“A welcoming retreat space”
I stayed at the cottage for two separate weeks in august and September 2012. I loved the space, having my own room when sharing with a friend, using the small but efficient kitchen, and being in a location that made it easy to get to shopping and access the bus and train to get downtown. The cottage was well appointed, linens were lovely...my only concern was the kitchen chairs were too low for the height of the table. I appreciated the wide variety of eateries and take out places that are available in the neighbourhood. My suggestions are to make WiFi available, and to create a binder of 'Things to Know When Staying at Jean Eileen', such as how very close one is to a grocery store and that it stays open to midnight, where one can go in the neighbourhood to access WiFi, the Bottle Shop, and so on.
“Home away from home down under”
I am from Canada and have travelled extensively. I much prefer a rental to a hotel so have stayed in several in varied locations. I stayed here for 11 nights while in Sydney to attend two Sept. conferences. I shared the unit with a colleague. She had spent an earlier week here with family before heading off to see some other areas of the country. We caught up back at the unit two nights after I had arrived. I was very grateful to my colleague because she wrote me in advance to let me know some key information (e.g., how to get there by train from the airport, nearby options for groceries, wine and takeout meals) so arrival in the dark was easy. Used the supplied entry code (it was tricky to read in the dim porchlight) and made it in. My first impressions? Quaint yet modern, stylish and spotless. It was a nice place to arrive after a long journey. In addition to the two bedrooms (each with a plump bed and crisp white bedding), there is an open kitchen/living area, a small bathroom with shower, and a private courtyard (which is where the stacking laundry is located). Things I loved about the unit: - Historic charm, yet modern conveniences. - Spotless, generally well equipped. - Ideal setup for sharing or for a family (open plan great for gathering). - Great location (funky area, walking distance to Sydney Uni, easy transit commute to downtown). - Prompt, friendly email correspondence with owner. I would have appreciated: - Some written notes (e.g., how to work gas heater, how to get to grocery store, liquor store, etc., recommended local dining spots and attractions) - have commonly received those at other rentals. - Included wifi. Being an international traveller, I could not use data roaming or my phone without incurring huge charges. I eventually found local cafes with wifi but this was a huge inconvenience, particulary since we needed to connect with colleagues. - Better knives. - More comfortable dining chairs. Overall, a great experience.
“Nicest place ever!”
The Jean Eileen is an beautifully appointed little house. It strikes just the right balance between boutique and the feel of home. The kitchen had everything you need to be self catering and there were good shops to pick up dinner (as well as lots of places to eat out) just up the road. Plenty of extra bedding, good heating and just an all round lovely place to stay.
“Inner City Oasis”
My wife and I stayed for 6 nights and were very impressed with the cottage. Light and airy with loads of room and high ceilings. It was clean and comfortable and very convenient to King Street, Newtown train station and a great pub - The Courthouse, as well as loads of great places to eat including Thai Pothong. 2 good sized bedrooms and a generous living + kitchen area, the really great thing was that it was pretty quite, so we both slept well. Hope to be back soon. Wes
“Bijou chic meets Bomenia in Syndey's coolest neighbourhoud”
Widely-held opinion recognises that Newtown is the most happening, alternative neighbourhood in Sydney, and Jean Eileen Cottage is smack in the middle of it. Sydney attacts vistors for many different reasons - in our case a work commitment at the University plus a few days family sightseeing. Whilst I enjoy elements of the downtown Harbour Bridge/Opera House area, one visit is enough for me, as it shares many of the disadvantages of globalised city hotspots - being inundated with camera clicking tourists, overpriced food and accommodation, inane shops selling tourist tat, and an unnerving sense that you could actually be anywhere in the world without quite realising it. So having the chance to stay in a seriously cool neighbourhood, in simple, economical, very well serviced, clean, bright, good value accommodation was an absolute joy. The family all felt we engaged in a genuine Sydney experience that we couldn't possibly have found 'downtown'. Restaurants, bars, pubs, ice cream parlours, coffee shops, all kinds of clothing and second hand stores just a stone's throw away. Whilst I recognise that neighbourhood living might not suit everyone's taste, for us at least it was the perfect spot. A real gem!
“Fantastic local experience in a brilliant location”
This place was great! It was so much better than staying at a hotel. We got to be in a real Sydney home, right in a terrific part of the city, shopping at local stores and soaking up the atmosphere of one of the really bustling districts of the city. There were so many great restaurants and pubs within walking distance that we want to come back until we've tried every one! And it was so easy to get into the middle of Sydney to see all of the sights - right near buses and trains. We even (when we were feeling particularly active) walked all the way to Central Station! The cottage was really lovely - neat and clean and nicely appointed. It was so nice to be able to kick back and watch television if we felt like it. There was heaps of room for all of us to retreat to our own space when we needed to, and plenty of space for getting together to discuss our days adventures. I will have fond memories of breakfast in the sunny back courtyard for a very long time. Staying at Jean Eileen really made our visit to Sydney and we plan to stay again if we ever get to go back. Thanks so much!
“A great place to stay”
What a great place to stay. Its in a great location...only 2 minutes walk to King Street cafes and bars. Its got a lot of character and we found it very comfortable, roomy and quiet plus it has all the the mod cons and a new kitchen. The courtyard is like a little oasis. I'll definitely be back.
“bright, airy, very welcoming”
What a lovely place to stay in the middle of newtown. The house was extremely clean and bright, the furniture in the house was very comfortable. I loved the fact that the TV and stereo system were the latest technology. Both bedrooms were bright and very welcoming. The back yard was wonderfully big and the decking/seating around the back yard was fantastic. I would recommend anyone stay here - and it's pet friendly as well - I will definately be booking the house again.
