“A lush and magical retreat”

Reviewed 2 May 2014

March 27-30 What a treat to stay here! We thoroughly enjoyed eating breakfast on the lanai, listening to the bird song, wandering through the garden admiring flowers and detecting whimsey, and seeing all the beautiful aesthetic touches throughout the house. This place lives up to its reputation. Barbara and Del

“Honeymoon House :)”

Reviewed 9 Apr 2014

A gorgeous house! The most difficult decisions we faced involved having to balance our time between staying at the house (relaxing in the beautiful garden, peaceful jacuzzi tub, comfortable bed) and venturing out to explore the area around the house. The house had all the touches of home - well stocked kitchen, travel books, mixed CDs. Too many things to mention! The location was perfect for exploring the nearby Volcanoes National Park. It felt completely secluded and private, like we were the only ones in the jungle :) Also worth noting - we had a small issue with the batteries in the smoke alarm going off on the high vaulted ceilings (completely unavoidable of course). One quick call to Leslie and about 15 minutes later, someone was at the house to take care of it. Awesome service! All the details and the effort they put in to this home make it truly one of a kind! Thank you!!

“So unique, so individual, so delightful!”

What an amazing place the Maile Treehouse is - we loved this home. Although we didn't meet Leslie and Michael, their creativity, sense of humour and generosity shone throughout. So often we smiled at one another when we spotted another of their little personal touches "look at this" or "look at that"! When we arrived we said "there are no curtains!" Then that night we awoke for just a few wonderful minutes, we looked at one another and said to one another "wow - we get it!" The full moon flooded in and we felt almost part of the tropical rainforest. The sights, smells and sounds were so wonderfully vibrant all around us. The owners have provided exceptionally well for their guests physical, practical and spiritual needs... we marvelled at all the many small, but wonderful touches we kept coming across. They've thought of everything. We will be cherishing happy memories of our short stay here for many years to come. J

“Tranquility in the Treetops”

Reviewed 18 Mar 2014

This incredible home Leslie and Michael have created is so wonderul that our toughest decision was how to balance our precious time in the treehouse with excursions to the natural wonders which lie beyond the property lines. What a great blend of nature, spirituality, humor and beauty! The only thing that could have made it any better would be M-O-R-E! We were surrounded by greenery and birds all day and the stars and coquis at night...with mists softening the transitions... We were very sad to leave this peaceful retreat but rejoice in the privilege of sharing this wonderful space for even a short time. Thank you to Leslie & Michael!!! You are gracious hosts! Our visit will forever be etched in our memory as the beginning of our Big Island adventure together...and the starting of a fresh chunk of life...

Response from the owner delighted to have Maile so enjoyed.. we still feel the same ourselves every single time we go. Just a note... WE DO NOT HAVE COQUI frogs. The community is very vigilant in keeping this high decibel constant chirping invasive little frog, which has invaded much of the island including our neighboring areas, out of Volcano Village.. it is the grasshoppers that are heard at night :-)

“Luxury and whimsy looking out on treetops”

Reviewed 2 Mar 2014

This home was even more beautiful, luxurious, and peaceful than we imagined from the pictures online, and we couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay. The love and care the owners have for the Maile Treehouse is apparent from the moment we entered. We have never stayed in a home that is so well appointed. The continual discovery of surprises, both practical and whimsical, made this a magical stay. We especially loved all the music provided to create the perfect soundtrack for this hideaway and the book of activity suggestions. We would highly recommend their home to anyone!

“A beautiful way to end our vacation in Hawaii”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2014

Feb.28 Loved our stay here in early December. Having it decorated for Christmas felt so homey- all that was missing was the snow and cold which I have had plenty of since! Perfectly located minutes from Volcano National Park. I spent some time searching through all the corners of the garden- it was magical in there. I thought I found every little surprise and there would be another. Leslie has the gift of hospitality- this house goes beyond what one could hope for and it was a great way to end our vacation in Hawaii. Susan and David Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada

“Paradise in the Cloud Forest”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2014

This was one of the best and most memorable vacations any of us have been on. The treehouse served as a peaceful base as we set out each day to explore this unique and magical island. The beds were extremely comfortable, everything was easy to find and use, and the 'items' strategically placed throughout the yard were wonderful surprises! While we were here we explored Volcanoes National Park, the Green Sands Beach, Punalu'u Beach, Champagne Pond and much, much, more. Overall, it was an extremely pleasurable experience and we were so grateful for the care they had taken in preparing the house for us, we hope to return! Debbie, Ashby and alex San Francisco Ca

“Big island Shangri-la”

Reviewed 28 Feb 2014

Of all the home rentals we've done through Vrbo and Homeaway, the Maile tree house was by far the best in every category! The charming photographs, accurate description and welcoming aloha-spirit of the homeowners led us to choose this hidden gem. With so many activities in the local area, the Maile Tree House is perfectly located and offers convenient access to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; world famous Kona and Ka'u coffee estates; the southernmost winery in the U.S.; superb restaurants and the best, exquisitely crafted glass-blowing art work of Kilauea Volcano. While most people come to the Big Island for the sun and beaches, they do themselves a disservice because hidden safely on the side of the world's largest and most active volcano is the Maile Tree House which we now fondly refer to as our "Big Island Shangri-La." We spent 5 days and nights of sheer bliss in a place that you could easily envision Ernest Hemmingway in---inspired quietly in the early morning hours on the secluded lanai, overlooking tropical ferns, and unique Hawaiian birds singing among them. This lovely, tastefully decorated home, was just as conducive to our fondest dreams of reading quietly and relaxing totally, as it was to our sheer joy of soaking in a hot Jacuzzi after a looong day of hiking. At night, you can lay in bed, and looking out of the high window above you, you can gaze out into the starry Hawaiian sky; it reminded me of the darkest nights I spent at sea. The owners have done a magnificent job of designing and decorating this "Paradise Tree House"- Every time we walked up the stairs, we left the 'real' world behind us. They have thought of every detail and we sincerely appreciated it. We loved every moment we were there and were most grateful for all the hard work in assembling the book for things to do, see, etc. Don't miss the opportunity to stay in this most special place. We'll be back... J & B

“Beautiful Base”

Reviewed 28 Feb 2014

Every detail is unique and delightful It really is an oasis of tranquility and peace. It's a tough choice on whether to go and explore the island or stay here and just unwind and relax. It's peaceful, beautiful and full of so many personal touches so that you can enjoy your stay.

“Wonderful, relaxing, romantic anniversary retreat.”

Reviewed 30 Oct 2013

What a beautiful, welcoming place to come home to after a day of exploring this wonderful area! Just to sit there in the perfect arrangement, soaking in the sights and sounds was so relaxing and recharging. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and couldn't imagine a better place to have celebrated our 27th Wedding anniversary! Jeff and Janet Livingston, Montana
