Description from owner

Description

This luxurious, comfortable, spacious modern villa, designed by a student of the famous architect Geoffrey Bawa is set in a secluded lush tropical garden with a private swimming pool in a quiet residential area in the village of Unawatuna. The villa has been designed with "keeping cool" in mind in this hot climate. The high ceilings and many french doors from all rooms ensure a constant cooling air flow throughout the villa.

The villa is tastefully decorated with a mix of Sri Lankan antiques and modern furniture. All bedrooms are en-suite with hot water showers, have comfortable beds with mosquito nets and good quality bed linen. There are 2 bedrooms with double beds and one bedroom with two single beds. All rooms have Air Conditioning and fans. There is also a cot and highchair available.

Being one of the most biodiverse countries in the world the garden contains amazing palm, mango, papaya, araliya, avacado trees and boasts many different types of heliconias. The garden is frequently visited by interesting wildlife such as monkeys, different types of lizards, squirrels and many species of birds such as parakeets, paradise flycatchers, humming birds, kingfishers and the odd peacock.

The villa is approximately 3 minutes walk from the beautiful beach of Unawatuna which is safe for swimming or a 5 minute tuk tuk ride away from the quiet beaches of Dalawella and Talpe. Check with the locals to see where it is safe to swim at these beaches.

A significant place of interest nearby includes the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle which is 4km away from Shalini Villa. If you wish to go further afield (45 mins drive via new highway) and are a garden lover you may enjoy visiting Geoffrey Bawa's house and garden "Lunuganga" or his brother's house and garden - "Brief Garden".

Other enjoyable things you may like to do are body surfing or whale/dolphin watching at Mirissa beach, releasing a baby turtle into the indian ocean from the turtle farm at Habaraduwa, surfing, snorkelling or shipwreck diving in the aqua marine waters of Unawatuna, taking a catamaran trip on the scenic lakes at Koggala and visiting Cinnamon island, visiting nearby buddhist temples, taking a yoga class or relaxing massage in Unawatuna, hiring a bicycle and cycling inland amongst the paddy fields admiring the gorgeous views or you may just want to relax in the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of the villa.

There is a chef at the Villa to cook your meals for you if you wish for a small fee. Just buy all the ingredients. Or if you want to cook yourselves the Villa has a fully equipped modern kitchen. Alternatively you could try the many restaurants in Unawatuna, Dellawella, Talpe or Galle. There is a housekeeper at the Villa that comes daily and takes care of cleaning and gardening. Babysitting can be arranged if needed.

The villa can be rented as a small yoga retreat venue. It is fully equiped with yoga mats, bolsters, blocks, bricks and belts.

We can arrange airport transfers and also recommend a travel agent if you would like to go on a tour of Sri Lanka.

“Great for young kids, too. A perfect stay.”

Reviewed 19 May 2015

I stayed at the Shalini Villa for 4 nights in May with my wife, mother, and three children, ages 7, 5 and 3. The home was perfect for those with small kids as it afforded them the space they needed to play and spread out. When we arrived after the long (3 hour) drive from Colombo, we were greeted by a delicious lunch of fresh fish. The meals were a true treat, because it was so nice not to have to go out for dinner or breakfast. Taranga, the cook, arrived at 8:00 every morning and made a Western breakfast for the kids with no spice and a Sri Lankan breakfast for us with spice, and it was a great spread. I had mentioned to Allison when booking about the possibility of purchasing beer and wine, and Taranga and the butler (don't recall his name, but his services were beyond that of a "maid" or even gardener) had purchased both for us and it was waiting for us upon our arrival, too. The staff arranges tuk-tuks for us when we wanted to go to the beach or in to town, and when I ran out of Sri Lankan rupees, they happily made arrangements to exchange Indian rupees for us. I was exceptionally pleased with the food and service. The grounds are beautiful. A great place to stay all around.

“Not to be missed!”

I stayed at Shalini Villa for 3 nights after a yoga retreat further north. From the minute I arrived, it was sheer bliss!! I was greeted by the housekeeper, Kamindika who made sure I didn't want for anything during my stay. The villa itself is very well kept, very clean and spacious. I had more than enough space by myself and would definitely be keen to return with a bigger group. I think it would be great for a family stay. There's also enough space in the living area to have your own yoga retreat there, plus the gorgeous garden and pool area, which is tranquil and full of wildlife. It really did feel like a slice of paradise lying by the pool and watching the monkeys in the trees and birds, flora and fauna. It's a very short trip to Unawatuna beach - probably best to take a tuk tuk which are readily available (Kamindika can arrange this for you) which is lined with numerous bars and restaurants but I would highly recommend taking advantage of the in house cook, Taranga - exceptionally good value and absolutely delicious food. As I was staying on my own, I had an absolute banquet and didn't even feel like i'd made in - roads! He'll cook to your request using local ingredients - I had an amazing curry with prawns as well as numerous accompanying dishes. There's a lot to do nearby - you can visit Galle, where there is lots to see and do - shopping, some of which is high end but you should also go to the spice market, I came back with lots of spices. You can also see the stick fishermen, visit an aryuvedic garden, take a trip to spice island…and more. I would highly recommend a trip to see the place for yourself!

“Truly amazing stay!”

I would highly recommend staying at the Shalini Villa, we had an amazing time there. A very peaceful and tranquil setting. Leaving the luxury of the Villa is hard but if you do Unawatuna's beach bars and restaurants are very close by. All of the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The Villa itself is very spacious, has very tall ceilings and is airy throughout. The bedrooms are minimalist and luxurious. A great stay and would definitely come back! Many thanks

“third time at this villa in paradise”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2014

we recently stayed at the wonderful Shalini Villa for the third time in three years…we don't even think of staying anywhere else…only one small problem…it is so nice we hardly want to leave the pool and gardens all day and it breaks our hearts every time we ave to leave..could not recommend it more highly for style, comfort, food, service…..nothing is ever too much of a problem for the staff who are so attentive and kind

“Sri Lanka 2014”

Reviewed 28 Apr 2014

We had a really fantastic stay in Sri Lanka, our second week after a tour of the island was spent at Shalani. We could not have asked for a better way to spend our final week in Sri Lanka. After a week of being under each other's feet Shalani villa was big enough for us to spread out and do our own thing, and still come together at the end of the day. The house keepers were really attentive and a pleasure to have as company, and even attended our wedding! The villa itself is immaculate and is a really beautiful place to stay, close enough to the hussle and bussle but far enough to be peaceful.

“We really recommend Shalini Villa!”

Reviewed 20 Mar 2014

We really enjoyed our one week stay in Unawatuna and Shalini Villa. We were five friends and the house was perfect for us. Big, comfortable bedrooms with ac and clean bathrooms. The staff was very friendly and service minded and the food was really great. Still dreaming about the tasty curry dishes! We would love to come back!

“Nearly Dreamlike Privacy Villa”

Reviewed 6 Mar 2014

This Villa reflects what many people may have in mind thinking about being in paradise on holidays. A fantastic garden and beautiful designed Villa inside which attracts you immediately when entering the gate. Each bed room with its proper bath room and the living room in combination with its open kitchen are very spacious. The garden and the pool invites you for relaxing and observing the sportive chipmunks, Kingfisher which are coming early in the morning or a group of monkeys climbing in the palms and trees around the Villa. Not to forget the outstanding friendly and helpful staff which served us in a way of nearly perfect balance of attentive service and keeping the privacy. Every morning we were pleased to enjoy the delicious breakfast again, of course eating every morning too much but who cares :-). The same story happened again every evening with the dinner as the cook Tharanga is simply great! We loved the vegetable suprises he created and the fantastic curry and fish meals. We have spend 4 weeks in the Villa and we will definitely come back - soon!

“Little slice of paradise”

Reviewed 16 Jan 2014

I stayed at the Shalini villa our of a very short term decision ... it was impressive how the owner made everything possible within few hours. Immediately at our arrival we felt like we have arrived in paradise. A beautiful house, a nice pool, a great garden, great bedrooms, and everything was perfectly set in place, as if you would arrive home. The housekeeper is like the little soul of the villa, making everything possible, organizing trips and tuktuk pick-ups, always smiling and extremely friendly. An amazing add-on is the resident cook, who prepared evening after evening amazing local foods, whatever we desired - seafood, curries, fish, Sri Lankan specialities, too good to be true! We left with more than one crying eye and have started right away to plan our next trip there. It is the perfect place to stay if you want a little escape, in a gorgeous tropical surrounding, you have a the privacy you could get. The Shalini villa is a little slice of paradise. I would return any time.

“A truly relaxing and indulging experience in a little piece of p”

Reviewed 10 Jan 2014

Staying a Shalini Villa was an amazing experience. the pick up from the airport and drive down couldn't have been simpler and then the wow factor of driving through the gates into the villa lasted for our entire stay. This is a beautiful place to stay, the house simply and stylishly furnished and the balance of the 3 double rooms with a further twin, was perfect for us to stay as a family. The garden and pool were also fantastic for those days when relaxing at came to feel like 'home' was enough. We were thoroughly pampered - Kamindika arranged all our trips for us, from Blue Whale watching at Mirissa, Galle Fort, visiting the turtle hatchery or a simple relax at the Sanctuary Spa in Unawatuna. Thuranga, also who provides breakfasts (an amazing array of local fruit and every kind of egg dish), is also an excellent cook and a daily dish of fresh local sea food has to be tried. All of this with the wonderful beach at Unawatuna a 5 minute Tuk-Tuk ride away. Would I go back again - absolutely. Thank you for one of the best holidays I have ever had.

“Lovely private villa idyll”

Reviewed 29 Dec 2013

We stayed in the lovely Shalini Villa and were looked after beautifully by Kamindika and Tharanga. We stayed with our children aged 9 & 7 and it was a fantastically relaxing part of our travels around Sri Lanka. The best bit was the hospitality of Kamindika and Tharanga, nothing was too much trouble and they were fantastic with our children, we enjoyed all the meals prepared by Tharanga and the daily visits by the local troop of monkeys. We would love to go back again!!
