Description from owner
A Legal & Registered Hawaii Transient Accommodation
GRANDMAS HOUSE (with a few twists)
Intimate, eclectic, at times eccentric, romantic and whimsical Upcountry Volcano Village Mountain Cottage.
I treat my guests as I myself would hope to be treated while out in the world traveling.
This is Your vacation and Your special time.
As your host at the cottage I want to make you feel comfortable , well kept and at home while for the most part remaining invisible unless requested.
The cottage is Not a 'pack them in like sardines' rental to produce a maximum rental income.
It has two bedrooms, a large living room, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a wonderful and well equipped kitchen and a private forest deck.
There is room to roam and you won't be stepping over futons, pull out couches or tripping over your luggage or one another.
The entire private cottage space is yours.
The cottage has a maximum capacity for Four guests.
Living in a Native Hawaiian Rain Forest that is located at the 4,000 foot summit elevation of Mt. Kilauea and Halemaumau Crater has its challenges on air quality both inside and out. Volcano is beautiful beyond compare, but you have to work at cleaning / treating the air a bit. You don't need to unduly "Fear" the air terribly, but it is, at any rate a good and sensible thing to consider when visiting Volcano. The cottage is well equipped to keep these assorted elements under control. The active volcano by nature discharges volcanic gasses are called "VOG".
Thankfully most of the time we have our Trade Winds which take much of this to the South and out to sea. The rain forest is by definition, a Wet environment. Moisture, Mold and Mildew can present problems as well. The cottage has Three Levoit Carbon Hepa filters running throughout the cottage. These really help.control all of the mentioned elements from volcanic gas, odors, spores to mold and dust and mildew , etc.
( good article on clean air and treatments: click here )
There are also Two dehumidifiers ( air moisture removal, which also run with air cleaning filters )
One is dedicated solely to the bathroom area. Dehumidifiers are essential in Volcano to keep a constant cottage humidity at a healthy comfortable 50% - 60%. There is a very nice built in heater / Electric Fireplace which is clean, efficient, cozy, charming and easy to operate. The beds are both equipped with heated Sunbeam mattress pads which are wonderful, cozy and warm. Top that with memory foam and heavy 200 gram Flannel Sheets and you get some real mountain comfort through the nights.
A bit of a step back in time, the cottage is adorned with a beautiful and interesting blend of Early American Folk & Impressionist Art, 19th c. photography, fine vintage floral and avian embroidery compositions and a wealth of other worldly curiosities from times past.
After exploring the Volcanoes National Park you can, at your will and leisure, come home ... plug into our tech saturated world to your hearts content OR be Bold and dare to opt out for a while and just enjoy the simpler pleasures of life that the lush mountain rain forest and its chattering, happy native bird inhabitants provide. Clear star studded evenings and night time Volcano viewing offer easily attained additional pleasures just minutes from the cottage.
The cottage is well stocked with many quality Ravensburg Jig Saw puzzles as well as many family oriented word and card games for fun evenings at home around the fireplace.
There is also a large and diverse island oriented library of many books on Big Island, Hiking, Birds, Fishes, Shells and Tropical Flowers.
The Kitchen area is extremely well appointed and it is entirely possible to produce home cooked or baked gourmet dishes if one is inclined.
The Kitchen is equipped with a wonderful KitchenAid Mixer.
There is a complete diverse assortment of Corning Amber Vision cookware as well as the more traditional cast iron and ceramic ware.
If you know how to cook or bake well, this kitchen will live up to your needs and abilities.
There are fine Old English Bone China antique dishes, tea cups and such to serve your creations upon.
There are also a wealth of specialty cook books in the cottage for inspiration.
The ever ready & willing waffle maker with fixings & French Press coffee maker make easing into your Volcano mornings simple and pleasurable. Fresh whole coffee beans, a variety of teas, lots of fresh island spring / deep well water are always provided for guests.
A creative, private and unusual mountain haven. The cottage offers 1200 square feet of quiet, room to roam open space with a high vaulted open living room clear story ceiling. The second floor master bedroom offers a cozy Cal King memory foam topped bed individually heated on both sides with exceptional linens ( Tribeca 200 gram Heavy Flannel Sheets which are truly heavenly )
There is an additional second smaller bedroom upstairs, with a nice cozy memory foam topped and heated, flannel sheeted Full Size bed.
Both bedrooms have their own internet connected televisions with Netflix.
There is also a small water closet upstairs for convenient evening needs.
This is a 1/2 Bathroom with toilet and sink.
The cottage is equipped with a Graco Pack 'n Play On the Go Travel Playard, Go Green with mattress, sheets and waterproof mattress pad, safety gates & electrical plug covers.
INSIDE the cottage is a NON SMOKING environment. (smoking is not a problem on the OUTSIDE deck area) High Speed WiFi & Ethernet internet access are provided.
Both bedrooms and the Living Room have internet enabled televisions offering guests Netflix, Music & Web Access.( 3 total)
A private open air deck outfitted with Lounge chairs is nestled under the canopy of the secluded rainforest of Hapu'u Tree Ferns, Magnolia, Camellia and a host of other native plants amidst the sounds of songbirds and at times our Native I'o hawks soaring overhead.
The cottage is vintage 1940's Hawaii and has been endowed with an eclectic, creative blend of materials in a Victorian / Deco manner. Located in the original historic section of Volcano Village, the cottage is about one mile from the entry to Volcanoes National Park. One could easily spend two full days exploring this very large park and still not see it all.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay for the week, Richard was really helpful in pointing some places out that might be interesting to us to see.He even offered to help carry our bag
“Superb location and comforts”
Richard goes out of his way to welcome and accomadate his guests. So close to the park and all points of interest, but the cottage feels like you're isolated on a private reserve. The cottage is spotless and maintained very well. DEFINTELY coming back to Richard's cottage!
“We found a gem!”
This cottage is amazing. I was intrigued with the photos, and was so happy with our stay there! It's far better than any picture could show. This lovely gem in Volcano land has everything! Richard, the host, is beyond helpful and you can see how passionate he is about his guest cottage. She's the "old girl" and she is lovely. The Volcano Cottage This "old girl" offers more than you need, From a porcelain cup, And some very old spoons, To a warm fireplace, where you can read. Eclectic things from eras gone by, Yet technical savvy for those that need. Lush rain forest and chirping birds, Stay a bit longer is her earnest plead. Warm and cozy with nostalgia everywhere, Peace and quiet with moments to share Perfectly placed, and perfectly splendid, Run by a gentlemen, your every wish attended. My return is certain, I can't stay away, She's offered her best, in an easy stylish way. I loved the ambiance, and the cat named Luli, Thank you Richard, from yours truly.
Response from the owner A love poem about the Volcano cottage?! Touches my heart, not a little but a very great big lottage The Old Girl thrills to give simple comforts galore When she meets a traveler with needs exactly as yours A house not a home when empty, idle, dreary But lights up easily, happily no longer weary. Memories occur within her walls, under her rafter Friends, wife's, husband's, parents, child's happy laughter. Tis all these little simple things, yet more Guests bless this old house with With every pass thru her door She and I thank you Our Dear Guests Sit down Dear Bones, Flame a fire, light a candle This Old Girl will with a smile take care of the rest. A simple old house indeed gets imbued By the memories and actions within her which ensued. Every day is a gift Her and I are blessed to live Thank you dear guest for the opportunity to give. What a sight to behold As you cross yon threshold Come visit us again My guest my friend. All said duly truly xoRichard and Luli
“Wonderfully comfortable and relaxing!”
I'm very glad we chose the Volcano cottage over a traditional hotel! The cottage was so comfortable and quiet, and had tons of interesting collectibles and artwork to enjoy. Very comfy beds, the gas fireplace, Hawaiian music playing on the TV, and the soft nightly rains added to the relaxing atmosphere. Richard was a great host and we invited him to visit with us one evening while working a jigsaw puzzle. He's very knowledgeable about Hawaii and offered several suggestions about places to visit. It was fun to hear about the history of the home and the details of some of the decor. An added plus is that he has a beautiful kitty, which helped me not miss my own pets so much. The abundance of fruit, waffle mix and coffee that Richard provided allowed us to start our days with good breakfasts for our long days of exploration. I hope the next time I'm on the Big Island, the cottage will be available, as I'd definitely stay there again. Mahalo, Richard.
“Wonderful stay in a beautiful house”
Hi Richard, Thanks for a great stay in your lovely volcano house. We had a great time, the kids loved it (especially the waffle maker, the games/puzzles and netflix), the house was very comfortable and beautiful, and we were very happy that we could extend our stay last minute with another night! Thanks for everything! Regards, Jeanet
Response from the owner Aloha Jeanet and family, I am very glad and thankful that you found and chose to stay at my cottage in Volcano during your family adventure from Australia. To have children and families visit and spend happy times together is the height of purpose for an old rain forest cottage such as mine. You were wonderful guests. I am also glad that waffles were appreciated by your family. They are such an easy thing for a vacation rental to offer guests and time after time folks enjoy them (as I do) as the perfect way to begin a Volcano day. I am also thrilled that your son and husband enjoyed the "Frogs" jigsaw puzzle. The jigsaw puzzles are a new addition to the cottage and it is great to see people enjoy them. Should you pass tis way ever again the cottage will always have a free complimentary night to offer you. Aloha and with best wishes and regards to you all. Richard
“The cottage was beautiful!”
Richard's cottage was not only beautiful but the location was so peacful. If you have never experience living in a rain forest you have to stay at this cottage. The cottage is decorated with so many interesting items on display. Believe me you will fall asleep so quickly listening to the quiet rain fall while tucked in wonderful warm beds. Cannot wait until my next trip to the Volcano Cottage!
Response from the owner Aloha Linda and Penny, You were both wonderful guests and I feel very honored and blessed. Thanks for having Luli and myself over for an evening by the fire "visit" during your stay. Watching you two dear old friends work on the new Jigsaw puzzle together while laughing, eating popcorn and humorously bantering in front of the fire was truly heartwarming for me to be around. Thank you also for the Easter Sunday brunch at Kilauea Military Camp. You are both very fun and fine people and I thank you for choosing my little cottage for your adventure in Hawaii. You enriched my life. Aloha and with my very best and kindest wishes. Richard
“Wonderful place! great host!”
We love this place from first minute we saw it. Everything here exceeds our expectation. Particularly, Oliver loved to make the waffle breakfast and he bought a waffle maker after we were back home. He also like the 3 old photos: an old man with the cat, an old lady with the cat and both of them with cat. :) Grace loves all the decorations here. She believes VolcanoHouse is an art gallery and Richard is trully an artist. She wishes her house in the future would have the similar style. David enjoyed Pockeymon so much. As a good side effect, he completed all his meals much faster than usual. such a great experience. Thank you, Richard. You and your house are the best!
Response from the owner Aloha Claire, Grace, Oliver and young David. Thank you so very much for taking your time to be generous to me by leaving such a kind review of my Volcano Village cottage. I know folks get busy after their vacations and can not always find such time. So it is always special for me to hear from folks that they were indeed happy and well looked after during their visit to my cottage. I have, and am also learning that being a good host for folks such as your selves who are traveling and away from their own homes is a fine art of sorts and certainly genuine and fun pleasure. There is something about this role of being a host that I truly enjoy. I am also thrilled that Oliver became a fan and purveyor of his families morning waffles! Few great fresh baked foods are easier to prepare than waffles. Also Volcano is the perfect place to have a waffle in. It is a match made in Heaven. A waffle chef ... even a new one can look like an experienced culinary genius to his family and the world in about four minutes flat using just basic flour and water. As you can tell I am a big waffle fan myself. The best things in life are free or very close to free. Waffles are top on that list. I can now imagine Oliver feeding his family delicious home made waffles back in Canada on his very own waffle maker. Thank you all so much for choosing to stay with us during your family vacation. Please know that there is always a Free Complimentary night at the cottage for your family should you pass this way again. Many thanks and a fond Aloha to your young happy, gracious and fine Family! Richard
“Great place, great host!”
Our enjoyment of our trip to the Big Island started before we left due to our host, Richard. He sent us a full package of brochures, maps and more so we could really get an idea of what we wanted to do while we were there and even provided links to websites. We arrived at the end of a quiet street to find Richard waiting for us with the cottage fully prepared; fire burning, huge fruit basket, robes, house socks and slippers, and Pandora playing on the internet TV. We felt truly pampered in our three night stay. One morning we even woke to find cinnamon rolls waiting for us on the porch. Volcano House is cozy and comfortable. Every detail you could think of is there from small motion sensor lights if you need to get up during the night to plush towels, dimmer controlled lights, and a well equipped kitchen. The perfect place to start and end your day as you explore Volcanoes National Park or other areas up and down the Hilo coast. When we weren't out exploring we found ourselves relaxing with our feet up, fire burning, and internet radio or a Netflix movie playing. And then there were the waffles - Richard provides mix, waffle maker, syrup, and then some of that fruit from the fruit basket. This is a rainforest environment and we were blessed to have days of sunshine too. It was also so refreshing to have the price be the price - no extras for tax or cleaning fees etc., it's all included in the price Richard gives you. We have already told friends about Vlocano House. Note: this is not the Volcano House Hotel that is inside the park.
Response from the owner Thank you both so very much for being such wonderful and kind guests at the Volcano cottage. I appreciate very much also your taking your precious time to leave a positive review. This s so helpful for future potential guests to make their vacation accommodation plans. I do wish that the internet offered proprietors such as myself the ability to leave kind reviews about my guests as well. This door of appreciation, I know swings both ways. Just as all Vacation rentals are not created quite equal, neither are All Guests created quite equal as well. I and the cottage are well aware of the great quality and kindness of the guests that come to visit my little cottage in Volcano during their vacations. I have been very fortunate to have folks such as yourselves find your way to the cottage front door. I hope my good luck in this regard holds well into the future. It is a genuine heartfelt pleasure to be able to say: " Thank you very much for choosing my cottage from all the available choices for your special time together on your trip." Without getting too corny or sentimental : "Your satisfaction and happiness is my satisfaction and happiness" You were and are a very positive, kind and generous couple. Always remember that you have a Free Complimentary night waiting for you here any time Aloha and with many thanks and my best regards, Richard
“Our Big Island mountain retreat”
Our goal was finding a place near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and we chose a winner. Richard took a personal interest in making sure we had a fine visit to his part of the Big Island. He helped with planning, made special arrangements in the house, made itinerary suggestions from personal experience and guided us to an excellent Thai food truck. The house worked very well for our group of four adults. It's decorated at every turn, and we had fun just studying what Richard used for decorations and accents. It is ideally located for exploring the national park, which is a real treat.
Response from the owner Aloha Lois and Tom, Thank you for being such wonderful, sincere and "down home" guests. It was great to serve as a meeting place and rendezvous for your family get together. Thank you also for the appreciated gentle nudge to open the second bedroom in the cottage, much appreciated and a smart thing to do. You were a great and happy presence from the Great (albeit cold) State of Tennessee. Thank you also for taking such nice care of the cottage while you were here. Please remember that there is always a Complimentary Free night at the cottage offered to you anytime you pass this way again. Aloha with my best regards and sincere thanks, Richard
Stayed at this quaint cottage Feb 11-12. The home is inviting and comforting , like a warm blanket that envelopes you. The cottage had everything we needed. The back deck was a serene place to have waffles and coffee in the morning. The grounds are private and have beautiful flowers. The interior is eclectic with beautiful antiques The king bed was very comfortable.Richard was always accessible, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He provides plenty of information on the big island. I would stay here again and highly recommend it for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle. It was refreshing to get away from the impersonal big hotels. We will miss the "old girl" and miss lu lu
Response from the owner Aloha Karen and Nick, Again I feel blessed to get such nice folks visiting the Volcano cottage. The "Old Girl" loves to entertain and and play hostess for folks. It is a great thing to see this old house rise from her dormant period years and again welcome and shelter folks such as yourselves on their travels. Of course you are extended the Aloha afforded return guests of a Complimentary Free night at the cottage should you visit the Big Island again. A warm bed, cozy fire and warm welcome is here for you at any given time. I do hope next time your visit to the islands affords you a bit more leisure time before heading back to the Great but Cold North Country to the East. Aloha and with my sincere thanks and best regards to both yourself and Nick. Richard .
