“fantastic local stay experience”
We had an incredible time staying as a local in Kyoto. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this accommodation in the wonderful and historic suburb with such easy access to everything. Hospitality before and after our stay has been incredible.
“Perfect Location in Kyoto”
Have now stayed twice at the artist's Machiya while in Kyoto with three children. Great location within walking distance of several major monuments and with easy access to public transport. Great neighbourhood with easy access to restaurants and shops. Great to have a kitchen and Laundry. Really superior to a hotel. Will stay again next time we are in Kyoto.
Very nice apartment - tastefully done, well maintained and clean. Convenient location near Kiyomizu temple. Also a supermarket nearby for fresh food.
We are 4 adults and one kid. It's perfect. The house is beautiful, clean and convenient. The location is great. we would love to return.
We recently stayed at Gion Machiya for our five night stay in Kyoto. We had a wonderful time, fell in love with Kyoto and felt Gion Machiya was a lovely residence to base our adventures from and a wonderful haven each night. An easy walk to Gion and other restaurant areas, and public transport. All the mod cons you'd need and very well presented. Great instructions and found it easily on arrival. Thanks to Rob and Yukiko for a wonderful rental.
the machiya is nice and comfortable. the location is very good, easy walking distance to interesting places and close to the bus stop. the nearby "bakery and grocery shop" make it convenient for the renter. the amenities such as the towel quality could be improved.
“Excellent traditional accommodation in great position.”
This traditional townhouse has a very smart and functional upgrade. It gives one an idea of the traditional urban Japanese house with modern facilities. The position is great in a quiet residential suburb close to the temples and restored neighbourhood. We would return without hesitation. The management is very professional.
“Amazing, unique experience to live in a Japanese neighbourhood”
The home was immaculately presented, comfortable and a perfect space to rest in, away from the heat of the city. Arriving by taxi is their recommendation and the best way to go, just give the driver the instructions they give you and enjoy the journey and the welcome from the neighbours and the local bakery on the corner (highly recommended). For us the best part of the three nights we stayed was being able to relax at home after long days in the heat of Kyoto streets. We could sample local food (stores and a good supermarket one block away) and try things unavailable when in hotels. Having the convenience of a washing machine was also a bonus. Overall there is nothing to dislike about the Machiya. The decor is bright with wonderful pieces of art to enjoy. The location is superb and I cannot recommend the place highly enough. Do not hesitate and book if it is available.
“A wonderful opportunity to 'live like a local'”
Staying at this machiya truly made my family's first visit to Kyoto extra special. We instantly fell in love with the house and its cosy yet authentic atmosphere. It's fitted out beautifully and every detail has been carefully considered. The house location is perfect for exploring the city on foot or for catching a bus nearby - we felt right in the heart of the action, yet also enjoyed the peaceful sense of escape in the quiet back lanes. Everything from arrival to departure went extremely smoothly, clearly the owners understand travellers' needs very well. The accommodation suited our family perfectly with our children (ages 10 & 8) sharing one bedroom easily. There are also handy shops, supermarket, café and restaurants nearby - it's a friendly neighbourhood and after a couple of days we felt completely at home here. We can't wait to return again...! Thank you.
“Taste of Japan- traditional feel - modern amenities”
Staying in this lovely peaceful, traditional but thoroughly modern machiya really added a great deal to our stay in Kyoto. It was quite pricey but worth worth it and the area was quiet but easily accessible for town. The booking was handled very professionally and help was on hand if needed. Can definitely recommend this place.
