“Nice, but not Great”

Reviewed 27 Nov 2017

I would rate a 3.5 if possible. The inside of the cabin was very pretty and very nicely decorated in a rustic/modern feel. The beds were pretty comfortable and the cabin provided plenty of space for 2 couples. We enjoyed the stay overall, but for the price, there were some issues. The exterior was not at all appealing. The cabin is raised ion stilts and underneath was not clean and had lots of spiderwebs. First impression was negative. Inside the cabin, some maintenance was lacking. The ceiling fans above the dining table and on the porch did not work. The main heating unit did not work, and the smaller heat/air unit made a loud noise. The ceiling fan in the front bedroom had a thick layer of dust on it, such that we would not use it in order to avoid slinging dust everywhere. The owner did supply an extra box fan and small space heater, which were enough to take up the slack though. The hot tub was big and nicely situated on the back, screened porch, but it also needed maintenance. All of the jets did not work, there was a clog of hair we pulled from the filter, and the cover was ancient and looked horrible and was so heavy it took two of us to literally drag it off the tub. (Both of the men are recovering from surgeries and on 25lb lifting restrictions, so we two women had to handle this task, and it was very hard to do!) I have never seen a hot tub cover that heavy! There was a good bit of cookware in the cabinets, but be advised to bring your own skillets. The one skillet was a non-stick originally but has been misused and is old, so everything sticks now! Otherwise, the kitchen was nicely appointed and all appliances were nice and useable. No need to pack a lot of kitchen supplies! The “rules” stated that we had to clean up everything and sweep the floors before leaving, which I thought was a little crazy for a $180 per night accommodation! I definitely understand cleaning the kitchen up and putting the dishes in the dishwasher, but sweeping seemed a bit extreme. We have stayed in many cabins over the years and have never been asked to do that. Also, we tried taking the garbage out but the garbage can provided was already full when we got there and was not emptied during our 4-day stay. Regarding fishing, this is a perfect fishing place, if you bring boat or waders, as the channel is quite a ways from the edge and we could not get close enough to it. Mind though, this wasn’t a “fishing trip” for us, so we didn’t bring waders and it wasn’t a huge problem. We could have used the free canoe rental or rented a boat if we wanted to really do some fishing! (Another maintenance issue here - the boardwalk down to the river is in need of repairs as well. There are many rotten boards.) Overall we enjoyed the stay and the area was beautiful, but for the price, I wouldn’t recommend for a getaway that is not centered around fishing. We two couples rent a cabin somewhere in AR every year for a sister/brother-in-law getaway, and this was our most expensive but least satisfying so far. If you’re looking for a great fishing trip with decent accommodations in a nice atmosphere though, this is probably for you!!

Response from the owner Dear Sheila, I'm sorry you had so many issues with your stay here. It is always our goal to have satisfied customers and that is why I stopped so often to ask if you needed anything. We could have addressed any problems during your stay. Thank you for letting us know about the skillets. We will definitely have those replaced. The heating unit that was running is a back up unit. The primary central heat and air unit stopped working recently and we have the new replacement sitting here waiting to be installed. You're right that backup unit is noisy. I do apologize for the hot tub cover. It has absorbed so much water over the years and is extremely heavy. The new cover will be custom made to be much, much lighter. It will be in place in the next month. The cedar boards on the bridge are not rotten, but have visually deteriorated in spots. It is in no way unsafe. Thank you for choosing us.

“Guided Trout Fishing Birthday Surprise”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2013

We had an amazing time. The cabin was beautiful and extremely clean, with various little touches that made the stay fun. Chris is an excellent trout guide, and my family and I genuinely enjoyed his company on the river. We're already planning our next trip there!

“Very relaxing with freindy staff”

We were just getting away with the chance to get in some fishing room was very nice and the fishing was good as well. Every thing was clean and in working order and nicely decorated.

“Perfect family retreat.”

Reviewed 23 Jun 2013

We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience at this resort. We expected a good fishing trip but we got so much more. The quiet location, the privacy and comfort of the cabin, exceeded our expectations. Chris and Carol have found a way to cater to the needs of the fishermen while providing a retreat experience for the non-sportsmen as well. Chris saw to a fun day of fishing for the guys, then a relaxing canoe/kayak excursion for all of us. Our family also enjoyed the opportunity to cook meals and relax together. To watch the sun come over the hills with coffee on the front porch then relax in the evenings on the back porch with the chiminea and hot tub! Wow! Not the typical "fishing camp"!

“Relaxing stay at White River Cabin.”

The service was excellent. The Jacksons made us feel right at home.White River Cabin is the place to be to relax and recharge. Location was close to Mountain Home. What we both liked best about the cabin was the privacy.

“Perfect!”

Reviewed 2 Apr 2012

We absolutely loved it! Excellently located on the White River, but still close enough to drive over to Norfork Lake (approx 15-20 mins). The owners, Carol & Chris are an extremely nice couple. They were so accommodating and added just the right personal touch, which was very refreshing. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. We had such a wonderful stay that we're already trying to make arrangements to get back there for a longer visit and we just got left yesterday :) I would highly recommend this resort!!!

“Secluded perfection on the White River!”

Reviewed 23 Mar 2012

This was our 3rd stay in less than a year, we like it that much. Our top priority is fishing and the White River and surrounding tributaries offer some of the best in the entire nation. Couple excellent fishing for trout and smallmouth bass with outstanding accommodations and you have one of the premier destinations for sportsmen anywhere. The acreage surrounding Riverside Retreat On The White River is secluded and quiet and the river itself is a stones throw away. The cabins are separated far apart enough to give the feel of comfort and seclusion. Inside the cabins are warm and inviting and impeccably clean with a homey, rustic feel. These cabins are new and are anything but rundown. Let me tell you about the owners Chris and Carol Jackson, the main reason to stay at Riverside Retreat. Easy going, kind, down to earth, are all good descriptions. They welcome you and bend over backwards to make your stay a memorable experience. They do this without being verbose or bothersome. Carol seems a bit quiet and reserved with a confident calm about her. She takes great pride in every detail. Chris is a bit more outgoing and is a very interesting guy to get to know. I've fished with him now a couple of times now and consider him a friend. Chris has been guiding on the White River and surrounding tributaries for over 30 years and to say he knows his stuff is a huge understatement. Extremely knowledgeable from everything to lure selection, tactics, and river conditions to life in general. Plus he's a fun guy to fish with to boot! Together Chris and Carol have created a rare jewel in the entire White River basin. Give them a call for your next White River trip, I'm certain you will find Riverside Retreat most accommodating.

“Fantastic choice for a family!”

Reviewed 7 Nov 2011

I did lots of research, and am so glad we found Chris and Carol's cabins. They were absolutely beautiful, spotlessly clean, nice in design and decor, and private from each other. Carol filled us with more ideas than we could fit into our schedule (we tried!), and Chris did a nice guided fishing trip for my husband. We will never try anyplace in the area other than their cabins... they are perfect in every way.

“A wonderful 'off the beaten path' place to relax!”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2011

My husband and I, and 3 of our best friends stayed on our birthday weekend in July. 3 of us all had birthdays that fri-sat-sun. It was 100 degrees+ here, and so nice there next to the river. Even though it was so hot, and the river and lake were flooded, we could not have chosen a better place to stay! Beautiful, relaxing, and comfortable, we had everything we wanted or needed. Chris and Carol are wonderful hosts! We hope to return, when the river is more 'user friendly'! Still, the river was beautiful, we loved cooking out every night and playing the games provided, and the jacuzzi tub was so great, it was everything we wanted for our celebration!
