“Great weekend getaway spot”

Reviewed 13 Oct 2014

My husband and I had a really nice anniversary getaway at the Birds of a Feather lodge this past weekend. The house is very comfortable and spacious and the best feature by far is the huge screened in back porch with hot tub. There were a couple of robes in the closet that made getting in and out of the hot tub more pleasant in the chilly weather. Bedding, towels, hand soap, body wash, shampoo and conditioner were all provided. The house has a stock of very diverse DVDs in case you feel like watching something random one night. The kitchen had everything we needed, there were lots of blankets in the chest in the living room, and there were plenty of pillows for the beds. We followed the very clear directions to the beach through the woods and dunes and were rewarded with a beautiful hike and lovely, completely empty beachfront. The hike is definitely strenuous but not impossible, especially if you take breaks and just enjoy the scenery for a bit while you catch your breath. I am generally not one for hardcore hiking but I found this to be worthwhile. The area nearby has some cute restaurants and shopping, and I'm sure there are even more outdoor activities available in the regular season. It's close to other cute SW Michigan towns like Saugatuck and Benton Harbor. We kayaked and visited a cider distillery during our stay. The only minor annoyances: the christmas lights on the back porch didn't work, there was no connector for us to plug in my husband's phone so we could play music on the back porch or inside (we ended up buying an adapter cable so we could do this) and the mattress in the master bedroom is a bit lumpy. We also couldn't connect to the wifi, but decided it didn't really matter since we were trying to relax anyway. Overall, they were minor things and we enjoyed the stay very much. The location is great coming from Chicago - only 90 minutes away.

“Great Escape”

Me and my boyfriend was renting the house twice. We definitely loved the house and the location. It is really close to the beach - Warren Dunes State Park. Great place to relax. Nice and big hot tub.

“Great 60th Birthday Party for my Mom!”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2013

Nine of my family members recently stayed at Birds of a Feather for my mom's 60th birthday party. It was the perfect spot. Very clean and comfortable. The house is very open so it is great for socializing. The sun porch is especially wonderful. The house is close to wineries and the park. It is a little walk to get to the beach, but the walk is beautiful! If you aren't in the mood to walk, the drive is really easy (about a mile).

“Hardly "Away from it all"”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2013

We were looking for a girls' beach getaway weekend. Though it backs up to the Warren Dunes, the picture of the trail was very far from the house and not convenient to get to. We ended up driving to the beach. Also, a big part that is failed to be mentioned anywhere in the description is it is literally off Red arrow Highway. We didn't really enjoy the front patio as we didn't want to hear cars driving. We definitely took advantage of the hot tub and the back screened in porch was perfect. There were a few lights that were burned out and the roll away cot was old and in my opinion, not suitable for sleeping. It appeared to be broken. There was no soap in the bathroom for hand washing, just shower gel. It served it's purpose but I was disappointed to find it was not as secluded as I thought it would be and thought it would be a little closer to the beach. However, it was the only place we could find that would rent nightly as oppose to weekly

Response from the owner I am happy to have people respond with their experience of the location since I am not trying to hide anything. We are on a rural highway with few cars and my backyard backs up to a 2000 acre park atht runs along the lake. That is why one choses to stay here. I give extremely detailed instructions on how to get to the beach and parking lots. Nobody uses the front patio except to cook. Virtually everyone loves the 500 square foot screened porch with sitting, dining, hot tub, fireplace, stereo and tv for watching DVDS. I am replacing the rollaway after it has seen too much use. I personally replaced all the bulbs so I am surprised something was out after changing almost every bulb a few ago. We provide hand soap and shower gel, dishwasher soap, dish soap and one roll of paper towel ad one roll of toilet paper in each bath and laundry soap for the stackable washer and dryer.. Some houses you have to bring everything yourself.

I booked this place for a surprise getaway for my girlfriend, and was really pleased with it. It is very big - the photos don't really do it justice - and the facilities are really high quality. The barbeque was very big, and had a full range of accessories, the hottub was large and functioned well, and the wifi worked perfectly. There's always a risk that when you go somewhere for the first time, that the quality won't be that great. But we got everything that was promised, and more.

“Exceeded my expectations and the owner was a pleasure to deal wi”

This was my first time renting and didn't quite know what to expect. Right from the initial inquiry, the owner was very helpful. The house is very nice, exactly as shown on the website. I was impressed to see all the different areas of the house. The outdoor grill was perfect for grilling up some food. The open kitchen/living area was a great space to hang out. The jacuzzi was very clean and very big. Overall it was a great house. I couldn't have asked for a better first time experience.
