“Exactly what we were looking for!”
My husband and I recently stayed at Big Rock for a week in mid February 2014. We have tried to take 1 dive trip/yr the last few years and this year we chose Bay Islands. Last year we took our toddler and parents on a trip, but this year we decided to leave them all at home and spend some quality time together. The Big Rock was perfect for that. All of our transfers on our way to and from went perfectly well. The house was set up perfectly for everything we needed and Rusty and Hanz were incedibly helpful in making sure we had what we needed and great company as well. The minute we mentioned that the kitchen knives were a little dull, Mario was all over getting them sharpened, etc. The only complaint about the house was maybe the kitchen was too small, as my husband and I often like to cook together. Also we had some issues with the internet connection, but I only say that becuase I wanted to check in with the family - otherwise I enjoyed the seclusion! Diving with Rusty and Hanz was very laid back and a joy. I was so thankful to not be on a crowded boat. The dives were all beautiful and Hanz was great about pointing out the little things we would have otherwise missed. I think the highlight though, has to be that dock. There couldn't be a better place to relax. We took advantage of a few snorkels and shore dives from the dock, but mostly just kicked back with some Salva Vida's (which we believe to be the best local beer we've had on a dive trip yet!). In summary, I highly recommend the Big Rock for anyone looking for a great deal on a personalized dive vacation, and also looking to avoid any kind of tourist crowd. I hear they are expanding the property for slightly larger groups - so it could be a great option for a family vacation as well. Ps - The book collection is excellent, you might not want to bring a book along because you'll want to read a lot of the books in house!
What's not to like about having a personal dive master and boat captain to explore the beautiful reefs of Utila? Our experience at Big Rock was fantastic. The house is very comfortable and despite the tiny kitchen we were able to create magnificent meals with the local food. The bed was heavenly and made for a great night's sleep. Mario and his family are incredibly friendly and they go out of their way to keep the grounds clean and are available to help anytime (be sure to take daughter Cindy snorkeling, she's a little fish but likes a buddy in the water). Hans and Rusty (dive master and boat captain) really made the trip for us - they are a couple of characters but very nice guys and a lot of fun to spend time with (when you're out diving together every day, that matters!). The reef right in front of the house is fun to explore - made for a perfect afternoon snorkel after the boys dropped us back at Big Rock. Last but not least great neighbors just a few 100 yards away - lovely people and a lot of fun if you wish to socialize a bit, yet they are not at all intrusive. Their dogs are friendly and a lot of fun to have around. I guess the best review of all is to say that you will return ... we are already contemplating a second visit in april of next year. Ps: The one thing you must prepare yourself for at Big Rock are the sand flies - they are prolific on the island but you can easily manage their impact. Skin So Soft Sunscreen with Bug Guard and long pants/long sleeve shirt and you'll be set.
“The location... and the help is outstanding!”
My wife and I have hoped for a long time to stay at Big Rock and the Big Chance finally arrived. It was everything we had hoped for and more.To start with, when one reads about it, they get a little concerned that it might be too remote. It is just remote enough. Rarely anyone on the beach but a great resort within easy walking distance down the beach with a bar, food and friendly places. The diving right off the dock is great and the boat driver Rusty and the dive master Hans are very efficient. The equipment is nearly new and Hans works on it himself. The owner is extremely helpful and answers emails immediately. And do contact Cafe Lola's at the end of the island for one of the most unique dinners or lunches you have ever experienced. They are french, pick you up and have the best food and romantic location you can imagine.
“Amazing Honeymoon Getaway”
My husband and I selected the Big Rock Cabana as our honeymoon destination and could not have been more happy with our choice! We fell in love with everything about the island. The Cabana has all the comforts of home and is a really clean and wonderful place to stay. The ocean is so close and it lulls you to sleep every night. All of the staff members are amazing to work with! Rusty will show you anything you want to see on the island and is great fun to spend time with. We rented a 4-wheeler to go mudding and went all over the island, it was great fun! Though it isn't your typical commercial destination, that is what makes it so amazing and island has so much to offer. Big Rock is a truly wonderful place and Utila will steal your heart!
Stayed at Big Rock for 8 days in March. What a place!! We had a wonderful trip. I have to compliment Trey on his team's arrangements! There was not even a single glitch. Even though there was a very laid back atmosphere, everything happened at the arranged times and nothing ever seemed to be too much trouble for anybody. We loved the cabana, the crow's nest, the diving, snorkeling, salva vidas and the team. From Mario that kept an eye on everything to Rusty and Hans with their patience with the kids and andy with his arrangements for pick up etc. Our children (10 & 13) got to do their Junior Open Water certification with Hans - they were really nervous to start off with, but he got them comfortable in the water with playing frisbee underwater and all different activities. Hans and Rusty made it even more memorable and it felt like leaving family behind when we left at the end of the week. Can't wait till next year to return to Utila and hopefully Big Rock.
“Paradise can be that close!”
Definitely the best vacation we ever had! Everything was perfect for relaxing and enjoying ourselves: a cozy cabana with all comfort, a lonesome and beautiful white sand beach right in the front yard, warm ocean-water, great snorkeling... every day anew we were absolutely amazed that we may have this on our own. By walking along the south and east side coast of the island, we were able to verify that the Big Rock is the most beautiful spot. No other vacation rental has such a white sand beach and fantastic snorkeling possibilities right out front.
Response from the owner Thanks Lara. We are thrilled that you both had a great time. Hope you'll come back to see us soon! Trey
“Best Location on Utila - everything you want in your front yard.”
If you're looking for the perfect, secluded island getaway, this is the spot. A cozy cabana right on the white sand beach, world class snorkeling and diving right out front. This combined with the dock and expansive dock house for lounging all day long. Plus no one to bother you, with Captain Rusty and his boat at your disposal (or not at all if that's what you want). Rumor has it there's great diving all around the island, but we felt it best to stay put and enjoy our private world.
Response from the owner Thanks for the kind words Eric. Thrilled that you enjoyed the beauty of Big Rock. We look forward to having you again.
“The best vacation of my life... amazing.”
I can say with no hesitation that the week I spent at Big Rock was one of the best weeks I have ever had. Everything was just as it was depicted and the weather and scuba were beyond amazing. Trey set everything up for us and our trip and stay were perfect. The cabana was amazing - clean, spacious, beautiful - everything you needed and then some. My two girlfriends and I went down for a girls weekend and had a blast. We rented the boat, captain and dive master for the week and it was worth every penny. We were able to dive the best spots on the island, swim with dolphins, explore the Haliburton, and enjoy amazing fiestas in the afternoon after diving. Our Dive Master, Bell, was amazing. She was patient and showed us everything she could find - she even took us night diving off of the shore in front of Big Rock. Rusty, the boat captain, is tremendous. He was always helping to make our stay the best it could be! During our stay, the waters were calm in the morning, perfect for diving and the trade winds picked up in the afternoon, perfect for snorkle or sitting in the hammocks in the Crow's Nest. I can promise you that if you choose to come here, you will only regret that you couldn't stay longer. The dock is perfect! As a matter of fact, if I didn't turn over multiple times in the night, I would not have gone inside. If you want to have a "night out" you can walk just down the beach to Utopia and have a drink and a meal - just be sure to call ahead for reservations! All in all, it was amazing, spectacular, easy and a trip I will not forget. I can't wait to come back, but next time for a two week visit at least!
“Best spot on the south shore of Utila”
We spent the first week of april at Big Rock which started with a snow storm delaying us over an hour. Connecting in Miami and then San Pedro Sula, we were going to be cutting our connections close. I was able to stay in contact with Trey (Big Rock's owner), and although we didn't need to change any plans, Trey's communication was tremendous allowing us to come up with backup plans in case we ran into trouble, which was reassuring during a stressful time. Once we arrived in Utila, everything went exactly as planned. Since we weren't exactly sure what to expect in regard to groceries we decided we should try and shop on our own instead of taking advantage of having Trey and his men stock the cabana for us. The grocery selection was perfectly reasonable, and if we ever return (which is likely), I'm confident that having the cabana provisioned ahead of time is perfectly acceptable. Big rock is exactly as described. The cabana is private, clean, and featured everything we needed. The bathroom and shower were to us standards (even the water pressure). The bedroom was comfortable. The a/C is not totally necessary and it is possible to sleep comfortably for the week with minimal use. We used it 2-3 nights that were particularly warm. The grounds are well kept, and there are a few friendly dogs (we loved Olie!) owned by nearby residents and the caretaker on the property to keep you company. We had little problems with bugs, but the trade winds were strong during our stay. While we were there, my girlfriend got here open water cert as part of our diving. Hans was amazing! He is a great Dive Master/instructor. I don't think a person could have a better cert experience than my girlfriend did. Having our own boat to dive off was awesome. We dove when we wanted, where we wanted, and rarely saw anyone else underwater. It was a truly private experience. We fell in love with Utila, and the experience at Big Rock was by far my best vacation.
Big Rock was absolutely amazing! The crew was fabulous and a ton of fun. And the island was absolutely beautiful. The sand flies were a bit of a problem but it is all worth it in the end. I would highly recommend Big Rock if you truly want a romantic getaway just for two but if you want to be close to things, this isn't the place. It was so nice to just be able to sit on the deck, read, have a drink and relax!
