Description from owner

Looking for something a little different? Something a little exotic, a little adventurous, but still with that certain amount of luxury? Welcome to Casa Selva, The Jungle House.

Set in the progressive, boutique community of Balcones de Majagual, Casa Selva is open air design and living at it’s finest. Located 12km from the lovely town of San Juan del Sur, Casa Selva was designed by the renowned architect Matthew Faulkner (Morgan’s Rock Eco-Lodge) and represents some of the most luxurious, progressively ecologically friendly accommodations in San juan del Sur. This private villa is perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean, allowing for both stunning water and jungle views . Enjoy daily visits from the communities local troop of friendly howler monkeys, and in the winter months watch humpback whale breaching from the front deck as they are arriving in the warm waters of the Nicaraguan Pacific to nurse their young.. Being nestled in one of Central America’s largest private wildlife corridors, sightings of sloths, parakeets, iguanas, margays and hummingbirds are common occurrences for guests at Casa Selva.

Casa Selva is more than a rental unit, it is in fact, us, the owners, part time home. As a result, we ensure it is always well stocked and maintained, and lacks that cold, rental space feeling. Above all, Casa Selva is our home, and we are delighted to share it with you in our absence.

Casa Selva is a 2 bedroom, 2 1/4 bathroom home boosting high ceilings, cool polished concrete floors, and a state of the art screen system that allows for fresh air to flow through the home constantly. Both large bedrooms contain beautiful stone, en-suite bathrooms, large storage spaces, and views of either the ocean or jungle. In keeping with our eco-consciousness, the piping hot water in both bathrooms is heated by the sun with our solar hot water system. Both bedrooms rooms are well appointed with fine linens, pillows and comfortable beds.

Attention to detail such as large Japanese style sliding doors, unique wood work (all obtained from hurricane felled trees and sustainable timber) stone accents, professional photography and decor give the home a serene and peaceful feel, perfect for relaxation, honeymoons, or a place to rest after a long day of surfing. Casa Selva provides you with the essential modern conveniences such Wi-fi available in the home and on the grounds, flat screen tv, dvd, video library and comfortable furniture from Simplemente Maderas. Boundaries between indoors and outdoors blend when sliding walls in the living room open to a large patio with ocean and jungle views.

A comfortable work space with desk is provided for your use, making working from the home easy and stress free. Our brand new battery-backup system provides silent power for the house even during Nicaragua's frequent, brief power outages, allowing you to work uninterrupted during these times.

As devoted foodies, the we make sure the kitchen is stocked with everything one would need to make a gourmet meal. Gas range, pots, pans, hand mixer, magic bullet, spices, large bowls, and dishes and cutlery for eight people. A coffee maker, french press, stove top espresso maker and coffee grinder allow you to enjoy your cup of world class Nicaraguan coffee whatever way you prefer. A traditional north american style propane BBQ is available for your use, as well as all the necessary BBQ equipment.

Located just outside the home is the incredible 15 meter infinity pool boasting views of the jungle and ocean. The perfect place to watch the sunset over the pacific in the cool, comfortable pool waters.

Casa Selva is located either a short 15 minute walk or short 5 minute drive down the private road to some of the finest beaches in southern Nicaragua, Playa Maderas, Playa Majagual and Playones. There are surf board rentals, and a small selection of cafes to make your day at the beach both comfortable and enjoyable.

An English and Spanish speaking “meet and greet” is included in the cost of rental. Our host can help you arrange a variety of activities in the area including zip ling, horse back riding, boat cruises, surf lessons, professional onsite massages, and spanish lessons. This home also enjoys the benefits of secure private parking and 24 hour security in a locked, gated community. Cleaning and pool service is included.

A four wheel drive vehicle high clearance vehicle is is required for accessing not only Casa Selva, but the majority of the beaches north and south of San Juan del Sur. We are located 12km from town on country dirt roads, and seeing as though the house is perched on a hill from the main road a 4 x 4 vehicle will make your stay not only easier, but more fun as you enjoy these beautiful country roads. Let us help you arrange a vehicle in town with one of our contacts at a discounted rate!

Very Good

“Loved it!”

Reviewed 30 Mar 2014

I can say without reservation that Casa Selva met all our needs, exceeded our already high expectations, and provided us with one of the highlights of our time in this amazing country. Laura and Joel were spot on with their recommendations, and a special thanks to Gabriela and Shalyn who oriented us to town (and the bakery!). The house, which looks pretty amazing here, is actually an exceptional example of architecture designed for the climate and local geography and is perfect for 4-5 people. There is great attention to detail. Cleanliness is unparalleled. On site managers were unobtrusive and helpful. The infinity pool is maintained daily and we used it every morning and evening. Take a walk in the evening and take in the stars. Great to just kick back, swim locally, enjoy the town or learn to surf on nearby beaches, you will have the time of your life.

Response from the owner And we LOVED Mike and his family! What great guests- they even fixed a lamp for us during their stay! Thank you for taking the time to write such a great review for us, and we are thrilled that you loved Casa Selva as much as we do- it's a special spot! Come back soon!

“It was an amazing time!”

We were on our honeymoon and wanted a place where we can relax and enjoy. Staying at Casa Selva delivered and then some. On our stay, we had all of the conveniences such as a full baths, spacious bedrooms and living areas, cleaning services, security, bbq, and a well equipped kitchen, right down to all the necessary spices to cook various cuisines. The best feature was the amazing views and gorgeous sunsets. Close to town and beaches. Highly recommend staying at Casa Selva.

“Great Getaway”

Reviewed 10 Jun 2012

Four of us stayed at Casa Selva for two weeks in early May. Everything was pretty great. Amazing views, beaches, and wildlife. We were all there to relax and do as little as possible and that was definitely achieved. Spent most of our time in the house or on the surrounding beaches enjoying the wonderful ocean water. The pool was a great place for a cocktail and a dip in the evening. Besides a few scorpion and power mishaps the house was clean, well maintained, and the 24-hour staff was always there to help. A great place if you're looking for something out of the way and quiet for your vacation. Thanks Joel and Laura!

“exotic and fun”

stayed at casa selva for 1 week. unforgettable experience. the house is built archetecturally in harmony with its surroundings and is lovely; as was the pool. Mandy, our concierge, Don Carlos, our watchman, and Fabiola, our cook for 1 night, were great. local beaches are the main draw as well as the small beach town of San Juan Del Sur. Surprising the number of american/Canadian ex-pats in town. If you like zip-lining, Da Flying Frog was better than the one we did in Hawaii. this is nature so do remember to bring mosquito repellent and binoculars. Also, be ready to see any number of small creatures from monkeys to land crabs. note: we visited toward the end of the dry season, so the jungle valley was dry. for a more lush view, I would recommend staying more toward the beginning of the dry season. renting a 4x4 is a must as they have dirt roads and the house is about 25min to town. Thank you, Joel and Laura for a memorable vacation.

Response from the owner Alma- thank you for being such a wonderful guest. Laura and i are thrilled you enjoyed your time at Casa Selva as much as we do. And what great pics! Happy travels. J & L

“An extraordinary adventure”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2011

My adult son and I had the pleasure of living in the jungle of Nicaragua, in Casa Selva, for 7 weeks. The experience will be remembered for a lifetime. The length of the stay enabled us to make Casa Selva our home, and we became intimately familiar with life in the jungle from a place of comfort! The house is gorgeous, the pictures are 100% true. The home is spaceous, impeccably clean and well kept, and provided the conveniences of very important items like several styles of coffee pots, a well-equipped kitchen (pots and pans, dishes and small appliances), and two types of filtered water. The fridge was large enough for us to stock a weeks worth of groceries, no problem. The house is well screened (many windows) and it feels as though you are living outside ... the sounds of the jungle are with you in the comfort of your bedroom! The monkey sounds became an expected and familiar part of every morning, as did the parakeets' squabbles. The lightning and thunder events could be watched from the living room, and the sunsets were spectacular. The other conveniences were much appreciated ... back up power, WiFi, hot showers, a cool swimming pool after a hike back from the beach! The cleaning service was amazing, laundry service too. The location was isolated enough to feel apart from civilization (a welcome break, especially for two writers), but close enough to Sjds to enjoy the conveniences of grocery stores and restaurants. We rented a vehicle for the first 2 weeks, and then opted to have a driver/4x4 vehicle pick us up and drive us to town for our supplies once a week. Thank you so much, Casa Selva, for providing us an amazing home base for our jungle experience!

Response from the owner Shelley, it was a pleasure having you and your son at Casa Selva. We felt like our home was a home during your stay! Thank-you for your emails and updates while you were there, and we truly hope to have you return again in the future!

“Truely Wonderful Experience”

Reviewed 5 May 2011

Casa Selva was a spectacular get away in an absolutely beautiful part of Nicaragua. The house is at the top of a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean. About a mile away is a very private beach with a wonderful cabana. The beach is gorgeous and is a short walk north from Playa Medera, one of the best surfing beaches on the Nicaraguan Pacific Coast. San Juan Del Sur is a 20 minute SUV ride down the mountain and we enjoyed several dinners there. The food was outstanding and the town was very entertaining since it was spring break there and they had about 50,000 more people in town that normal. We really enjoyed the wildlife including the monkeys, birds, and iguanas. The monkeys come very close to the house and are so entertaining to watch. The roads are not good so you need a 4 wheel drive to get around. Casa Selva is in a gated community and there is security always nearby. We felt very secure and the guards were all very helpful and friendly. Great trip and we would absolutely stay at Casa Selva if we have a chance to visit Nicaragua again.

“Everything I'd Want in The Perfect Vacation Spot”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2011

Of all the places I've visited in various countries, Casa Selva in Nicaragua most perfectly captures everything I'd want in the perfect vacation spot. From the property, its a quick drive to San Juan Del Sur, a charming tourist town with loads to do (eat, drink, shop, swim etc). The property is also a few minutes walk from the most gorgeous tranquil beach, and a quick drive to one of the area's best surfing beaches. After a fun-filled adventurous day, the house itself is truly a fairytale to come back to. Every detail inside is immaculate and gorgeous, with impeccable style, while remaining indulgently comfortable at the same time. The views are spectacular and the sunsets are not to be missed. Being situated on the ridge, in the middle of so much nature was equal parts thrilling (saw monkeys!) and peaceful. The pool is fabulous and we spent many hours kicking back in the sun, swimming. The extra special added perks are that the owners are super wonderful and were a big help in answering all my questions. In addition, there was a consierge available to help me plan and make reservations. The onsite staff were wonderful as well and we loved seeing them each day and saying hello. In short, Casa Selva will exceed your every expectation. It certainly exceeded mine!

“Best honeymoon ever!!!”

Reviewed 11 Mar 2011

My wife and I just got back from staying at Casa Selva. We had such an amazing time there and fell in love with the house instantly! We've been to several all inclusives but this was the best trip by far! We rented a 4x4 to get back and forth to town-which we would recommend. San Juan is a friendly little town, full of Central american culture and even though we didn't speak a lot of Spanish we were able to get by. The sunsets were breath-taking, which we enjoyed from the beach and from the house. The howling monkeys had us up earlier in the morning which was great because we didn't want to miss anything! We did some surfing at Managua beach (first time ever), the zipline canopy tour and went for a tour with our guide Francisco to Grenada to see the active volcano (amazing!!) and to check out the local market (souveniers etc.) We also went to El Gato Negro the local coffee shop in town and picked up some coffee beans for our morning coffee. The photos of the house are accurate. It was really refreshing to feel the breeze flowing through the house and the concrete helps to keep the house cool. The guards were friendly and helpful although most of them only spoke Spanish "no problemo" we used our trusty spanish dictionary which was at the house. All-in-all the best trip ever. Very safe and a great return for your dollar! Go check it out!!

Response from the owner Ladies, It was a treat to assist you in your first off resort vacation, and we are thrilled it was everything you dreamed it to be! We look forward to having you return in the future. As for the early morning monkey wake-ups, they just don't seem to understand the art of sleeping in! Wonderful working with you both on making your honeymoon special.

“Awesome stay”

Reviewed 27 Feb 2011

My girlfriend and my recent stay at Casa Selva was absolutely amazing. I was so excited to take my first trip to Nicaragua and the owners answered all our questions and helped us in so many ways. This house is straight out of architectural digest with the views of the ocean from the house that are picture perfect and sunsets that are stunning. For me, one of the best parts of the stay was the proximity of the beaches and that i had a choice of 3 to go to each offering a different waters. There is a beach with waters great for swimming, another with smaller waves for fun and one with huge waves for surfing. I finally learned how to surf and boogie board. The infinity pool at Casa Salva was also a bonus, it was so nice to wake up and take a dip in the pool, relax, while watching monkeys swinging in the trees around us. And zipling in town was amazing too. We rented 2 vehicles during our stay in Nicaragua. We got ourselves a Hilux from Dollar to explore the north of the country and switched over to the landcruiser when we got to the house. These landcruisers are fantastic, not much luxury, but great fun on those dirt roads around the house. Awesome time and I can't wait to go back.

“Nicaragua at its finest”

Reviewed 22 Jan 2011

Casa Selva was a dream home and was a perfect place to spend a vacation. We were in walking distance to the some of the best beaches for surfing and for relaxing. The house was a perfect retreat away from urban chaos. In the heat of the day, the house stayed cool because of the breeze that flowed through. Monkeys greeted us in the morning and entertained during dinner and the rooms were modern and spacious. Everything that we needed was at the house - everything from a great view to spices for cooking. We loved the fact that Balcones is ecologically conscious and felt a little more comfortable knowing that our footprint in Nicaragua was smaller than when staying at a resort. Laura and Joel went above and beyond to help us prepare for our trip and helped us make the most of the area. San Juan del Sur is a cute town with all the amenities needed... café, grocery store, spas, tour centers, restaurants, market with fruit, vegetables and fish, and of course a beach. I loved being secluded in the jungle, but not being completely isolated from civilization. If you're looking for a dream home vacation, you've got the right place!
