“Fabulous holiday experience in Umbria”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2013

Norma and Laurie at Spoleto Rentals were fantastic. From initial booking to the end of the holiday, they were so helpful and generous with their advice. Post Del Sole was everything we expected. Isolated on a mountain but only 25 mins from Spoleto. It was basically furnished, but we knew that and spent little time in the house apart from cooking & sleeping. We chose it as it is 3 apartments ideal & convenient accommodation for two families. The pool was lovely, big 15m and we all enjoyed sitting around it relaxing on the days we were not exploring Umbria. We even managed a couple of games of water polo, and with the bikes provided, held our own triathlon! Using the long driveway as the cycle and running track. The unpaved road up the side of the mountain to the house was a bit daunting at first, but totally manageable once you got used to it. We found a different route into Spoleto via Bazzano Superiore, with fewer bends and turns. Spoleto is conveniently placed with access to all the main Umbrian towns and Rome. The day trip by train from Spoleto which was easy, cheap and quick a wonderful day out, a must. The beach at San Benedetto del Tronto was 2 hours away, it was ok but crowded and commercialised. Lake Trasimeno and Castiglione del Lago was a wonderful day out, as were the towns of Montefalco (wine tasting), Bevagne, Trevi and assisi. The waterfalls at Marmore were spectacular, but go to the bottom of the falls as the walk down is quite tiring from the top (unless you like a hike). Spoleto itself was a lovely historical town with lovely restaurants and Conad, our favourite supermarket with the most wonderful squid from the fish counter. This was always going to be an outside holiday, the weather was fantastic. The outside space and plastic chairs were a bit uncomfortable when sitting out in the evening. The owner could invest in the outside space, build a patio with gazebo to create a relaxing seating area, to really complete the experience.

We really enjoyed our stay in Umbria. The Posto del Sole was more remote than we had anticipated but we enjoyed our week there. Not sure how the villa would work with more unrelated parties there at the same time but for us was great with two older couples, 2 daughters, one with husband and 2 kids, one with 1 child. Laurie was most patient when my brother and friend arrived very late and the lunch during the week at Villa Marianna was wonderful. Spoleto is a marvellous town as are many of the nearby towns and we loved our drive through the National Park. Fewer tourists everywhere than in Tuscany where we were the first week in august.

“Idyllic Italian Holiday”

A truly amazing Italian experience The pool was lovely and the views spectacular. Norma and Laurie's apartments are well equipped and clean. Centrally located to explore Umbria. We will definitely be returning to Spoleto for another holiday.

“The best holiday property we've ever rented”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2011

This farmhouse villa is in a breathtaking location, in acres of garden, with a 40 mile view across to assisi. We had a private pool, as the upper floor was vacant, as well as access to the simply gorgeous cooking of the chef in the neighbouring property 1km or so away. (15E for 8 course lunch). But it is the personal service Laurie provides all guests which made this holiday untouchable versus the many others we've taken. He and Norma love this area and make sure you get the holiday you need in the time you have - be that total seclusion or adrenalin rushes. We will be back for sure, and I've already recommended it to good friends in England as Spoleto and its surrounds have so much to offer (through Laurie and Norma's expert eyes).

“Posto del Sole”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2010

We would first of all specifically like to to take the chance to thank Laurie for his help when we had a problem with our car. He turned up at Conad almost immediately after we'd phoned him, took us to Roberto's garage and used his well established local connections and skillful command of Italian to ensure that our car was checked out straight away. Something that we would never have managed on our own in a strange land! Posta del Sole was a hit for the whole family. The kids particularly loved the pool and the rope swing. We encountered a couple of minor issues, which didn't mar our overall holiday experience but we hope you can treat as constructive criticism, namely: Towards the end of the second week of our holiday the drains started to smell quite badly which unfortunately made using the bathroom terribly unpleasant! The swimming pool only appeared to be cleaned twice over the course of our stay (on days one and three if we recall correctly). We can't really say that the water seemed particularly dirty but it did seem strange that this was only deemed to be necessary at the beginning of our stay. Just to reiterate: these are relatively minor gripes but we feel that they warrant a mention all the same. It might also interest you to know that we sent out quite a few enquiries to prospective holiday companies and your offers came fastest and were the most detailed which encouraged us to use yourselves. We have stayed in Italy once before and the quality of accommodation at Posta del Sole was certainly better than that which we encountered on the previous occasion. The welcome package was also a novelty for us, but obviously a very positive one. It's great having the odds and ends that you need to get going without feeling that you have to go out any buy absolutely everything on day one. Not a comment on Posto Del Sole but this website - this comments box is way to small!

Response from the manager We apologise profusely for the smelly drains ! This can happen in any ancient country house, however beautifully restored it is. It is one of the disadvantages of living in the country, particularly in a mountain location, where the seismic shifts, deep underground, can affect drainage systems. Thankfully, not often ! But, if you immerse yourself in an ancient country location, be prepared for this possibility. As for the pool, what our guests experienced was certainly a one-off. And, I cannot explain it. The pool should be cleaned every day and checked twice a day. It may be that our guests didn't see the pool man because he tries to be as unobtrusive as possible. Other than that, I just don't know. We are particularly careful about all our pools. If a pool is left for any period of time, particularly in the hot weather, it would stagnate. The pool at Posto Del Sole is partly made up of fresh spring water, which replaces itself automatically, all the time. So, the water should be fresh at all times. Again, if something went wrong with the fresh water flow, the pool would surely stagnate because of the lack of chemical in the water. That said, if our guests had alerted us that they felt the pool was less than perfect, we would certainly have had the pool thoroughly checked out and, if necessary, increased the amount of times it was cleaned. Again, we are sorry about this. We do our very best for all our guests. But, sometimes, things can happen that we don't know about. Once alerted, we act immediately !
