“Relaxing, Welcoming, Natural Beauty”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2015

We live in Belize so are pretty used to how beautiful the country is and have visited several other islands during the time we lived here, when we arrived at French Louie we were very impressed with how well maintained the island was and how beautiful it was. Alberto and his wife were very accommodating and the meals they prepared were very delicious. They even gave us a choice of what we would like to eat. My granddaughter had a wonderful time exploring the waters, (even though when we went she said she would not go into the sea) once there we could not get her out. We played games in the evening, listen to music and I felt totally pampered and relaxed. I would definitely recommend this island as a "must see" when visiting Placencia area.

“Unforgettable--FLC March 2014”

Dear Kitty, Ranny and alberto Melissa and I would like to thank you all very much for such a memorable vacation in one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. We found the accommodations on French Louie Caye to be very much to our liking, rustic and simple yet very comfortable, and just a few steps away in any direction from the rich gardens of marine life amidst the mangroves and the coral. Alberto kept as fat and happy with his fine cooking and we really loved having fresh fish for dinner every night and hearty fry jacks, beans, rice, eggs and sausage for breakfast. The fresh Belizean fruit and fruit juice was wonderful, especially with a good dose of rum in the evening. It was great to have a breezy, comfortable dining area to relax in after the day's adventures, throw some darts, tip some cocktails and just hang out in the dusk. I'd personally like to thank Ranny for not only one of the most exciting fishing trips we've ever been on, but also for taking the time to install an extra 12V outlet in our bungalow near the bed. I use a Cpap and 120/12V inverter to help me combat sleep apnea at night, and I can't tell you how comfortable it was to get a good night's sleep, especially in such an exotic and beautiful place after a long day of play. I really appreciate you going out of your way to fix that up for me on the spot! We enjoyed the snorkeling very, very much. When it was too windy to fish, it was lovely to have the option to simply slip on our gear and go swimming with the incredible array of reef fishes and corals. We took hundreds of photos and have since become adept at reef fish identification. We find ourselves looking at the undersea FLC pictures over and over again and miss our friends on the reef very much (thx also to the awesome permit who impaled itself on my fly, tried to drown me but eventually surrendered!) Hope you all are well and in good health. We hope to see you again sometime soon! Dave and Melissa March 2014

“Wonderful Honeymoon Spot”

Reviewed 13 Dec 2013

We loved our time on FLC, incredibly relaxing but plenty of opportunity for adventure. Snorkeling was gorgeous, my husband got to fish with alberto who then fried and grilled up their catch for lunch and dinner. Fresh seafood was to die for. The water is amazing and warm, the amenities were just what we expected. Al's cooking was incredible and we filled up at every meal. Everything from scratch. It was incredible. We had privacy when we wanted but could always find alberto if we were in the mood for an adventure. We took beer and rum out with us and there was always ice to keep it chilled and make cocktails. We took some snacks but didn't need them. On our last day the wind had kicked up considerably causing dangerous conditions for return in the smaller boat Ran had brought us to the island on, but that was no problem for the amazing team of Kitty and Ran. They got a larger boat to come pick us up from the island and Kitty made certain that our Maya Island air flight wouldn't leave us behind. All around an amazing experience and we can't wait to come back! Maybe next time I will get a few more yahtzees and my husband will beat al in chess.

“Think Twice”

Not quite paradise. While this Island is lovely, it leaves a lot to be desired. We fully expected a rustic stay, and were excited for the adventure. In the end we were left dissapointed in many aspects. The small island has a lot of garbage. I'm sure it washes up, but the staff made no attempt to clean it up. I found a hypodermic needle on the shore one day while returning from kayaking - could have been bad news if I was not wearing shoes. The rusic cabin was exactly what I expected, however there was a big storm one night and the hatches you would use to cover the windows were so warped I couldn't get them to close. The rain came in from the ceiling and windows and everything got soaked including the bed we were trying to sleep in. I told the caretaker and his response was "oh, yeah I've been meaning to fix those". Not helpful at all. Now to discuss the caretaker. I had imagined someone to be there to help with meals and to be there for assistance etc. I did not expect this man to be there right along with us every single minute of every day. It was like going on my honeymoon with my new husband and another strange man. Plus the fact that he was demeaning towards women and not exactly accomodating really had me sick of him very quickly. He would try to get you to do the things he wanted to do for the day instead of doing what you wanted. One day he talked up this fish we could catch to have for dinner. So we went fishing and actually caught one - we were so excited. Dinner rolls around and no fish - he had taken the one we caught and cut it up to use for bait when he went fishing himself later in the afternoon. Rude! A few tweeks to the cleanliness and caretaker social skills would really improve this place. Unfortunately, I just wouldn't recommend it.

Response from the owner Thank you for your comments. Feedback from our guests is welcome and often instructive. Garbage washing up on shore is always an issue, particularly after a storm. The vast, beautiful beaches one sees at big resorts are a result of all night, every night cleaning by machinery. All coastal areas in the world have this issue; unfortunately the sea is being used as a vast trash can. The caretaker cleans the beach daily, but he is only one man, and when there are guests it is not always possible to keep the island totally pristine. When the weather is windy it can be a really big job! We do our very best and regret very much that you encountered some nasty trash. The caretaker does not do maintenance on the buildings. We were aware of problems with the windows; we fixed them the first week in January when there were two days open without guests (we try to avoid doing this type of work when guests are on the island). We offer our sincere apologies for the wet night; it shouldn’t have happened. Many of our reviews praise our caretaker highly for his friendliness, guiding and other activities. He really wants everyone to experience all the wonderful things to see and do around the island. But not everyone needs to be entertained. He is very willing to provide privacy but apparently he was unaware of your concerns. Unfortunately when we made notes to the caretaker for your visit we advised him of your vegetarian diet restrictions (no meat or fish) but we neglected to tell him it was your honeymoon. We will make sure in the future that he is aware of every honeymoon visit so that this does not occur again. And we would like to advise any future guests that if they would like more privacy let him know – he is always happy to go fishing or tend to chores on another part of the island. Again thank you for your comments – they will only make us better at providing a great experience!

“Best vacation ever!!!”

Wow! Do not go here for three days, that is not enough time! We stayed five nights and wish we had more. Total relaxation and peacefulness. If you need posh don't go, if you want to recharge and get away from it all go go go. We are trying to figure out when to go back. This is definitely the best vacation ever and we have traveled a good bit. Alberto is awesome, his cooking is fantastic. His knowledge of area is extremely interesting. Make sure to do a night snorkel too!! I could go on and on, but my best advice is go right now and reserve a date to go you will be glad you did! What a great time!

Absolutely everything about French Louie Caye was incredible. From the motor boat ride over to the drive to the airport, we didn't have one complaint. The island was incredibly beautiful, the service was outstanding and the food - my god, the food was incredible. We had just as much fun laying on the beach as we did hunting for our our dinner and playing darts with island's caretakers. Visitors should know that this isn't a luxury resort. It's got a rustic personality all its own. And it's dreamy. Did I mention the built in aquarium?

“Perfect. Just absolutely perfect.”

This is the quintessentially perfect place for a Caribbean vacation. All equipment was supplied from kayaks for exploring the other nearby islands to masks and fins for snorkeling right of the dock with abundant fish and amazing coral. We went to French Louie Caye for our honeymoon and could not have been happier, this is a magical place. Nothing that we could say here could do justice to how wonderful this island is, suffice it to say merely that after travel to 36+ countries there is now other place we'd rather return to. “Great snorkeling, great owner, terrible caretaker and booking pe”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2012

I was close to cancelling the island altogether following numerous confused emails from Kitty, the booking agent for the island. She "lost emails" from her inbox, and we had no way of contacting her to find out where to meet someone to take us to the island. Placencia isn't huge, but no, your taxi driver will have no idea where to take you. We spent a stressful two weeks traveling and trying to find computers to be able to respond to yet another confused email lacking information we needed. By the way, it is now two months later, and I just received an email: they forgot to bill us for the air travel they booked to Placencia. Of course they did! We finally used the phone numbers listed on the sign in front of the office (she apparently had left town, and did not tell us, of course) to find cell phone numbers. We were able to get a hold of Ran, the owner. Ran, who is truly wonderful, boated us out to the island and left us with alberto, the cook/caretaker/snorkeling guide. Alberto waited until the second meal to begin telling us of his conversion to Jesus Christ and how a dead person in his village came back to life. He would talk 95% directly to my boyfriend, and I was mainly ignored (I'm guessing because I'm female). The third meal, he told us about how strict he is with his daughter, and how it is disrespectful for unmarried couples to kiss in public (my boyfriend and i, unmarried, were staying in the same room--gasp). Suffice it to say, we did not enjoy the religious or moral lectures at all. The snorkeling was wonderful, and he does have a great pair of eyes to locate fish and animals for you to hold or touch. He's also a pretty good cook; though he did ask when we first came, is there anything you don't eat? I told him pork. We got pork chops for lunch while he laughed. Good joke, Alberto! Ha ha!

Response from the owner We always appreciate constructive criticism; it is a learning experience. We thank the clients for their feedback. French Louie Caye a very small, unique one-cabana operation; we do not have a staffed office. In order to have a smooth experience for our guests, specific arrival and departure information is critical. Also advance notice of dietary restrictions is necessary since the vacation rental is on a small offshore island. Unfortunately we did not have this. We did provide instructions as to how to find a meeting place (with a sign and contact numbers posted on the door). If we had had a more specific arrival time Ran would have definitely been right there to meet them. We do understand that they were booking “on the run” and this was difficult for them. We sincerely regret the added hassle after a long trip. We consider the comments concerning the caretaker very constructive. It is unacceptable for food preferences to be ignored; and we were unaware that he espouses passionate beliefs that may make our guests uncomfortable. We will address these concerns. We also apologize for the late billing for the airline tickets. This was an error on our part. Again, thank you sharing your thoughts with us. Ran’s wife (“The booking agent”)

I must say French Louie Caye has got to be hands down the most amazing place to vacation !! It is not ment for everyone but we did not need or want fluff or pampering just fun and to explore the sights of the sea while having alone time for our Honeymoon . It was perfect!! We snorkeled every day and some nights, Alberto always took his time with us to show as much as he could find or scare up out of hiding, from Cane Shrimp to Sharks, I loved that he let us see as much as we could take in. I loved it more than anything or anywhere my husband could have swept me off to!! Thank You alberto and Ran I have so many great pictures but for some unknown reason it's not allowing me to share them.
