Description from owner

Description

This cozy, private retreat is a nature-lovers paradise! This three bedroom home is the main level of our bed and breakfast--Bear Inn the Woods--that we rent out to folks who need more space than a room or two and would like the entire area for their own private use. Nestled among the trees, just minutes from the Kayuta Lake boat launch, this roomy rental gives you space to spread out. The three bedrooms will sleep up to six and the sofa bed provides sleeping space for another two. The gathering room offers a wood fireplace, when needed, entertainment center, large HD TV, books, magazines, and games to share. The large, fully-equipped kitchen allows you to fix your own meals, or, if you'd like to eat out, there are many nearby restaurants, cafes, diners, and fast food spots. Surrounded by windows, you have a sense of being outside while enjoying the comforts of being inside. A washer/dryer, computer and wi-fi are available for guest use. The park-like backyard provides space for lounging, using the BBQ, playing games, building a campfire, or sliding on the hills in the winter. While here, you can put your feet up and completely relax OR use as a base to explore all the region has to offer--unlimited access to sports in all seasons, historical sites, state parks, tourist areas, and urban offerings--all within a half hour. Within an hour you can find such popular spots as Water Safari Park, Turning Stone Casino, Herkimer Diamond Mines, boat cruises on the chain of lakes or Mohawk River, Fort Stanwyx, Whetstone Gulf State Park, Hinckley Beach and Reservoir, etc.

We have two overly-friendly dogs. We keep them away from guests unless guests WISH to visit with them. It's NOT a spot for those with an allergy to dogs, however. Well-behaved pets are ALWAYS welcome with their owners.

For the active guest, we offer bikes to pedal on country roads and a canoe and kayak for paddling nearby waters. Tennis courts and golf courses are minutes away. Hiking or mountain biking or x-country skiing or snowshoeing are ideal activities for the BREIA trail system, with a trailhead just five min. from the house. A toboggan and snow tubes are offered in the winter for the hills right in our own backyard. There are three downhill ski areas less than an hour away. Snowmobilers can access major groomed trails rights from the backyard and head out in all directions. There is plenty of space in our driveway for parking vehicles and trailers.

Not so active? Curl up with a good book by the fireplace in winter. In other seasons, enjoy the backyard--relax in the chairs or glider, marvel at the variety of birds visiting the feeder, catch some of the wildlife that strolls thru the area, listen to the frogs in the pond...

Don't need so much space? We'll be glad to rent a room or two within the bed and breakfast and THOSE rentals always include the full country breakfast for which we've become famous! Please call for rates/availability. Our calendar is marked only for the main, larger rental.

We have two overly-friendly dogs. We keep them away from guests unless guests WISH to visit with them. It's NOT a spot for those with an allergy to dogs, however. Well-behaved pets are ALWAYS welcome with their owners.

Come and experience our motto for yourself: Let us pamper you in the foothills of the Adirondacks!

“Cozy b&b with warm and welcoming hosts.”

Reviewed 19 Feb 2015

I stayed at Bear Inn the Woods in January with my daughter. I am from the area but live in Florida and wanted my 4 yr old to experience the snow and scenery. Lynne made wonderful breakfasts and was very welcoming and kid friendly.

“Absolutely wonderful!!”

Reviewed 2 Feb 2015

My husband Mark & I recently stayed for 2 very comfortable nights. We found this B & B extremely accommodating and Lynne & Carl wonderfully warm (as well as their 2 sweet puppies). Breakfast was deliciously over the top, if you leave hungry, it would be your own fault! If you enjoy snowmobiling, this is paradise! The main trail is less than 1/4 mile down the road to some of the best conditions around. There is plenty of parking for your vehicles & trailers and you can ride your sled right up to the front door! We highly recommend a stay here and we will certainly return with our friends! I was there with my wife and son and found it be very clean. The food was very good. We enjoyed the conversation with Lynne and Carl and the cohost Vicky. There were other guest there that we also enjoyed interacting with. All around enjoyed our visit and will go back for sure.

“Relaxing”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2014

I am so glad that you, Lynne and Carl, 2 seniors, were there for us, 2 seniors. We loved seeing the deer in the backyard. The food was absolutely wonderful! We have been guests at Bear Inn the Woods for over 12 years-- before it was even located in Remsen. We return at least twice a year-- because we can relax here and are very comfortable.

“Wonderful people with a nice comfy place to rest and relax”

I felt very at home here. The food was delicious and the place was very nice. Couldn't have had a better time and the price was very good too.

“Very Comfortable--Perfect for my needs! Loved it!”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2014

I stayed twice at Lynn and Carl's--once on my way to Canada and I enjoyed it so much I chose to stay upon my return trip. I was travelling with my two very well trained doggies, and this place is a gem. I"m sure I'll return every year as this is an annual trip for me and their location is fabulous. They were very welcoming as a pet friendly B & B, and their yard is spacious, abuts woods, and the dogs had a blast. I stayed in two different rooms, both were very clean. The beds were queen sized, and very comfortable and cozy. The shared baths were also very clean with nice toiletries provided. First night Lynn cooked dinner for me as I'd done a ton of driving and she will provide dinner for a modest fee if notified ahead of time. It was an excellent chicken stir fry. Soooo relaxing and I enjoyed conversing with Lynn and Carl. The breakfasts are hearty and as Lynn says, "No one needs lunch afterwards!" It was a great way to start the day--asparagus quiche one morning, and delicious poached eggs over toast with spinach and a lovely sauce the second morning. There is always fruit, and sweet breads/coffee cakes. Lynn is very accommodating to your times, as well...I needed to leave early and she whipped up these meals with ease, even when the other guests were having breakfast later. Also the coffee was really good (and I'm picky!) It's a nice, family style atmosphere. I met one of the other guests and I enjoyed the comaraderie. Lynn and Carl are friendly without being intrusive, and I found them to be gracious hosts. If you're seeking a five star pristine place--more like a hotel--with no other guests around, etc., this isn't the place for you. If you enjoy a family atmosphere, with hosts who obviously love their home and hosting others, this is a gem--a real down home B & B.

Great food, good balcony. Hosts were friendly and made us feel welcome. Good location at the Adirondack Gateway.

“Dog poop everywhere in the yard, smells of mold and mildew indoors, and doors that don't properly shut.”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2014

This was probably the scariest place I've ever stayed in my life. You stay in the basement of a one story house in which the entrance to the lower level is in the back. When we pulled up to the house we immediately had to dodge dog crap all over the yard. There was a guy drinking a tall boy in the community room that explained to us that there were a few others staying on the property and not to be startled if we see someone in here during the night. We noticed the smell of mildew and dog urine in our room. The sheets were rather tattered and should be replaced. The reviews on this site must be a mistake. Stay away!

Response from the owner I'm surely sorry this guest had such a negative experience and wish he had spoken about it while here so his concerns could have been addressed immediately. We make it clear that we rent a basement apartment, easily accessed by driving down a path leading directly to the back door. It is comfortably cool in the hot, humid summer weather and warm and cozy when winter arrives. Yes, there are often other guests coming and going in the community room. That is how a B&B operates and interaction with others is a main reason folks choose a B&B. We have never had a problem with guests being inconsiderate of one another. Our bedding is clean, neat, and replaced often. When this guest was here, I was out-of-state--leaving the B&B in the very capable hands of our assistant hostess--who has had many complimentary statements made in our guest books about her interaction with guests. During this same time period, my husband had a medical emergency, which was the reason for the yard not being properly picked up after the dogs. For this, we truly apologize. Our 2 overly-friendly dogs are kept in an area away from guests unless the guests WISH to visit with them. The door had just broken, our contractor couldn't repair it, and it's being replaced this week. It could ALWAYS be shut--just needed the lever lifted upwards when entering or leaving. I guess potential guests will just have to check all the many other positive reviews we've had over the years and realize we have had MANY very satisfied, and often returning, customers.

When I arrive it was raining and damp. They had a wood burning stove going and before long I was toasty warm. Meals are wholesome and delicious. If you go away hungry it's your own fault. Lynne and Carl are very gracious hosts. They make you feel right at home. I plan on going back again and again.
