed in this little (bigger than most hotel rooms) Mennonite cabin for 7 weeks while we explored Belize and looked for a place to eventually live. It is fully equipped and in a lovely location if you like the rainforest. I would stay here again. The owners are 100% there for you. My wife got hurt while I was out of the country and Nadjia actually took my wife to the hospital and stayed with her until I arrived. The Staff are wonderful. Herbert keeps the place perfect and Shelley keeps the rooms clean and my laundry fresh. This is the perfect place to stay to get to know Belize. Be prepared: You will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle (the road has foot deep puddles during the rain storms) and there are no televisions (drove me crazy so I made sure every place I stayed while I explored has a flat screen...it was good for me!!!). You better make sure you can talk with your spouse or travel companion as the only company you are likely to have many nights is howler monkeys and J.C. Lizards. My only complaint is that the internet is satellite and stinks. It is next to impossible to run a business from these cabins if you depend on the internet. I managed to work around this by getting up at 4:00 am to communicate with my office when necessary (and I learned that they did just fine without me... imagine that!!!). I am very tempted to give them a bad review just to keep it to myself. This is the best deal in Belize with wonderful owners and staff. We have stayed at all of the big fancy places all over the world (paris ritz, claridges, the Oriental in Thailand, Chaa Creek in Belize etc) and this little place does the trick of providing what we needed just as well. The Ritz this is not but you aren't going there to have room service 3 times a day. If you are going there to learn about the rainforest and/or just to see belize then this is the place.

“All you could want for!”

Wow! what a great vacation! Very clean and comfortable smaller cabana set in a beautiful park like setting in the jungle.Nice screened in porch, were we sat many an evening and relaxed listening to the many tropical birds and howller monkeys. Located very central and close to the capital, makes it very convenient to open markets and site seeing. Will return when it is not rainy season.
