“Wonderful apartment in Lucca”
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at apartment Ottolini. Francesco met our family of 4 at the train station and took us and our luggage to the apartment. The 3 bedroom apartment is spacious, had air conditioning (a wonderful feature in august) and is located in a charming building inside the walls of Lucca. We enjoyed exploring Lucca, and we were within a short train ride to Cinque Terre and Florence. There are 72 stairs to reach the apartment, but for our family this was a positive as it allowed us to enjoy more gelato and pasta! We highly recommend this apartment and thank Francesco and his family for making our stay really nice.
“Tripadvisor to the rescue again ...”
So everyone likes the idea of heading to Italy and more precisely Tuscany for a week in summer. Three teenagers who are done with staying with the in laws and friends and want a real slice of Italian living. The other half is done with hotels and out-of-town rentals, wanting to be close to the action. Tricky combination. In the end we recall that Lucca is one of the most family friendly and historic cities in Tuscany. Where to stay? check out tripadvisor, and noticed that this little gem gets rave reviews. Rightly so. The apartment is at the top of a very historic building right in the middle of town. The owner, the unfussy Francesco, is very helpful with the booking and on our arrival by helping with all the bags, suitcases, bicycles and so forth. One is not allowed to park outside the building, so it's quite a performance to get it all of our things into the flat. The flat itself is simple, but charming. it's also very quiet which is quite a surprise given its position right in the middle of town where one would expect to be broken at all hours with the noise of Vespas, shops opening, bars and restaurants and so forth. It's a simple layout, but an effective on giving enough privacy to our children and to ourselves that we don't clamber onto each other. Lucca is a great choice for those looking to be located in a historical setting, but with plenty of choices of places to eat. it's a lot less frantic than nearby Florence, Siena and Pisa. And for cyclists out there like myself, Lucca gives great access to some terrific cycling heading north and south to Monte Serra. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would recommend this apartment as good value in this part of the world. The one caveat is that it is right at the top of a four story building and thus probably not suitable for those with an aversion to climbing several flights of stairs - or those with disabilities, very small children etc.
“We loved this apartment!”
Our group of 3 couples truly enjoyed this apartment and its wonderful location in the heart of Lucca. You can't beat the location and the steps were actually a bonus, because of all the wonderful food we ate at the restaurants and nearby cafes. Besides the excellent boutique shops, restaurants, and the great little wine bar just at the foot of the apartment, we loved picking up breads, cheeses, meats and wine and having our own little meals in the cozy apartment. I think we'd all agree that Lucca was one of the best surprises of our trip. I highly recommend this apartment and Lucca... I wish we would have had more time... This is also a great base camp when visiting other areas in Italy. We visited Cinque Terre, and were going to visit more while were were there, but we loved being in Lucca.
“Perfect central located appartment”
Lovely appartment, well located in the centre of Lucca, perfect for exploring, with a supermarket and patisserie around the next corner. Plenty of space for all of us (4 adults and one child aged 11) Francesco and his wife were perfect hosts. He arranged to collect us with from the station and returned us to the bus station. Also took time to explain the free parking areas outside the walls, for those coming by car. Wifi was very useful. Their local knowledge assisted us greatly and they recommended many good restaurants serving the local delicacies. Do not be put off by the stairs, it enabled us to eat more gelato and the table and chairs halfway up, were a bonus. A lovely place, which we will definitely recommend.
“You may have the universe if I can have Italy!”
Our family consisting of 4 adults (2 grannies 65+) and 3 children (10,12,17) stayed in this well equiped apartment for 4 nights in april 2012. We met Francesco at McD as arranged.Francesco was extremely welcoming. The apartment has fresh, clean, comfortable warm beds and fresh towels. Supermarket around the corner to get everything needed. Visitors should be aware of the 72 steps. We had no problem, burned the extra calories made up from the Italian ice cream we had daily. Lovely view from the apartment -we loved the typical red clay roofs and the washinglines against the walls so high! Apartment is in quiet area,we never felt unsafe when walking at night. We rented bicycles and loved cycling on the road outside Lucca.Main shopping street is almost around the corner. Most beautiful shops and handpainted tiles... In summary, we loved Lucca and would love to return to apartment Ottolini.
“Home from home.”
My wife, our grown up children and partners stayed for 4 nights in October. Francesco and his family couldn't have been more helpful. Francesco and his son meet us at the station, drove us to the appartment and even insisted on carrying our luggage up to the apartment. The appartment is on the 3rd floor of the building and is situated within easy walking distance (5 minutes or less )of the centre of Lucca. The appartment is well decorated with 2 modern bathrooms and a contemporary kitchen with all the appliances, crockery and utensils that anyone would need together with Wifi and Sky TV. Bed linen and bathroom towels are also provided. The appartment is in a quiet area and there was little noise even though there is a small restaurant nearby. The location is excellent with a small supermarket, coffee shop and restaurants close at hand. Visitors should be aware that the appartment is on the 3rd floor and there is no lift. This was not a problem for us since it helped to burn off the extra calories that we had consumed in several of the local restaurants! In summary, we had an excellent stay which was made all the better by the friendly and helpful approach of Francesco and his family.
“Beautiful apartment; great location”
This was a great apartment in the heart of Lucca. Francesco was a wonderful host and picked us up and guided us to a place to park our car just outside the wall. There are a lot of steps but my 78 year-old mother-in-law accepted the challenge. There are also some noises from the restaurant below but, as my family said, they are the sounds of Italy. It was a wonderful and spacious apartment that I would certainly recommend to others.
“Fantastic apartment right in the heart of Italian life in Lucca”
First of all Lucca is a lovely and rewarding city to visit. This was our third trip there but our first that lasted longer than a day trip. We stayed for 9 nights using Lucca as a base to explore Florence, Pisa, the Cinque Terres and Pistoia by train as well as having the time to thoroughly explore Lucca and it's environs by walking and cycling. An evening stroll around the walls of Lucca is a joy to relish and remember. Francesco's apartment is very comfortable, well furnished, equipped and appointed. There is some wonderful art displayed in the hall. Francesco and his wife were very welcoming. The apartment is on the third floor so there are a lot of stairs to negotiate but this did not cause much of problem to us. We stayed in august but we found that although it was hot on some nights (there is no air conditioning) we quickly acclimatised and were able to sleep well using the fans to keep us cool. There was some noise in the evenings from the Restaurant kitchen on the ground floor (mostly due to the washing of pots and pans) but Lucca is a mediaeval city with high rise buildings packed closely together with all their windows open in Summer so some noise is to be expected. It was part of the ambience as far as we were concerned. The local supermarket was good (backed up by a larger one outside the walls of the city) and people were very friendly and helpful. The apartment and location more than met our expectations and we had a superb holiday.
The apartment is amazing. It is located in the heart of Lucca in an incredibly charming building. The apartment has lots of characteristic charm but also the necessary modern amenities, including wifi. It had everything we needed, it was large, fully equiped and impecably clean. The owner couldn't have been nicer. He gave us pointers as to where to eat and maps and direction to help us on our day trips to nearby towns. We couldn't have been happier with this place.
“Fabulous base for our short break in Lucca”
I would wholeheartedly recommend this fantastic apartment for a break in Lucca, the location is ideal, only a few steps from the main sights, and a small supermarket and market just around the corner for all your essentials. We orgnaised this break as a treat for my parents in law, and the apartment itself was ideal. Extremely spacious for 5 adults, with a fully equiped kitchen, modern bathrooms, each room is extremely tastefully decorated and immaculatly clean. Please do be aware that the apartment is on the top floor and there are several flights of stairs, however these didn't cause any problems even for our 60plus parents. Just helped us work of all the wonderful food and wine we consumed on our stay. Francesco was a perfect host, meeting us at the train station and then ferrying us and our bags for two trips back to the apartment and helping us carry our cases up the stairs! Altogether a wonderful trip - thank you so much Francesco!
