“The house is great, but was far from clean when we arrived”

Reviewed 20 Mar 2015

This is a really neat house with a fantastic view. Had it been cleaned sufficiently when we arrived, and a little more well stocked, it would have been a much happier group of people. We did have a good time and made the best of our trip, but this place definitely has issues. The oven was disgusting and my aunt spent close to two hours cleaning it before we would use it. The microwave was splattered and covered in food and had to be cleaned. The master bedroom was so dusty you could write your name on the furniture and could have filled a cup it was piled so high. There were beer bottles under one bathroom sink. The washer was full of washed towels that had never been put in the dryer and it stunk and had to be bleached. There was a leak in the master bath that had obviously been there a while because the grout was stained. No dressers in all but I believe one bedroom, so there was nowhere to put your clothes or hang them in most of the rooms. The only table there to eat at wobbled and we actually bought washers to fix it. The sheets on most of the beds did not fit properly. There was a small shed by the pool that was full of bags of trash left from prior renters. The indoor grill on the kitchen stove would not heat up to grill steaks and the outdoor grill was so filthy it was out of the question...so we cooked steaks in the oven. There were no wine glasses at all so we had to buy some. Had to buy bath mats for the bathrooms or use towels. I honesty wonder if the place was cleaned prior to our stay and I'm sure they charged the college kids a cleaning fee for the next renters...us. The post from last year that says this is the most well - stocked rental they had ever seen makes me wonder if we are talking about the same place. This was the most horribly stocked rental I have ever seen, with mismatched everything. We were told we did not need 4WD, but you really should have it in case it rains. We did get pretty good wi-fi. If you like ladybugs, this is the place for you; there were hundreds of them in the house. It is my understanding that the house is booked for the next few months pretty steady...I hope that this post keeps others from having the same experience we had at what truly is a fantastic castle. They have a lot to do to get ready for summer with the pool.l

Response from the owner I understand about what you are talking about and the people that were supposed to be keeping the place up and cleaned are no longer there we have a couple that is handling the cleaning and they have been doing great so far also we have had the pool redone and they have everything to keep it up to people satisfaction we would love to have you back next yr if possible and will be willinfg to give a discount if you do decide to return if so please call robert eight two eight three fourseven sixtwo three two and see what we can do thank you and happy new yr

“Breathtaking - worth every penny and more.”

We really were a bit hesitant to rent this because it really seemed too good to be true. When we got there, we were honestly amazed. It’s stunningly gorgeous and the pictures on this site do NOT do it justice. It was stocked with more essentials than any rental house I’ve ever seen (even staples like ketchup and mustard were in there, as well as laundry detergent, dish detergent, etc). More than enough towels and toilet paper. The floors are stunning and a gleaming cherry wood. And it’s loaded with the most comfortable furniture I think I’ve ever sat on. It’s in a small little town but not far from attractions. We went tubing in nearby Bryson City, but my husband had to drag me out there because I genuinely didn’t want to leave the mountain. The pool is really large for a private pool and the views are breathtaking. We took pictures daily and even though it looked the same, it somehow got more beautiful as the days went on. Our family of four met up with our friends, also a family of four, and had a wonderful time and truly relaxed. There’s cell signal (it’s best by the pool and gets better on clearer days), and we used both 3G and 4G while we were up there. The laundry is really easily accessible and made coming home much better because there was no laundry to do. There is not a neighbor to be seen and it was wonderful. We hated to leave and most certainly intend on making this our annual trip from now on – you can keep the beach, this was MUCH better!! The “downsides” weren’t really downsides after we got used to them. The layout is kind of odd at first, but it makes it PERFECT for two families or extended families (two of the bedrooms are close together but quite removed from the master, which was perfect for our friends and their kids). The master bedroom is enormous and there is a ton of storage throughout the entire house, so your luggage isn’t laying around. The drive up the mountain is a bit unnerving at first, but we did fine in our SUV, and our friends made it up there perfectly in a 5-speed VW Jetta, which tells me that any car can get up there. Definitely follow the owner's instructions, Google did not win this war. In trying to think of what I ended up needing that I hadn’t thought to bring, there really wasn’t anything. The house is more than stocked with every appliance you could need (and a gas stove which I fell in love with). There are some extras in case you forgot some maintenance things (a few small bottles of shampoo, etc), but definitely still bring your own. It was nice to see that the house wasn’t stripped bare like most are. We also had all the pots and pans we needed. You can tell that the house is a work in progress (in that some parts look more updated than others, but even the parts that aren’t updated are in excellent shape) and the owners are doing a wonderful job, and for what you’re paying for, you truly cannot beat it. I couldn’t begin to put a price on not having to listen to other people’s kids screaming or splashing at the pool, having to use a wet and smelly elevator to get to a pool, or dealing with the noise and people at the beach. We are trying to nail down a week for next year already, and at least one of my Facebook friends is intending on booking just from what I was posting as well!
