“Third visit to Day Cottage - it's as charming as ever!”
June 6-13, 2015 was our third time to stay in this lovely cottage on Union Bay in Trenton. We always fly into Bangor and rent a car. It's an easy drive to Ellsworth, then 12 minutes later, you're pulling up into a shady driveway lined with pine trees. The cottage is far enough off the road, that you won't see or hear any cars. Staying at Day Cottage a slice of Heaven! During the day it is a blast watching the tide roll in and to guess how high it's going to be. Sometimes, if we are lucky, we get to see dolphins in the bay. At night, it's so quiet you can hear loons calling on the water, and it's dark enough to see a sky full of stars. The Lynches recently added a wonderful deck area if you want to sit closer to the water. The screened-in porch is my favorite perch when it's raining, which is not very often. The beds are comfortable with high quality linens and blankets. They have thought of every detail that a guest might want or need, such as washer and dryer, large shower, cheery kitchen fully loaded with dishes and pans. You only need to bring your clothes and personal items. A large screen TV was added since our last visit, and when it was too dark to be outside, my husband and I watched movies. (There is a Redbox next to Walgreens in Ellsworth.) It was only the 2 of us the last two times, but the cottage easily sleeps 10, and there is plenty of seating for meals as well. We've stayed three times because we know what to expect, and we feel like it's our second home. We leave each time with our mental/spiritual batteries recharged. We highly recommend it for a getaway vacation, whether it's two or ten!
Day Cottage is a a very pretty traditional home set in a fantastic shore side location. It is a perfect mix of 'old world' and modern and is extremely comfortable. We loved our stay here and as others have said - a week is simply not long enough! Teresa and John are extremely hospitable hosts who went out of their way to ensure we had a great time, guiding us to the house and giving us a very thorough introduction to the property. They were always happy for us to call them if we had any queries and they had printed off for us loads of information on things we had said we wanted to do. The shore side location is fabulous and very peaceful and you get the most beautiful sunsets. It is a short drive to the nearest shops and about a 20 minute drive onto DI and Acadia NP. We highly recommend Day Cottage to anyone looking to stay in the area - a perfect romantic trip or a great family destination - it caters very well for all!
“Absolutely perfect, exceeded my expectations.”
My family of four stayed at Day Cottage for a week in September 2014. Teresa was a joy to meet, and welcomed us like family. She even made my son a cake with candles for his birthday. Teresa and her husband gave us the grand tour and told us the history of the cottage when we arrived. Day Cottage really is a family treasure, and I felt privileged to be able to share it. The cottage is beautifully remodeled and decorated, and had every amenity we could need. The pictures do not do it justice. Everything was spotlessly clean (a must!), the linens were of nice quality, and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed a fire in the fireplace most nights. The kitchen was perfectly outfitted to do some serious cooking, and the washer and dryer were very handy. The Wifi worked great, and there was a selection of cable channels; however, I think the tv was intended to keep the grandkids busy on a rainy day, it was pretty small. But you don't go to a cottage on the beach to watch tv! The rocking chairs on the screened in porch were great for having morning coffee. Day Cottage is located midway between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor, which makes it very convenient for supply runs in town and exploring Mount Desert Island. The cottage is right on the water's edge of the bay, on a wooded lot. One of the best things was watching the tide come in and go out; at high tide you would think you were on a boat. It is so dark at night that the stargazing is spectacular. It is the first time we had ever seen the Milky Way in real life. The cottage was so peaceful that we didn't even leave it some days. The weather was too cold to go swimming or use the kayaks while we were there, but we enjoyed walking down the rocky shore and the kids loved climbing the Big Rock. I would highly recommend Day Cottage, and hope that we can stay there again.
“The perfect ocean front get-away in Maine”
This cottage is close enough to Acadia for easy day trips, but just far enough away to easily get away from the national park crowds. We absolutely loved it. The cottage is 100 years old and in excellent condition, offers the quaint Maine experience, but is also fully outfitted with modern amenities, appliances and wifi. There is a wonderful screened in porch, where we ate every meal with our ocean view. The deck has steps that lead to the water, which laps at the steps at high tide, or reveals a wonderful treasure trove at low tide. The cottage was spotless when we arrived, and all the linens and towels were fresh. The owners took care of all the little things so we could just relax, for example, the firewood was fully stocked so we could have cozy fires in the fireplace on the cooler evenings. We loved the Day Cottage!
“I wanted to stay another week.”
We loved our vacation to Maine. The Day Cottage was even better then the pictures online. There is no doubt how much Teresa and John love this house. They have taken such care in fixing it up. We loved staying here. Sitting on the screened in porch, overlooking the bay, in the morning while sipping on coffee was one of my favorite things. My teenage boys loved swimming, tubing and kayaking in the bay in the backyard. The master bedroom upstairs had the best view of the water. Hearing the sound of the water and feeling the cool temperature in the evenings made for a wonderful sleep. The drive to acadia and Bar Harbor was not difficult and we loved returning to the Day House when we where done exploring. Wish we could have stayed another week. I would recommend staying here. I want to come back!
“Picture an outstandingn cottage on the Maine coast - This is it”
If you've ever imagined staying on the beautiful Maine coast the Day Cottage is just the place! This iconic turn of the century cottage has been completely and lovingly restored by John and Theresa with meticulous attention to detail and it shows. Sit on the screened in porch along two sides and gorge on Maine lobster while watching the tide roll in and out literally 20 feet away. Don't worry, the cottage won't get wet! Or take a kyak out on the bay at your front door. On cool nights we had a roaring fire in the central fireplace rebuilt from the original brick. One of the true highlights to staying at the Day Cottage is sleeping with the windows open and hearing the tide going in and out. I don't think there is a more soothing sound. If you can pull yourself away Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Castile, Downeast and all the other great spots on the central Maine coast are short drives. Get up early and go to the top of Cadillac Mountain and view the sunrise first in the us. Or just relax at the cottage. You won't be bored! John and Theresa are outstanding hosts and make sure your every need is met ..
“Heaven on Earth”
Our family had such a memorable trip to the Day Cottage this year! The interior is so comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is marvelous to use, plus it is equipped with everything we needed for our group. The porch is delightful-no matter what the weather. We enjoyed many meals outside! Some in our group even swam-even though it was May! Waking to the sound of the water started each day off with such a relaxing feeling-we just didn't want to leave. The Lynch family has a true gem here..Plus, they're the nicest people on earth! Thank you over and over again!
“Super Experience in Maine!”
We stayed in the lovely Day Cottage in late august 2013 with our 2 kids who are 15yo and 12yo. Great setting and everything you need in a vacation home! Everything was clean and well thought out. Access to kayaks and walking out your back door to the water was such a nice bonus. I'm an avid cook and I could find everything I needed in the kitchen. John and Teresa have paid close attention to every detail and it shows! Acadia is a short drive away. In the peak summer months though parking can be hard. Ll Bean runs free shuttles out of Bar Harbor to help offset this which is very nice. We went whale watching, hiking, shopping and bicycling. Kids had the most fun bicycling (we went twice it was so much fun). There are over 50 miles of carriage trails in acadia that are only open to hikers and bikers. Super nice and very picturesque - highly recommend! Free unlimited parking on West St in Bar Harbor if you get there by 7:30-8am. Some openings on and off during the day if you're lucky! We would drive in early to get a parking spot since we knew we were spending the whole day in acadia, have breakfast somewhere in Bar Harbor, rent bikes, catch the first bus (with a bike trailer) at 9 then off for an all day ride in beautiful acadia. Be sure and pack water and snacks or make reservations at the Jordan Pond House where you can ride and park your bike and enjoy popovers and great scenery. Best part was coming back to the Day Cottage, having a glass of wine at sunset and listening to the loons! Great relaxing week! Thanks again John and Teresa for all the memories! :)
We stayed at Terri and John's Day Cottage for a week in august with our three children. The Day Cottage was even more charming and picturesque than the photos online. John and Terri were very accommodating and take excellent care of this beautiful cottage. It was true americana and Maine. The screened porch was our favorite place to sit and listen to the water. The kids loved exploring the rocky beach and kayaking with the kayaks provided. The Day Cottage was the perfect place for day trips to acadia and Bar Harbor as well as relaxing in the woods on the water away from it all! We were so glad we chose this property, and our family has special memories of our week at this beautiful retreat.
My friends and I stayed in the Day Cottage in early fall and took advantage of the varied amenities including a pre-laid fire and the outdoor living area on the wrap-around porch. It was a peaceful getaway, with comfortable beds and a full kitchen with 6 kinds of vinegar (that really impressed). The lawn was immaculate as was the interior of the cottage, a spacious well-appointed home-away-from-home.
