“AMAZING House in beautiful setting.”
This was the perfect landing spot on the Hilo side of the island. Beautiful home and pool with everything you could ask for. The house had every option imaginable in a tropical paradise setting. Cannot wait to return.
Response from the owner I am so glad that you enjoyed our vacation home!
“Real Gem !”
What a great experience for our first vacation in Hawaii! From the gated entrance, through the house to the pool in the back everything was wonderful. This spacious, well cared for home and beauty of the garden and pool made us feel so lucky to have found this gem. The attention to detail, good quality of things in the house, the well equipped kitchen enhanced the beauty of the house, garden and pool. Melanie and Todd you really know how to treat your guests so expect to hear from us again and be sure we will highly recommend your beautiful home to friends and family!
“"Home" in Hawaii”
I was absolutely delighted from the moment I stepped onto the property. There's a gate at the entrance, before a gravel driveway, to the house. Major bonus points for that security feature, even though it's a lovely, safe neighborhood (my dearest friends live there and can attest to that fact). It was easy to see the grounds were well cared for, and the house was no different. Living in the tropics, so close to the ocean, it's a lot of work to keep a house in good condition and yet, this one is pristine. The pictures are current, representing the house as is -- beautiful and clean! Nearly every detail was taken into account. Melanie leaves a guest binder near the front door that gives thoughtful, clear instructions on various aspects of the home that may be helpful during the visit. It's written in a kind, easy manner that immediately made me feel welcome. Everything I needed for an extended stay was available: washer/dryer, towels (including beach towels), dishwasher, a fully stocked kitchen (equipment, not food ha!), even blankets (it gets a tiny bit chilly at night), and...can't forget...the pool! Wow, it was gorgeous, in a private, lush setting (I have to comment again on how well maintained this was, too). The only (tiny) downside is that the deck is slippery, so keep your flip flops nearby as you're getting in/out of the pool and walk carefully. But since we were in Hawaii, with nothing but time, nowhere to be, and no rushing, we took our time strolling back to our chairs. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Melanie over the course of a year, she was nothing if not extremely gracious and responsive. Hilo is my favorite place, besides home, in the world and I was grateful that Melanie and Todd's gave me the feeling and comforts of being home. I'm already looking forward to going back! I highly recommend it! Mahalo Melanie! ah hui hou
“Beautiful house with secluded, private pool.”
We rented this spacious vacation house for a week in apr/May 2013. Both the house and the grounds are beautiful. There were fresh flowers throughout the house when we arrived. The pool is big, completely private, and surrounded by vegetation. We swam in the pool every day, which was a great break from the humidity. It was wonderful to swim under the stars! The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are wonderful. The master has a jetted tub and a large walk-in shower that's beautiful. The kitchen is fully stocked, including some condiments. There are many beach towels. The washer and dryer were wonderful to have. You won't have to pack as many clothes, because you can wash them there at your convenience. The house has ceiling fans throughout, which help keep the heat out. The house is secured behind a gate, and the doors are locked by code (a smart home). We really liked this setup because we never had to carry keys with us. The house is very close to Hilo. We recommend the Hilo farmer's market for fresh fruit that's really cheap. There are wonderful Hawaiian artists who sell from shops along the bay front near the farmer's market; those are perfect souvenirs (we bought hand-painted purses there). We received our full deposit back the week that we returned (very speedy!). Overall, it was a perfect vacation house for us, and we give it five stars.
“Fantastic Vacation Home”
Outstanding home in a great location to use as a hub to visit Volcano Park, Mauna Kea and downtown Hilo. The owners were very responsive and accommodating. The advertisement is exactly what you get, we'll maintained and evident that the homeowners want you to enjoy your stay. This is the second time we have rented this property and we will do so again during our next trip to the Big Island.
“Paradise in Paradise”
What a great experience for our family! A wonderful well cared for home with plenty of room for three kids to get some space after a long day looking at the great sights the Big Island has to offer. I can tell Melanie is a sweetheart even though we only conversed via email. Prompt with replys to any questions and makes sure everything is just right for your arrival. The pool is outstanding and the neighbors are very friendly, great place from which to explore Mauna Kea, Kilauea Crater, Black Sand beaches, abundant waterfalls and The Hilo Farmers market. We live on Oahu so the whole Hawaii scene is nothing new but we had a simply awesome time and Melanie and Todd allowing us to stay in this beautiful home just added to it. Thanks again Melanie!
“Beautiful, roomy and private”
I highly recommend this property and the owners. Both are wonderful. We stayed for one week and had a great time. Everything we could have needed was included. We were a party of three and rented both the upstairs and down. We only used the top part but that was more than enough. Mike from Seattle
“Great lanai and near some beautiful seacliffs!”
This beautiful home was a great place to stay for our week on the Big Island. We were able to drive into Hilo, Keaau and Mountain View to see family, tour the volcano side, and come home to a spacious, well-equipped kitchen and large, well-appointed bed and bathroom spaces. We appreciated the wireless and really enjoyed use of the lanai (after visiting the local sunshine markets) for as many meals as we could. On our lazier mornings, we also went out jogging/walking on local roads, and fished off the dramatic cliffs nearby. The house is definitely out a ways in a residential neighborhood, not in town proper, though you quickly learn to accommodate for travel time. Because there are no real landmarks in the dark, finding the house for the first time was a bit of a challenge, since we first arrived well after dark. The map sent by the owners (and Google Maps) was a big help. We also discovered that a pregnant member of our party consistently got queasy on the long, rolling road out to the neighborhood (though that's clearly not a fault of the house or owner). With relatives living to the south and north, this was otherwise a convenient spot for us, and we would definitely be willing to return to this place. Contract arrangement was easy and straightforward, even though done interstate. Thanks, again to the owners!
Quiet location close to beautiful hikes along the ocean cliffs. I had my family stay here when they came out for Christmas. Two extra large bedrooms, and a detached unit downstairs that is like having your own apartment. There waas one hike we really enjoyed, at the bottom, of Kaloli where it dead ends if you take a left instead of going right to the rental, go to the end of the road and park. You hike past the big boulders and stay on the far left trail, the ones to the right will prematurely take you to the ocean. It is a 2-1/2 mile hike through tropical rain forest until you hit a private beach in front of the shipman house. Wonderful white and black sand beach with turtles. Don't forget a snack, water, and good shoes it is a health distance almost 5 miles round trip. My only suggestion for this clean beautiful house would be to have a TV in the detached downstairs aparment. Not only was the house wonderful, but so were the owners. We thourghly clean the house upon leaving, and they promplty got in touch and returned our cleaning deposit. Aloha!
Response from the owner Thanks and I am glad your family enjoyed their stay! We will add a TV downstairs starting the first part on Feb.
“best base place to stay in order to view the whole island.”
Melanie, Thank you so much for letting us stay at your place! The house had more than enough room for the 6 of us. Everything looked totally new, was very clean, and the beds and couches were so comfortable. We've stayed in other places on Kauai, Maui and Oahu where it was not as clean and with bugs so we were so happy. Because of your emails (thank you for being so responsive, by the way), it was super easy to check in and out. We cooked breakfast everyday in your kitchen, we used your cooler to keep our bag lunches fresh while we went on day trips, we used our 6 laptops all over the house (we are internet and camera geeks), we brought your extra beach towels and Big Island Revealed Book with us everywhere. I thought it was a perfect place to stay and I miss it. We felt safe there in the neighborhood and some of us jogged in the mornings. It did rain but it was so short and at night. It never interrupted any of our plans. We went to all sides of the islands except for the very South Point and everything was driveable in a day - 2 hours being the longest drive to Kona. I would definitely recommend this place to my family and friends. Mahalo! Maria
