“It's a magical place”
Our family had a terrific stay here in early December. Joyce was quick to respond to our many questions & provided lots of helpful tips & info before we arrived, so there were no surprises whatsoever. The apartment was spacious, clean & well-maintained, with just about everything we could possibly want (except for an oven, but we didn't end up cooking that much anyway). The purified water from the taps tastes pretty good, but if you're really particular about your water you might prefer bottled. Perfect location in the middle of blissfully quiet, uncrowded Half Moon Bay - easy walking distance from Yal-ku lagoon & a few good restaurants - and we loved always being just a few steps away from a palapa-shaded lounger on the beach! Beds are comfortable, wi-fi connection was better than expected (of course it didn't work 100% the time, but when it did it was surprisingly fast), and the central a/C is great for when the heat & humidity get to be too much. Yes, the beach is a little bit rocky, and occasionally the seas get stirred up making it a bit treacherous for swimming, but those are good times to check out the many other activities available in the vicinity (or just sit on the beach & relax!). When conditions are right, the snorkeling in the shallow bay is quite good. I definitely recommend a stop for groceries on your way in one of the mega-supermarkets of Playa del Carmen - prices & selection are much better than you'll find here - though the little convenience store across the street was pretty well-stocked with basics. Also, it seems like the atms in the village work only occasionally, so you might want to grab some cash before you get here, too. We definitely hope to return to akumal someday, and I can't think of a better place to stay. Highly recommended!
Response from the owner Thank you for your great review. I have been remiss in not getting back to my reviews to respond. It has been a busy year with trips back and forth to Akumal to upgrade the condos. I look forward to your return to Playa Caribe soon. Thank you again, Joyce
“Magical Location, magical condo”
The magic started as soon as we opened the door to the condo - it was exactly as described, and more besides. To be able to walk down a few steps into the ocean was magic; the condo was obviously loved and cared for by Joyce and Ron, and we quickly felt at home. Spacious and well equipped - an ideal location to base a holiday from if you want to visit Tulum, or Coba or Chichen Itza or the Mayan Riviera. Restaurant La Lunita is a short walk down the road (5 mins) to the north for a more formal experience; but we also enjoyed La Buena Vide, a more relaxed beach bar, about the same distance the other way - also worth going to akumal pueblo and trying "The Last Mayan" for a more Mexican experience. Would we recommend Playa Caribe 2 to our friends - Yes, Yes, Yes. What did we miss - being English we missed a kettle - we do like a cup of tea; and we also couldn't find any egg cups for our boiled eggs - but those two minor omissions didn't detract from what was a really excellent condo.
My husband and I stayed at the condo for a week. Everything and everyone was wonderful. Its nice that Playa Caribe has a reverse osmosis water system so that you can use the water from any faucet. Kitchen has all necessary appliances and accessories. Augustine will bring you a grill on request. (We bought two beautiful steaks from Sam's Club in akumal for Valentines day.) Less than 5 minute walking distance to nice restaurant just north of the condo or casual beach bar just south. Fifteen minute walking distance to town where there are several fine restaurants. 20 minutes drive to Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. You can snorkel by just walking into the water outside the front door. If its windy, head to Yal Ku (fee) or akumal Bay. Lots of turtles and beautiful fish. The only suggestion I would have is to be sure to bring coffee!
Response from the owner Thank you for the review. It's nice to know people enjoy!
