Seven miles from where civilization ends, a short ride up wind swept beaches north of the Currituck Lighthouse towards the end of North Carolina you'll find Wash Woods. A true Outer Banks Cottage nestled deep inside woods consisting of old live oaks, bayberries and loblolly pines. Where wild horses eat sea oats.
It's here where seclusion takes on a whole new meaning. Looking to get away from it all? Take your shoes off and relax, you've found the place to do it. Located 500 yards from the beach, just a short ride up sandy roads by 4WD, Wash Woods offers all the peace and quiet you could ever want on a vacation.
The cottage was built in 1997 and is up to date with all the amenities you need to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Recently updated with new ceramic tile in kitchen and bath, new carpet and paint. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare complete meals for your family and friends. The cottage is simply furnished and features a master bedroom with satellite TV, guest bedroom with twin beds, family room with both double and single futons, satellite TV with surround sound and gas fireplace, (in season - Nov-April).
Dine in the kitchen, in the screened room or out on the deck, there is a heavy-duty charcoal grill for your use and plenty of room to set up a volleyball court in the back yard. Keep your eyes open though, the horses have definitely been in the back yard.
In fact. they've been in the front yard too. Don't be surprised to find them everywhere. Believed by many to be the descendants of shipwrecked Spanish Mustangs, there are nearly 100 wild horses that roam the area freely. You'll often find them playing in the surf.
Wash Woods is just the right size for a single family or a small group of friends. Priced right for everyone, it won't take every person you know to help share the cost of the larger homes on the OBX.
Imagine sitting in the hot tub on a moonless night, ocean sounds in the background, looking at the stars so bright you won't want to leave. It's the best of everything here, the activity and excitement of the beach a minute away and the quiet solitude of the woods.

“WE PLAN TO RETURN”
If you Love to spend time with the one you Love, this is the place. My girlfriend and I enjoy each other company. We like the privacy Wash Woods gave us. From the small talk on the enclosed porch to the hot tub under the stars or the morning moon in the sky. And, let's not forget about the outdoor grill...…I grilled every night…..With the local seafood and store bought corn on the cob, served with a bottle of champagne, You can call me a lucky man. The horses! Amazing sight to see. We had horses in our driveway every morning. The ocean, the sea birds, the fishing, with all this combined made for a wonderful time at the Outer Banks. If you are looking for fun and something different stay here. We laughed a lot while driving on the beach, being that this was all new to us and it was so much fun. Cheers to the owner for allowing us to share your beautiful home. Paul and Robin Roane Co. West Virginia
Response from the owner Wow! What a great review! We are so glad that both of you were able to take advantage of all that Wash Woods has to offer. We are looking forward to your next stay. You are a lucky man indeed.
“Beautiful location, house was amazing, nice and clean and very nicely equiped kitchen.”
We had the most amazing time at your secluded cottage. Thank your for your help with directions that first day. You were right about our being old pros by the end of the week. The kitchen was very well equipped. We loved the screened porch. We enjoyed the hot tub a few times. It was too warm a couple days, even in late evening. We saw a few horses the first day and a couple the next day or so. We were exited to see horse tracks outside on the road. Then, toward the middle of the week, we saw quite a few every day. We even had one come up under the carport right on the wood walkway one night! We ran right over to the outside stairs and watched. So exciting!! As we were leaving for home, there was even a bunch with a foal. We will definitely be back. Thanks, again
Response from the owner We are so glad you had a great time! nice to hear that you became veterans when it came to driving on the beach. Thanks for the kind words, we are looking forward to seeing you again! Flip & Melody
Can’t say enough great things about our stay! Everything was absolutely perfect! Flip was so great and always so available when we needed to call him to ask a couple questions. Driving on the beach was a cool experience! The house had everything we could have needed. Our 3 year old son kept saying how much he loved the beach house and has already said NUMEROUS times he wants to go back. Our dog had an absolute blast as well. The house is a perfect distance away from the water... you can either walk a short distance or drive there... but you’re still so secluded at the house. We saw horses every day, and one day after coming back from the beach there were horses right outside the front door on the deck at the house. That was pretty exciting! It is really incredible to hang out at the beach and have horses all around! We ended up seeing some dolphins too! It was honestly the perfect vacation! Thank you Flip and Melody!
Response from the owner We are glad you had such a great time! The horses under the house like that happens more than you think it would! We hope your son gets the chance to come back again. Thanks for choosing Wash Woods. Flip and Melody
“Great Honeymoon Location”
Washwoods is a great place to go for a honeymoon trip. Its secluded enough where you will have no one else around to worry about. The views were great with the surrounding forest and all the wildlife to the seven mile drive down the beach. It was definitely a great place to stay, only a short walk to the beach and miles and miles of beach to walk in search of the wild horses or seashells. Flip and Melody were great and everything turned out to be such a treat.
“If you want a secluded getaway, this is the place to stay!”
Amazing house in an an amazing setting! Very secluded and peaceful. Saw many horses, deer and turtles. The beach up that end is not crowded, so you feel like you have your own little piece of heaven all to yourself. Flip and Melody are very conscientious owners....quick response to your questions and concerns. We will definitely be coming back to Wash Woods for years to come!
“Second stay just as nice as the first!”
This was my second stay at Wash Woods of the 4th of July week. House was very clean and organized. Just enjoy it's location so much! My 7 year old loved to count the tree frogs every day and we enjoyed the hot tub. On the last day a stallion, mare and colt were in the drive. Deer walked across the back of the house. So peaceful. I look forward to another trip down! Flip was so very accomodating. Can't ask for anything more! Corolla had a very nice 4th of July celebration with fireworks as well.
“Even better the second time”
This is the second time my family and I have stayed at Washwoods. The place is very nice and comfortable. I keep on telling people about this place and my wife keeps telling me not to tell anyone. Why? She is afraid that it will be rented out before we decide what week we are coming back. Lol. She wants it all to herself!!. That should say how much we enjoy the cottage and area around it. Our stay was great. Good weather, caught fish in the surf. Crabbed in the sound. Went to the Oregan Inlet to rake for clams. Visited the Whalehead home. My wife and kids still enjoy the hot tub the most. Saw horses every day. Horses on the beach and we got to see two stallions fight close up while driving. Had the horses with a baby foal walk next to the porch one evening. Plenty of tree frogs and deer. Still waiting on seeing a wild pig though. Even though my wife tells me to keep quiet, please consider this place if you want peace and quiet but still a quick hop skip and jump to the secluded beach. You won't be disappointed.
Where to start...this home was everything we had hoped for and much more! My husband and I planned our one year anniversary trip to the "secluded cottage" and are already planning our next trip back. The home and all the amenities were in perfect condition and so clean! The home itself is tucked away behind pine trees and so secluded that not one car passed by our house during our stay. Not only was the house perfect, but working with Flip and Melody was so easy and they were very accommodating. We were sad to go, but excited to return. Thanks for a wonderful and memorable anniversary!
“The best beach vacation stay we've ever had.”
My husband, son and I stayed at this cottage in august of 2010 for a week. For a small family looking for a relaxing, secluded stay, this is the place. We had to leave a day and a half early that year due to Hurricane Earl, but we enjoyed every minute we had. My husband (who is not necessarily a beach lover) was up at sunrise to get on the beach to fish. He loved the fact that it wasn't crowded. And the wildlife is amazing. The house itself is roomy and clean...had everything we needed to make it a home away from home! We are thinking of another stay very soon and have already recommended this place to friends of ours. Just can't say enough about it.
“fun and relaxing”
This was our second stay at Wash Woods and it is still our favorite! We love that the house is set back in the woods offering some privacy, but still have only a short trip to the beach. We hope to come back to Wash Woods for future vacations.
