“Heavenly surroundings but poor home comforts”
Upon arrival at the airport, there was NO ADDRESS nor were there any directions/map to tell me where the house was, and this was at night. eventually after 6/7 phone calls I had to ask the caretaker to meet me to show me where to go. Not a good start. The house situated over looking a beautiful valley, the highlight of the house by far. The bed was old and uncomfortable, sheets and towels were very well worn, the kitchen had the most basic of equipment, not even that, no directions on how to use the cooker ( ok if your familiar with this type) but plenty of signs around saying what NOT TO DO. This could potentially be a great place but for the money paid, the quality of accomodation wasn't there! Disappointing! I wish I'd have taken photos to show now. I was in desperate need of this holiday, and I just feel totally let down by the house.
Response from the manager This was an unfortunate circumstance. I remember this guest very well. He arrived extremely late at night, after flying in from overseas. Very tired, and a foreigner arriving late on an island with very few street lights. He arrived without his check in directions, which included detailed directions to the house, the house address, the lockbox code. We've check our records and we know that his girlfriend confirmed their receipt of the directions. Yes indeed, a bad start for this poor guy. A comfortable bed is subjective. Other recent guests have told us the bed is very comfortable. Once he was in the house he never called us again. If he was disappointed he could have and should have called us. He knew how to get hold of me, yes, he called me 6 or 7 times the night he arrived. I tried to direct him to the house over the phone - but he was simply too exhausted, and ultimately I met him and led him to the house. We're so sorry he had difficulties with the house. Our one goal is to make sure our guests have a good vacation.
“Gorgeous mountain views”
We loved this house and it's location tucked up the road past Hanalei in a private jungle paradise. Nice screened in lanai, comfy bed and nice bath. There is one major downside which is why we don't give it 5 stars. There is at least one hunting dog kennel near the property and the sound of barking dogs serenades you throughout the day. Sometimes even at night. We didn't mind the roosters, frogs, and crickets, but if you are a light sleeper don't stay here. The dogs barked at us when we were in the garden and made spending any time there unpleasant. It is such a shame in an otherwise idyllic setting.
Response from the manager Thank you for the very nice comments about the house, We also love this house and are happy when our guests enjoy it. We apologize that the neighbors dogs bothered you. They belong to the Hawaiian family that has a taro patch on the far side of the water from our property, and the family uses the dogs for hunting. Sometimes they are mostly quiet and at other times, especially when they are being fed, they bark excitedly. We have spoken with our neighbors many times about keeping them quiet, or possibly having fewer dogs. Our neighbors are nice and apologize, but hunting is a way of life for them-so it is difficult for them to understand why this is a problem. We respect them and their culture and will continue working to find solutions for the dog barking. From the Kuraoka family
Best ever on the North coast. Private. Beautiful. Close to all Hanalei + Best Beaches + Adventures. Strong "10," hope to return! Thanks David and Carol for your hospitality (nice to meet you for a few short minutes; even better to see David's artwork in the house and on the grounds). ps. (re: reports of barking; not a prob for me... wore earplugs to sleep, but prob not a requirement... something you might want to consider anywhere on the island, with a nod to the rooster population) pps. Na Pali properties... Excellent service!
“beautiful house and view, horrible barking dogs”
This rental is a very nice house and the view is amazing. However, from 8am-4am there are tons of barking dogs that can be heard up the street. I am not talking one or two dogs, I am talking 40 or so dogs. Even with earplugs they can be clearly heard. I think in the 8 days we stayed i got about 20 hours of sleep total. Do yourself a favor and rent a different property! I will never stay at this rental again, and in fact, if I thought I could get a refund, i would. It pretty much put a huge damper on our vacation.
“Not excellent... One reason why”
I read the reviews about this house before booking it. Most reports were accurate: -The scenery is unmatched; it is absolutely breathtaking! Could anyplace offer more beauty? - The house is open, clean, well designed, and completely private... Everything you could hope for. I read the one review that mentioned dogs barking, and I figured I could handle one or two unhappy dogs. I figured they were exaggerating. Be warned... It was worse that I could possibly imagine. There are two different packs of hunting dogs kept on wither side of the house, which don't just bark, but they bark all morning and all evening. It sounded as if each pack wet tearing themselves apart. Just as you thought it couldn't get worse, they took it to another level. It was horrifying. I am shocked that only one review mentioned it. It is a shame, and I know the rental company cannot help how the neighbors live, but that little detail really, truly is unbearable. The dogs eventually settle down, but you may want to turn on a notice machine or turn off the hearing aid, as you never know when one bark will start them entire pack off again. The location to the beaches, to the Na Pali trail, to town, was perfect. I cannot express enough how the place was such a dream... Except for those dogs.
We loved this house! It's in a great location just outside Hanalei. Very clean and comfortable. Nice layout with all new amenities. The views are outstanding and the screened in porch is awesome! We didnt want to leave and would definitely stay here again.
“Comfortable but noisy”
The property was clean, very comfortable, and the garden was gorgeous. We enjoyed the screened lanai with hammock. There is a kennel of hunting dogs on the neighboring property who barked nearly constantly. We have dogs ourselves at home, so they didn't particularly bother us and we would probably stay here again. The dogs were noisy enough, however, that the nearly constant cacophony may drive non-dog people crazy. The dogs barked literally at all hours of the day and night. Between them and the roosters crowing at 3 a.m. it was interesting, to say the least. The kitchen could have been better equipped and the bed was not particularly comfortable, but water pressure was good and extras like snorkel gear, beach chairs and barbq were appreciated.
“"Our Most Favorite..."”
Beyond our expectations! We've been coming to Hawaii for over 10 years, and have spent time at all of the Islands; Kauai is by far our most favorite island - the North Shore being our most favorite area. We've stayed at one of the owners other properties a few years back, right up the road from this location and just loved being away from it all. The last time we were in Kauai we checked out this location on the housekeeper's recommendation, and had decided right then that we would be staying here the next time we came back to the island. While the "Artists Cottage" that we had stayed at last time was very nice, this one, "Nohonani" ,blew us away! Extremely private, well appointed, and clean, the grounds and the views were beyond compare; a cross between Shangri-La and Jurassic park! The fruit trees, just about every variety of Palm, Orchids, etc. were the icing on the cake...when can we move in permanently?!? We love this area, being close to Tunnels beach and Lumaha'i beach (our favorite), and just 4 miles to our favorite little town of Hanalei with our most favorite restaurant - Post Card Cafe. Waking up to the stunning views of the mountains in the distance out of the sliding glass doors in the bedroom, and then having breakfast on the screened in lanai while gazing out over the property below was only the beginning of each of our awe inspiring days in paradise. A lazy day in the hammock on the lanai while the rain trickled down outside was just as nice as a bright and sunny day. The owners Carol and David are a pleasure to work with, as was the property management company, Na Pali Properties. Oh and yes...there are barking dogs, but with a property this outstanding, it was worth dealing with a little barking (OK...a lot of barking, we actually found it humorous the first night like someone was punking us!) but ear plugs easily solved that problem, and it would not stop us from staying here again in the future...seriously, when can we move in permanently!?!
“My idea of pardise”
Was looking for a place to stay on the North Shore so as not to fight the traffic getting around the island. Outside of Princeville, I found the choices to be pretty limited. Took a chance on this rental despite the dog warnings. As most other reviewers found, the location is absolutely amazing. The house itself is comfortable, very nicely decorated and well equipped. After settling into this house for awhile you can start to appreciate what a unique location it is and how fortunate it is to get an opportunity to stay there. The house has a certain vibe that slowly grows on you. The view from the lanai is absolutely sublime. It constantly changes depending on the time of day and the movement of the clouds. What an experience to wake up and watch the show as the sun fills the valley while having your morning coffee. Then continue your perfect day with a short drive to Napali or one of the North shore beaches before the crowds show up. And the dogs - yes they are there and they will let you know it from time to time. When we finished up our Kauai stay at a 'resort' in Poipu I can't tell you how much I missed those barking dogs.
“Beautiful setting, beautiful home, noisy dogs and chickens!”
This is a lovely, clean, comfortable home in a lush garden setting. Terrific views of the forest and mountains. Great lanai (screened) with big dining table. Good location, close to Tunnels Beach, away from crowds. Noisy!!! We could accept and get used to the incessant roosters (they are everywhere on the island). But we had a harder time with the packs of barking dogs. There are 2 packs of hunting dogs nearby. They bark, yelp and howl almost constantly, day and night, and mar the serenity of this otherwise gorgeous place. Also, Na Pali Properties makes a big deal of security. In writing, it instructs renters to hide all valuables, even when you are sleeping in the home. But when we arrived, the back door lock was broken and the front door deadbolt could not be locked when we were in the house, so we had to sleep with a chair propped under the door handle with one eye open. Or, more often, two eyes open because of the damned dogs. Really, I think Na Pali Properties has an obligation to either deal with the neighbors' dogs or inform renters of the noise in advance. But they did fix the front door deadbolt.
