“Without a doubt the best cottage ever!”
My husband, 5 year old son and I had a weekend break at Jemima Puddleduck Cottage and can't wait to go back! From the moment of booking, Mrs Trafford was extreemely helpful and prompt in her replies to queries. She offered advice on where to eat locally and even booked a table at the Swan Inn on our behalf (which was a good recommendation). And what a lovely cottage! The fire was set and ready to light in the comfortable and welcoming living room, and the bedrooms were both warm and airy, as well as being nicely decorated. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed, and the Trafford family even let us borrow their two dogs to walk. My son was able to put the ducks to bed and let them out onto the little stream nearby in the morning, which made his day. While Mrs Trafford says she just wants to make sure her guests are comfortable, i would say she went above and beyond in terms of her kindness and welcoming manner. We've already recommened the cottage to family, and plan returning as soon as we can.
“The cottage was so cosy and the ambience of the farm and village was very friendly”
As soon as we arrived we had a very warm welcome from the owner. The cottage was so comfortable with a log fire in the lounge which we lit a few times. The cottage is well equipped, the only slight problem is there was only one bathroom. As we were with another couple we had to juggle a couple of times but no real problem. The cottage is close to lots of very good walks and climbs for the more adventurous. We really felt part of the community whilst we were staying there. The village pub is good for evening meals if you want and the landlord and customers were all very friendly. The chickens and runner ducks which roam are a good sense of amusement and happily ignored our dog. It was a really lovely week. We would certainly return in the future.
“Peaceful, Quiet and perfect scenery”
We have just been to Puddle Duck cottage for a short break. And we received a very warm welcome from the owner allison who made us welcome and advised us on walks and local sites. The cottage was clean and comfortable and very roomy, the open fire in the living room was very welcoming after a ramble in fells on a autumn day. The location was perfect, the cottage is set next to stream in a small quiet village at the foot of Skiddaw with Bassenthwaite Lake only a short walk. We will certainly be coming back.
“Beautiful period cottage, spacious but cosy”
Very friendly welcome (and a few free eggs!) in a lovely quiet setting. You'll be tempted to stay in the cottage and not go anywhere! It's a real home from home and I guarantee you'll want to come again. The local pub in the village is worth visiting for home cooked food, particularly if your fed up going to all the other pubs in England that seem to only have a microwave oven! Best fish and chips I've had for years. Keswick Town is delightful to walk around and you can enjoy the most stunning landscapes on either short or long walks around Derwent Water Lake. Enjoy a picnic to remember at Friar's Crag and enjoy the stunning view of the Lake District Fells.
Response from the owner Thank you for your kind review. It was a pleasure meeting you, and delighted you enjoyed your stay. Will look forward to meeting you again in the future.
“Would have been very happy to stay another week”
Our weeks' stay at Puddle Duck Cottage was a week that we will remember with great affection. Mr and Mrs Trafford were lovely and made us feel very welcome. The cottage was clean and spacious with nice pieces of furniture to make it feel very homely. To be honest we expected it to be a little noisy being a working farm but as it turned out it was one of the most quietly situated cottages we have ever stayed in. The village itself - well, picture in your head the children's tv programme 'Postman Pat' and you can imagine how quaint it looked - just lovely! Wonderfully situated with great walks close by and more popular walks very easy to get to. If you like the Lake District this is a good cottage to stay in and we would not hesitate in recommending it to friends. Thank you
“Fantastic holiday at very reasonable rates”
We have stayed at this cottage many times, the hospitality is second to none. The cottage is to us home from home, all this in breathtaking scenery, the best in the Lake District. The location is a small village with walks into the countryside only minutes away and a local pub that serves excellent food, and is dog friendly. All in all if you like the Lake District this is definitely a place to make your base.Main shopping can be done at lovely Keswick or Cockermouth, neither too far away.
“Fantastic cottage and place”
This place is a little gem! You couldn't ask for a more relaxing break. We received a lovely welcome from all the family, nothing seemed a bother, even during there busy time with lambing etc,. The cottage is lovely, it's of a really good standard. The cottage is in a wonderful setting, just step out of the back door for country walks. We had a roaring coal fire every night and ventured to the local pub 2 minutes walk which served great food and more coal fires. Will definitely return back, hopefully for longer stay next time.
“Fabulous short break away from it all”
Jemima Puddleduck cottage is a cosy retreat that allows you to leave the. Hustle and bustle behind. Well equipped with the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in, the cottage has everything you would need for a perfect short break. We even had fantastic weather which made the whole experience even better. The cottage was warm and cosy, the owners friendly and kind and the setting fab. We hope to go back again.
“Great little retreat for exploring the Northern Fells”
Great place to stay. Spacious lounge and unfortunately the weather was too warm for us to enjoy the open fire! Felt very homely and enjoyed watching the ducks and chickens wandering around the farmyard. We were unfamiliar with this part of the Lakes so new territory for us but a great base for exploring the Northern Fells and very quick easy to get in and out of Keswick. Local pub very welcoming too.
Response from the owner Thank you for your kind review. Pleased you enjoyed your short break here at Puddle-duck cottages Bassenthwaite and the surrounding Lakes and fells. Our traditional farmyard environment seems to be quite popular, where the ducks and hens roam freely from farm to stream, including our recent baby ducklings who are now quite settled in to the daily routine of swimming and searching for worms and tasy bites by the riverside.. This years weather has been quite unusual to say the least, but you were lucky to have a warm spell! Hope we may see you again sometime. The Trafford family
“wonderful location on a working farm near an excellent pub”
We had a wonderful week in Puddleduck cottage - beautiful surroudings convenient for the hills and Keswick/Cockermouth. The cottage was cosy yet large enough for our 2 lots of visitors to stay. It was convenient to the local pub and for walks with the dog from the cottage.
