“Relaxing with Nature and Comfort”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2011

we loved staying in Chalet Switz. As a retired, but active couple we appreciate privacy, nature, quiet...all while having excellent amenities close by. It is only a one mile drive from the top of the mountain on the private, gravel road down to the little village of Little Switzerland, NC. This made dining, book-buying, coffee-drinking, a breeze. We also took pictures of deer on the drive up the gravel road. The road, by the way, is an excellent one...much better than we expected. The chalet itself is a study in efficiency and comfort. It has more space than a couple will ever need. We never felt crowded but always comfortable. Your selection in cookware (Emeril) and china is impeccable. The heavy Ralph Lauren towels and washcloths were also a luxurious touch. The air circulation throughout the chalet was such that we can't imagine a/C ever being needed at that 4000 ft altitude. Almost always a good breeze. Thank you for allowing us to share your home. We will be back. Sincerely, Ken and Carol Parrott

“Perfect Couple's Romantic Getaway”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2011

Our recent mid-June stay at Chalet-Switz was everything we had hoped it would be. Despite its small size, my wife and I never once felt cramped or confined as the chalet makes perfect use of its limited square footage. The historic nature and uniqueness of the chalet was a major selling point in our decision to rent it for the week over other options and, in all honesty, I cannot imagine ever staying anywhere else on future vacations to the area. The home's close proximity to the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway made our many driving excursions all the more pleasurable. The owner has taken great care to even furnish the chalet with such unique touches as several books on the local area and its history and coffee mugs made from local artists. For the same price as a hotel room (perhaps much less, in many cases) we were able to stay somewhere truly special. The bed was comfortable, the Greek tub completely manageable for daily showering/bathing, and our ability to use the kitchen facilities for our daily breakfasts and even a dinner or two allowed us to save money over having to eat out for every single meal. If I were forced to find any criticism whatsoever it would be that the coffee maker was quite small and required my wife and I (both coffee lovers) to brew at least two small pots each morning and there were no laundry facilities available to us, which really wasn't much of a problem for us, but would have been helpful had they been available. Chalet Switz was much more than just a room to crash in after an activity filled day in the mountains of Western NC; staying there was as much a part of our vacation experience as any of the sights we saw or activities we enjoyed. I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to unplug from daily life and have a truly unique and memorable vacation experience when visiting the area. We will almost certainly be repeat guests at some point in the future.

“Unison of art and Nature”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2011

Chalet Switz is a perfect retreat for those who want to experience the beauty of art and nature simultaneously. Of all the places we have stayed, it was the most beautiful. We loved the stone walls, windows, and all of the natural elements all around the Chalet. Being there felt like being in a magical children's book. Views from windows and the woodwork are remarkable. All of the appointments are beautiful and being at the Chalet is peaceful and restorative. If you are one or two, you will love it, too. The location is perfect for Mt.Mitchell, the Linville Gorge, Roan Mountain, Penland, and Wilson Creek.

“A delightful stay at the stone Chalet”

Reviewed 6 Dec 2010

My husband and I spent a week at the Chalet for a leaf-changing getaway. He really chose well when he picked the week, because the colors were phenomenal all along the parkway! Our stay at the Chalet was really such a delight -- it was fantastic to get away from TV and internet and computers! Like the reviewer before me, I was really impressed with our arrival -- soft music playing, bunches of leaves and wildflowers brought in from outside -- such wonderful little touches that really warmed my heart. The Chalet had everything we could ask for! We did all of the cooking for the entire week in the snug little kitchen, and it was fantastic. Laying in bed and looking out at the trees blowing in the windy moonlight -- that was a memory I won't forget! The weather got pretty cold a few nights, and the fireplace really kept the whole house totally snug. I can't imagine staying here with more than two people, but it was definitely perfect for us! Such creative ways to save space -- I love that the dining table is on a fulcrum! Fantastic! Little Switzerland was a bit off the beaten path, but it provided a truly ideal launching point for a week of hiking along the Parkway and over at Grandfather Mountain. Stop by the Minerals Museum and talk to the rangers about some excellent off-the-beaten path hiking opportunities!

“Peaceful Retreat”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2010

This place is absolutely breathtaking! When we first arrived we were welcomed with flowers and peaceful music it was so special. Our first trip up to the chalet was so exciting we just kept going up and up and up! I have a small fear of heights and I really think staying at your place and driving up the gravel road really help conquer those butterflies. We really had the best time! It was so peaceful and relaxing it was exactly what we needed! It's definitely one of those places you just cant wait to show and share with others I would love to stay here again someday soon. My friends and I love to hike and Little Switzerland is a great place to stay. Really feel like you're way up in the clouds and no matter where you are the views are magnificent! Little Switzerland is a great community and its not a bad commute to surrounding towns! Thank you so much for allowing us to stay here the memories will last forever! ~Carrie Manuel

“Beautiful little place atop the blue Ridge!”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2010

My wife and I took our 6 year old with us and drove down from Ohio to Little Switzerland. We found the Chalet easily based on Bettie's directions and enjoyed the beautiful drive up the mountain to get to it. The weather was warm but never uncomfortable and the small fan was enough to keep us cool while we slept even with 3 of us in the bed. The chalet is small but incredibly comfortable and was just what we were looking for. The architecure of this little place was great- simple but well detailed down to speakeasy style window in the custom front door. We had breakfast and even reheated leftovers from previous night dinners for lunch in the kitchen. We used the Chalet as our base for travelling around the Blue Ridge Parkway and it worked great. Spent some evenings in asheville which is about 90 minutes away by the parkway or an hour via I-40. I recommend the parkway- many overlooks to stop off at and take in the view. I drug my telescope along and was very please the first night by the clear and very dark sky. Even caught a glimpse of the milky way which is pretty much impossible to see in NE Ohio. He had lunch in town at the Switzerland cafe which was very good and picked up some raw honey to take home. I would highly recommend Grandfather Mountain in Linville and also the easy hike down to Grassy Creek Falls in Little Switzerland. The next time we want to see the blue Ridge this is where we will be staying.
