“Relaxing Jungle vacation”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2014

My spouse had already stayed here once before, but it was my first time at Casitas Calinas. Sylvan and Nadja were excellent hosts. They had answers to all our questions, the cabins were clean and tidy, and the grounds are beautiful. There were always fresh eggs and coconuts from the property. The location is close enough to Belmopan that it is easy to go shopping, but the location is far enough off the Western Highway that we were in the jungle and surrounded by animals. Howler monkeys were a regular occurrence.

“The best jungle experience we have had!”

Reviewed 17 Mar 2014

Just imagine being up at sunrise. Sitting with a cup of coffee on a lounge chair. You can close your eyes and just listen. The howler monkeys are roaring in the jungle not too far away. The birds are singing as they perch themselves on a grand old tree. You can hear an owl hoot in the distance! Just beautiful! Oh how I wish I was still there! The cabin that we stayed in was bright and cozy with all the comforts of home. The owners and their staff were very pleasant and I would go back in a heart beat!

“Best Vacation ever!”

We spent Christmas week in the Casitas Calinas - Casita 2. What a fabulous, relaxing experience! The grounds are stunning and the accommodations are top-notch. A wonderful first impression of Belize - a place we will visit again and again.

“Peaceful, thoughtful, and relaxing”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2013

Me, my wife and a friend stayed here earlier this year. We were on a property-hunting trip looking for a piece of paradise of our own. Several things about Casitas Calinas attracted us, including the location (Cayo), the seclusion, and the solar energy business run by Sylvan, Nadja's husband. Since many properties in Belize are off the grid we wanted to stay at a solar-fueled property and ask a lot of questions. Sylvan was very accommodating, gave us a great tour of his system and answered all of our pesky questions. In general the level of hospitality was perfect for us. Sylvan made it clear that he was always available (Nadja was out of the country during our visit), and to call if we needed anything. He was always helpful with advice and answers, whether about the local real estate market, solar energy, or just where to buy some chicken for the grill. So we had peace and quiet when we wanted it, with an expert concierge when we needed one. The casita was spotless, secure, and well-equipped, and the property is stunning. Lots of fruit trees (guests may pick and eat whatever is ripe in season), shade, lawn, and picnic tables in strategic locations. The little rocky 'beach' on the river is a perfect spot to cool off. We did not purchase the a/C option, and were comfortable without it. If you need a/C all the time Belize may not be for you! The location is a bit out of the way, which was a plus for us. It's close enough to town that you can go out for dinner, but you can't just run down to the corner store for a 6-pack of Belikan - it's more like a 20min drive each way. It was perfect for us, but maybe not everyone. When we would return from a long day driving and swinging machetes looking at property we would sit back after dinner and invariably think "That 25 ac over in X was OK, but what we really want is a place just like this one." It is very likely we will be back for another visit.

“Wow and Wonderful”

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. The owner picked us up in Belize City. Enroute he gave us an interesting commentary and orientation to the country and culture. We knew we made the right choice when we arrived at our cabin - very clean and decorated with fresh cut flowers. Enough food in the fridge for breakfast and supper plus staples to last our week stay. The beautiful landscaped grounds right in the jungle along the Belize River. Howler monkeys and a variety of birds also greeted us. Trails bikes & kayak provide access to the jungle and it's critters. The grounds keeper is very knowledgeable about the natural history and the cleaning lady, although we never met her, left us such touching notes we kept them. Air conditioned was provided but not need during our stay. The place is powered by solar. There were occasional weak signals with the WiFi due to satellites but it worked just fine for our needs. Fresh eggs from the chicken coupe along with the variety of fresh fruits were tasty treats. We even got to chew on some sugar cane. The beauty of this location is that you can experience jungle in such lovely and quite accommodations. A short drive gets you to capital Belmopan. There are lots of opportunity for day trips to the ocean, markets, caving and scenic drives. But there were days we just stayed around Casitas Calinas because it was so enjoyable. The owners Nadja & Silvan are very gracious and hospital. They are experience travelers themselves and know what their guests would appreciate. They even provide us with a cell phone with minutes, to use for emergency or any local call we need to make. Casitas Calinas is the kinda place that you want your family and all your friends to experience. The only negative I have is in writing this review is by telling the world how great this place is, that there may not be any vacancy the next time we want to book.

“Absolute perfection for our eco-tour honeymoon!”

Reviewed 7 Jun 2013

My new husband and I were fortunate enough to discover Casitas Calinas online before our trip to Belize. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by Silvan, offered a local cell phone and advised to always call with any questions. He was very knowledgeable about the things we wanted to do and helped on several occasions make it happen. The cottage itself was extremely charming, the outside porch (lanai) being the place to be! As a honeymooning couple, we found the bathroom with double shower heads to be a very fun place indeed! Our cozy bedroom was very comfortable with the aid of ac for sleeping. The grounds were just delightful! Fruit trees, roaming chickens, a river to swim in and howler monkeys...all set in lush privacy. The cottage is situated in the Cayo district, perfect for driving to all the Belizian adventure spots in the jungle. The whole place is off the grid, run on solar power. Silvan owns and operates a solar power company that is making headway in Belize. Very eco-friendly. We met Nadja (Casitas is her baby) towards the end of our stay, she was out of town. She was always checking in with Silvan to make sure we were happy! We found her to be a warm and engaging person. We were very sad to leave and will be returning next trip to Belize! We would also recommend Casitas Calinas to anyone looking for a real do it yourself eco-tour of Belize, what a fabulous adventure!

“Relaxing in a hammock enjoying the views of the jungle!”

Reviewed 20 Apr 2013

We so enjoyed our stay. The owners were so kind and helpful with suggestions on where to go and what to see. The 54 acres had trails and lots of Belizean wildlife including monkeys, toucans, fox, parrots, and of course Mosquitos! The screened in porch was quite helpful with those pesky insects. We loved the hammock on the porch, a perfect way to relax and view all of the wildlife. We chose the comfort option which was great for us with the laundry 2 times a week and the air conditioning in the bedroom which we did use a few of the nights. We definetly recommend this gem!

“Our awesome Belize Vacation!”

Reviewed 24 May 2012

Our 3 month stay in Belize at Casitas Calinas was the most wonderful vacation ever! Absolute Paradise! This secluded piece of prestine jungle on the edge of the Belize River with it's many well groomed hiking trails and natural creek and pools is outstanding. If you want to experience Belize and it's natural beauty then... This Is The Place! The owner Nadja Preisig was an outstanding host and very friendly, willing to help out whenever needed. We booked our Cabana through the internet and it was everything that was advertised and so much more. The Cabana was very comfortable, with every convenience to make our stay enjoyable. The place is run on Solar Energy which was great and very reliable. The well which supplied our water was good and safe to drink. The screened in deck was our favorite spot, where we loved to relax and listen to the Howler Monkeys in the trees nearby, many jungle critters and thousands of beautiful birds singing just outside our Cabana. The grounds keeper was so friendly and very imformative on the jungle and critters there. He did such an awesome job keeping the grounds looking so lovely and groomed. The housekeeper was sweet and kind and did a great job cleaning our Cabana, and making it beautiful with her floral touches. We rented our Wingle 4x4 from Casitas Calinas, it was very reliable and comfortable, making our touring very enjoyable. We loved the Cayo District and the location was great. Only about 30 minutes from Belmopan(the capital)and all major amenities. Everyday in Belize was an adventure and we felt so relaxed and safe at Casitas Calinas that we can't wait to come back!

“Staying in Cayo? Look no further!”

Reviewed 23 May 2012

Would we stay here again? Enthusiastically yes! We would not even pause to consider any other place in Belize. Recommend it to our friends and family? That would depend on who. If you are expecting a critter-free environment with room service and spa treatments, this is not the place for you. In fact, why are you even looking at reviews for mainland Belize?! However,if you want a private sanctuary, are not afraid of a few bugs, and want to hear nothing but the wild around you before you go to bed and when you awake,Casitas Calinas is the place for you. Nadja and Silvan were great hosts. They knew that we were there for privacy, and they gave us all the space we needed. We were there for a full 2 weeks, and other than the maid twice per week to clean and do laundry,we saw and heard no one! That is our idea of paradise. However,we did see several bird species,a multitude of flowers, and Crystal even spotted a spider monkey! It was great to come back here after a hard day of spelunking, hiking or Mayan ruin exploring,(see other reviews under our "BloomingPassion" profile),turn on the aC in the bedroom and know that when we went to bed we could sleep in comfort. For breakfast,we experienced another new thing:stealing eggs from chickens! Perhaps those who live rural don't think anything of it,but for city folk like us,it was fun to go to the chicken coop in the morning for our breakfast instead of the fridge. The water is potable right out of the tap,(insert disclaimer). We brought our Katadyn and Steripen and used them only the first couple of days. Then we got lazy, and never suffered for it. The patio is Huge! It is near the size of the entire interior. We slept and cooked inside, but most of our time that we were not away we spent reclining, enjoying the wild around us, and maybe checking email on the free Wifi. Squeemish and/or resorty types? Stay away! Seeking tropical paradise and tranquil solitude - look no further. Book today!!!

“Relaxing in paradise”

My wife and I think Casitas Calina has it all whether you are looking for a quiet hideaway in a beautiful jungle setting or want a comfortable base to visit Belmopan, various aztec ruins, go cave tubing, hang out in San Ignacio(casino if youre interested)in that part of Belize. We did plenty of both. Nadja and Silvan are excellent hosts, there if you need them but not intrusive in any way. Silvan is an expert in solar energy and the entire compound runs on solar which proved to be much more dependable than the electricity in Hopkins. The cabins are well made with full kitchens, excellent water pressure, comfortable beds and large porches for relaxing. Wonderful hosts, clean, modern accomodations in a spectacular setting. What more can we say.
