“Heavenly haven”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2013

I was one of the party of 12 that stayed in Galen's wonderfully stylish house. The villa exceeded my expectations on all fronts. Perched high up on a hill, the spectacular views from just about every vantage point in the house are well worth the climb. The house is super equipped with anything a family could possibly need for a comfortable, relaxed holiday. Special mention to Elena for her delicious meals and attention to detail in the running of the house and Tsanko who is a wonderful source of local knowledge and experience and a lovely warm and engaging energy to have around.   Hydra itself is a magnificent island with some lovely rock and platform beaches nearby to the villa. A must do lunch or dinner is Kodylenia's Taverna just on the hill as you enter into the little port of Kamini. Stop in for a swim off the platform on your way to and from lunch!  Tips:  Donkeys transfer luggage to and from the villa - cost is approx. 15 to 20 euro per donkey per way. Tsanko will organise and negotiate this. Food and drink (inc. water) should definitely be ordered and delivered ahead of arrival - particularly basics like bread, butter, cereal, eggs and perhaps supplies for the first meal depending on the time of arrival. There are fabulous tavernas in the main port and Kamini but require a steep walk to and from.  This house is truly fabulous for a family get together or group of friends and is especially great for a holiday with the children. Once you arrive you wonder why you would ever need to leave!

“The perfect place to stay”

We were a party of 12 staying at Galen's villa at the beginning of our three weeks in Greece. We were 6 adults and 6 children ranging from 18 to 6 years. The great thing about this villa is that it appealed to all ages. It's spacious, cool and decorated in very attractive white tones. There's plenty of space to find solitude, if that's what you want. Children can enjoy the pool and lounge room while adults can escape to one of the many terraces (with spectacular views) or retreat to their delightful cool bedrooms - all with ensuites. The large dining table outside is big enough to seat 12 and made the perfect setting for our long leisurely meals. It's hard to find fault with this villa - it sits high above the port of Hydra and is a 5 minute walk down (15 minutes back up!) to a delightful beach for swimming, sun baking etc. The staff, Elena and Tsanko were lovely, friendly and keen to accommodate any requests we had. Elena's a fabulous cook and we enjoyed all her delicious dishes. At the end of our time in Greece everyone was asked 'if you could be anywhere right now, where would you choose?' Each person said, Galen's villa on Hydra!

“An amazing villa on Hydra”

We had an amazing week on Hydra with our three children and another family with one child. My return to Hydra after almost 20 years was an amazing adventure, but the real treat of our vacation was staying at this villa. The pool was a glorious treat after our hike up the hill. The kids spent hours in the pool! The home is beautifully decorated and everyone window has a spectacular view. Each morning we awoke to a scrumptious breakfast prepared for us by our smiling Elena. We ate outside overlooking the breathtaking view of the sea. Every question and arrangement needed was organized by our wonderful Tsanko. The grand piano was perfect for evenings of music and fun with all our kids. Magical touch! Nothing could have been more perfect for our one week stay on Hydra with four kids. Thank you Thank you. We will return!!!

“A dream-like villa on the hill.”

Our trip was unusual in that we showed up in January and didn't leave until april. We wanted to spend the winter somewhere in the Mediterranean, somewhere away from just another New York winter, but what we experienced while staying in this home was far beyond what fantasies for this trip were made of. The house itself is beautiful, well appointed and supremely comfortable. It has a kitchen full of everything. From espresso machine to a meat hammer. We started boiling eggs just to use the egg slicer. There are dozens of Dvds for the nights we stayed in and a wonderful selection of books for nearly every type of reader. Some days were bit of a war; see the beautiful Hydra morning from the roof deck or bedroom balcony, or stay wrapped in the cloud-like bed. Because of the length of our trip we saw a little bit of all the types of weather that come blowing through Hydra, and while I know most people are looking at this place for a summer rental, I can say from experience that this house handles it all extremely well. On the rainy days we stayed warm and dry and on the beautiful day of sun and heat we opened all the doors and the villa transformed into a breezy, cool paradise. The only rival to the comfort of this house is the kindness of the people associated with it. Both Elena, who cleaned a few days a week and kept us all smiling, and Yannis, without whom we might have not experienced one tenth of the island as we did, were exceptional people. The kindness and generosity of these two was a trait we found in the people all over the island, but never in such unwavering abundance as with Elena and Yannis. While most might come to this island for the swimming, I can't recommend the beautiful hikes through the hills and up to the monasteries enough. If you have the opportunity to stay here, there shouldn't even been a decision to make. Put on some comfortable shoes, get out your kombolói, and make your way to rare, wild and magical place.

“a life-altering vacation - heaven on earth!”

This beautiful villa on the top of Hydra's rugged terrain could not have been more fantastic! - Each of the suites had an individual character of itself - the kitchen was fully equipped and professionally functional. Choice of beaches more accessible than staying in the port of Hydra. The staff was gracious, competent and helpful on all matters. We put together a group of artist friends, and the 10 of us just had a blast enjoying the pool, playing the piano and cooking together. The weather was just perfect and the climate at the house is amazing - perfect combination of shade and sun, and the view from our bedroom was showered with beautiful sunsets. We're pretty sured that one of our marriages was saved and rejuvenated during this trip!!! I highly recommend this experience to anybody who wants the best in luxury, but desires the independence of villa life!

“The most wonderful villa”

As a group, we've stayed in first-class villas in Tuscany, Provence, Catalonia and elsewhere. None of the others can compare to this magnificent property. The villa is elegantly yet comfortably furnished throughout. Each of the bedrooms is lovely and private. The shared spaces are ideal for spending time together -- or quietly alone. And then, of course, there's the fantastic pool, carved into the native rock, surrounded by fragrant flowers, and overlooking the homes far below and the sea just beyond. The villa was immaculately kept, spotless throughout, and the service -- we still miss those breakfasts! -- was excellent in every way. We reminisce often about our trip to Hydra, and we look forward to visiting again. When we do, we will no doubt stay in this villa, even if means choosing a different week to travel.

We are accustomed to an extremely high standard when we travel. We travel frequently with our 4 children, so we want comfort and ease but not at the expense of a top shelf experience. This house on Hydra met all of my expectations and then some! It is perfectly positioned to take in the views yet takes you away from the tourist crowds. Daily housekeeping and meals prepared by a lovely young woman who made us feel completely comfortable Worth every Euro
