“Lovely home cooking courses”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2012

My wife and I came to Chianti for our honeymoon, and spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening doing a cookery course with Ulrike. The meals were traditional Tuscan fare and delicious, whilst easy enough to follow so that we will have confidence to do them again. It also made a big difference that the cooking was very hands on - Ulrike encouraged us to get stuck in and enjoy ourselves. All in all - good company and good value, recommended.

“This is a delightful country respite for travelers who want off”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2012

We stayed with Ulrike during May of 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Chianti countryside is beautiful, the small towns (Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena and Castellina in Chianti, our favorite) which are accessible by car were lovely, and Poderi Val Verdi was peaceful and serene. The best part of our stay was, of course, Ulrike. We had amazing dinners at her house and spent an afternoon with her wandering Castellina and meeting the locals. Our apartment which was part of a larger house on the property, had a modern bath, a comfortable bed, fireplace, a kitchen opening onto a terrace that overlooked the terrace below, a pool, and the hills where the sheep grazed in the morning. We had morning coffee and croissants and drank wine on our terrace in the early evening, did a little hiking (walking actually) on the hills surrounding the farm, and visited with other couples who were guests at the same time. This isn't a 5 Star accommodation. But it is charming, comfortable, and authentic. I actually did laundry and hung it on the line one morning (and then photographed it). We get a little tired of standing in line at museums and checking off the sites (though we certainly did a bit of that in Florence and Venice), and the four days in the countryside between those busy tourist locales were exactly what we needed to feel close to the country and the people, and to make wonderful new friends like Ulrike, which is the main reason we travel.

“Hightlight of Our Vacation”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2012

We visited Poderi Val Verde for a cooking class with Urlike, the owner. The property is beautiful, a set of villa-apartments in the Tuscan hills a couple of minutes from Castellina in Chianti. Adding to the accommodations and view is the cooking class and other services that Poderi offers, such as a welcome meal and hiking trips. Urlike taught us and another couple how to cook five traditional, delicious Tuscan dishes made with fresh local ingredients, which we ate with some amazing local wine under a Tuscan sunset. The class was held in her kitchen, which was the picture of Tuscan beauty. She was so fun and personable, we felt at home, a nice change of pace from the hotels and eating out. It was a great time and the highlight of our vacation.
