“Everything you could wish for in a holiday rental”

Reviewed 14 Oct 2014

“This is a truly beautiful place. From the start Helena and Roberto made us feel very welcome. We stayed two nights in Magnolia which has a beautiful outside sitting area. The apartment itself has everything you need. We spent 5 nights in Orchid which is amazing in every way. If we go back to Funchal we will not stay anywhere else. The gardens and outside area are so beautifully maintained. It is in a great location far from the madding crowd but close enough to the old and best part of Funchal. We loved all the fruit trees in the garden and Roberto kindly gave us mangoes from one of the trees a couple of times. We also loved "Amigo" the yet to be named dog that Roberto had rescued from the mountain a few weeks previously. The photos of the dog at the time of rescue and the difference in him after only a couple of weeks was great to witness. The is nothing I can say about the beauty of the Orchid apartment that hasn't already been said by other reviewers. The photos do not do it justice. We were very sad to leave the place as it was one of the most peaceful holidays we enjoyed. Helena and Roberto even surprised us with a gift of Madeira as we were leaving. Thank you for being fantastic hosts and I hope we will get back to your Quinta one day soon.”

Response from the manager Dear Rebecca, Thank you for all you kind words and good description about our place. Sincerely hope your "come back day" will be really soon and meanwhile wish you all the best. From your friends in MAdeira, Helena and Roberto.

“Madeiran Paradise”

Just returned from our third stay at Quinta Esperanca and again did not want to come home! This time we brought the parents. We wanted them to share the wonderful atmosphere of this lovely place. Helena and Roberto are such thoughtful, helpful and friendly hosts, arranging a taxi to collect us from the airport and leaving much welcomed provisions for lunch. There are now 4 apartments, we occupied all 3 on the ground floor, each having a large terrace area, table and chairs and of course not forgetting the lovely views of the gardens and sea. Each apartment is very well equipped and tastefully decorated. There are bbq's to use, washing machine, iron, everything you can think of. The gardens and pool area are attractive, peaceful and tranquil, you can always find a quiet corner to chill out. The upstairs terrace is fantastic with breathtaking views of Funchal, a lovely place to have an evening drink. It is about a 15 minute walk steep, downhill walk to town, but there is a convenient bus stop just outside the gate, which is inexpensive {bus 31 or 31a}. We like to eat in the old town where there are many good restaurants, most of which offer value set menus. Once again we used a local taxi to take us out on a couple of excursions, which is very good value and more informative and tailored to what you want to see and do. We all had a wonderful holiday. Thank you Helena and Roberto once again. You are doing a fantastic job on sympathetically renovating the beautiful building. We cannot wait to return to what we call our "piece of paradise"!

“Wonderful, lovely place”

The Quinta EsperanÇA is an absolutely wonderful place, with a big garden and a fantastic view over Funchal.

“Beautiful, relaxing view from the Orchid apt terrace”

Reviewed 10 Dec 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Helene and Roberto's place. They were very gracious hosts and the room was exactly as described on their website. The view from the terrace is breathtaking! It was a brief but steep walk down to the old part of Funchal, but worth the effort for a nice dinner after exploring the Island. A perfect stay if you prefer some privacy.

“A lovely peaceful place to stay with a great view”

We stayed in the Orchid apartment during November. We had a really great and relaxing time there. From the apartment it is a nice 15 minute walk into town (although quite steep for the first part). There is an excellent bakery near by, and the apartment has a lovely view over Funchal town and harbour. Helena and Roberto were very friendly and helpful, and made sure we had everything we needed. We are looking forward to coming back again.

“I could live here!”

This is a traditional building with many original features and is in the process of sympathetic and complimentary restorations. That said our stay was never compromised by any such activity. My wife and I spent two blissful weeks in the spacious and adequately equipped Orchid apartment on the top floor. We also enjoyed the privacy of the whole "communal" terrace to ourselves, as well as our own private balcony. If there was one negative, I would point out that access to this apartment is by an iron external spiral staircase. A little daunting at first sight, but we soon adapted and the amazing vista over Funchal harbour more than redressed the issue. The terrace is quoted as communal, but as Orchid apartment is the only accommodation on the top floor it also makes it very private. We believed the staircase was somewhat of a barrier as only one couple from the ground floor made a brief excursion to the top during the whole two weeks of our stay. No complaints here though, it's just how we like it!! The pool is clean and adequate for a cooling swim between tanning sessions. I rated Cleanliness as average only because we missed Helena on the linen exchange day and had to change the bed linen our selves. Not a problem though. The room was a little dusty from time to time due mainly to us having both sets of patio doors open whenever we were around. Really easy walk into the old town and on into the shopping areas. Buses are frequent, cheap and noisy but they meet the need. Taxis are everywhere, always offering their service, which I have to say is not unreasonable or invasive, and most speak very good English. If you're not keen on walking you won't like the walk back up to Quinta Esperanca, but please don't be deterred, let the buses and taxis take the strain, they're not expensive, and after all you are on holiday...and you will have a wonderful time!! Go and enjoy!!

“Marvellous 2 weeks in Funchal”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2012

When I booked Quinta Esperança, I thought it might be a fraud as it was too good to be true, a place too beautiful to be real... When we arrived, we realized at once that we didn´t have to worry. Our expectations, we have got from the pictures on the internet were even surpassed. Quinta Eperança was an exceptional place to spend our Summer holidays at. As swimming in the atlantic wasn´t always possible, we enjoyed the pool every day. Helena and Roberto were very friendly and courteous hosts, with an excellent taste for the interior design of the apartments at the Quinta. We liked to relax here a lot. And this was possible, easily ignoring the noise which happened to come from road works this September.. Nothing couldn´t disturb the beauty of the garden and the upstair terrace overlooking Funchal. It feels a bit sad that we have to leave but we hope to come back soon.

“Top location in private atmosphere”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2012

It was by all means an extremely lucky hit to find this lovely place for spending all 9 days of our first time visit in Madeira. We stayed in the cozy apartment "Magnolia" which is conveniently and most tastefully decorated. The spacious terrace right in front of it invited us to have either a rest or to enjoy breakfast with a marvelous view to the sea and city of Funchal. Freshly picked fruits from the trees in the neatly kept garden enriched many of our breakfast with some delicious tropical flavours. Coming back after long Levada Walks or tiring excursions, the ample pool gave us the luxury to calm down and to relax in style. Having and enjoying the all time available access to the top floor veranda even for ground floor guests of this outstanding Quinta with a great historic background is the absolute highlight of this place!! Comfortably furnished with canvas chairs and sofas, the gorgeous and breathtaking view over the harbor and the old Townof Funchal is really "The place" to relax and to savour holidays at its best. Last but not least there are the hosts, Helena and Roberto with their most kind and open hearted manner which made our stay in Quinta Esperança a very special and certainly unforgettable week in a uniquely private atmosphere. Sincerely yours, Robert + Helene Wirthlin / Switzerland

“Lovely place”

The Quinta Esperança is probably the most tranquiel place I have ever visited. We loved the gardens, the birds, the views.. ... Funchal is very fortunate that this wonderful place came into the hands of people with such respect for tradition and aesthetic considerations, rather than purely making money. We look forward to returning, to see how you progress in taking this lovely place back to its former glory. Many times I have set on the terrace and wondered what poets, artists, musicians, etc, of the past came and went. The list would probably be more interesting than in Reids. Much love Helena and Roberto from your new friends, Neil and Denise.
