“Great Experience!”

Reviewed 13 Feb 2012

We stayed 5 days in this beautiful house. It is super comfortable with both western beds and japanese tatami well set up. The house is located in the very center of kyoto, tons of delicious traditional restaurants nearby and major metro lines are within walking distance. One thing to mention, the staff speaks perfect english and is very helpful whenever needed!Very important to us... as neither of us speak japanese... We would definately like to go back to Shikokuan next time in kyoto!

Response from the manager Thank you for your comments! It was a pleasure accommodating you and helping you find your way around Kyoto. There really are a lot of great restaurants and sightseeing areas in this ancient city. We hope you will return in the very near future and will stay at Shikokuan again. We look forwarding to the day when we can see you. Warm regards.

“A Perfect Location”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2011

Shikokuan Machiya is in the perfect Kyoto location. In an amazing laneway. You could spend all your time within a few blocks, never be bored and get a wonderful cultural experience. The canal and the river are truly wonderful and only a step away. The residence is small but has everything you need. The owner is extremely helpful and responsive. You really feel that you are living in Japanese style - with the western beds making it just that bit easier! We didn't cook as much as we thought we would because the places to eat are so varied and so plentiful (and at all price levels) - and the supermarkets and department stores nearby are full of choices of prepared foods. Highly recommended.

Response from the manager Thank you for your feedback. The nearby canal and river are two of my favorite places in the city so I’m glad you were able to take in their beauty and tranquility. I hope that you will have an opportunity to visit Kyoto and stay here again. Warm regards.

“Great choice for historic Kyoto”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2011

My wife and 3 year old daughter just stayed here (June 2011) for 8 nights. This place is fantastic and we highly recommend it. The pictures are very accurate. It is a great blend of old Japenese style and modern design and convenience, and an exercise in Japanese efficiency: 2 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 bath rooms and a kitchen and laundry room closet all in about 700 square feet over 2 stories. I wasn't that sure about the location, having never been to Kyoto before, but after staying for the week I would say this is nearly perfect location for a first visit to Kyoto as you can walk to many of the sites, easily access all public transportation, but yet are not exactly in the main tourist ghetto -- which is just across the river in Gion -- or in downtown 5-10 minutes walk to the north, which is too busy. I would estimate that there are 200 restaurants within a 5 minute walk of this place, many being beautiful ones over the river or in classic narrow Kyoto streets. The property manager, Hiro araki, speaks flawless English with an aussie accent and is very considerate. My only complaints were that the Internet was not wireless (just a cable) but he said he would fix that, and that many of the door jams/head clearances are a bit low as is typical in Japan; if you are over 6 feet tall this may be an inconvenience. Overall this place is great value if you can afford this price range.

Response from the manager Thank you for your detailed comments. I’m incredibly happy to hear that you made the most out of Shikokuan’s convenient location. It definitely has an East meets West, traditional but modern, and quiet but near the heart of the action feel to the place. As for the low overhangs, this is one of the trade-offs for keeping the traditional ambiance to the place. But I am looking into placing some padding for our taller guests’ consideration. We have also just installed WI-fi for easy access to the internet. Again, it was lovely to meet and accommodate you all and I hope you will stay here again on your next visit to Kyoto. Warm regards.
