“An authentic Tobagon experience - basic, but great location! Lov”

Reviewed 19 Apr 2013

We spent two weeks in Saffron studio apartment in March 2013 and had an excellent time. If you are looking for luxury accommodation then this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for basic self-catering accommodation in an authentic Tobagon setting then you will find it is ideal. The balcony on Saffron is the best feature as it is extremely private and surrounded by lush vegetation. Numerous birds (and bats) visit the balcony each day if you put out food. The apartment is in a great location. You feel safe as it is within the village and it is only a very short walk from the beach (although up a pretty steep hill). As it is within the village, you should expect some general noise including music from the Blue Mango pub/restaurant; however this didn't bother us, it just added to the general relaxed atmosphere. Before we went, we were slightly concerned about the lack of air conditioning, wondering whether it would be too hot to sleep well. However, as described in the cottage details the open, airy construction of the building means that it does not get too hot, especially with a fan on. The apartment also has a lockable safe which made us feel more comfortable about leaving valuables and passports etc. We were also provided with a mobile phone for the duration of our visit which was really helpful for contacting the manager and arranging trips etc. The manager and maid were very attentive without being intrusive. The self catering facilities are adequate, but not perfect so you may have to improvise a bit. There is no grill and although there is an oven, no baking tray/roasting tin was provided. Overall we thought it was a great base, and Castara is wonderful. Beautiful and welcoming to tourists. We travelled throughout the island during our visit and felt that Castara was without a doubt, the best place to stay.

“Castara Cottage”

It was my second trip to Tobago & this time had the pleasure of spending 5 nights in Saffron apartment at Castara Cottage. It's a large studio with a high ceiling & doors/windows that take up most of the outside wall - giving a real sense of spacious, airy freedom. The apartment is simple, but very clean & well equipped (better than average for a Caribbean apartment). Although the view is not spectacular, the unique design was really appealing. Not just a simple box-like room as found in many other places. There is a private balcony where I spent most days, just watching, looking & listening to the local comings & goings of village life & the amazing birds (if you feed them). I've read previous reviews about the noise of dogs barking, cockerels crowing, cars driving by, etc etc... but, Castara would not be the natural, unspoilt Castara if those sounds were eliminated ! Castara is a lovely village - but the beaches could do with a little more attention with regard to litter & roaming, neglected dogs. It's a great base for touring the West & North of the island - and has a magnetic appeal. Glad to be 'home' at the end of an exciting/exhausting day touring the island. Almost every bar & restaurant is good - but my choice has to be the Boathouse - really delicious food & an excellent atmosphere. Nothing to complain about & would be happy to recommend/return myself.

From very first contact, until we left anne was very helpful and knowledgeable. We stayed in Cinnamon, which was perfect, very well stocked with all essentials, and even more. The only mistake on our part was not taking up anne's offer to use ear plugs ( for roosters, and cars driving up a wet steep hill). We would love to go back.

“Wonderful vacation in paradise”

We spent about 3 weeks in Castara Cottage (Saffron), from middle of July until beginning of august. All in all we had a wonderful fantastic time! Castara Cottage is a nice place to stay, very close to both beaches of Castara. The manager Joshua was very helpful at any time! The accomodation of Saffron ist very nice, may be not a 5* standard, but comfortable at any time. Castara is the nicest place to stay in Tobage from all villages we saw! The people are very nice, the food in the restaurants is good. Not to forget about the trips with Mentalist, a brother of Joshua (rain forest) and Doc, with who we had great boat trips! A really fantastic choice to go fishing, snorkeling or to other beautiful places of Tobago. Also the car rental (Taylor, at the small beach) we can recommend. Thex did there best to organize a car to any time we wanted to really fair prices. We would say you don't need a car for every day. Small trips, for example to English Mans Bay you can do by taxi ride with Taylor Car rentals, that is even cheaper then renting a car. They bring you to the beach and pick you up at any time you want! Do not count on the public bus system. No one exactly knows whether and when it works. Finally we didn't hear a dog barking at any time! We liked the noises of Castara (mostly birds). For sure we will come back one time to this wonderful place!

Wow. That could be the entire review. Where to start. First off before my girlfriend and I got there the owners notified us that they were upgrading us to the top suite. It was amazing. It had an unreal view of the sunset from the porch, an outisde shower in which you could see the sunset, and fun things we discovered throughout the trip (hammock on the porch, windows that opened up in the living room to let birds fly in, etc.) It was a walk away from both beaches and a short walk to town. Josh who is the manager was extremely helpful throughout the trip. I can't say enough about how he enhanced the experience. Him and his family basically run Castara and between all of his brothers we got hooked up. One brother (Chino) owns a restaurant (Chino's) where we ate at multiple times. It's a nice place right in the middle of town. His other brother drove us around the island for sight-seeing and waterfall experience (the waterfall is a ton of fun), and Josh himself took us to an island party and drove us around. He was also there whenever we needed him. We took alibaba's tour for a boat ride (read: booze cruise) around the island. The two hosts were hilarious. Alibaba himself is a character as well. We went to this place called Nylon Pool where you can stand in the middle of the ocean. Really just absolutely amazing. Caught some fish, had an island-style BBQ, Snorkelling, etc. That's the one thiing you absolutely have to do. Other Highlights: Bongo night at the Boathouse (I think that's what it's called). The Boathouse was a great restaurant right on the small beach. Live band on our last night at Chino's. Caribs. Rum. Small beach. In all honestly there were too many small highlights to the trip to list here. Every day was amazing whether it was laid-back chilling at the beach or doing some sort of event/sight seeing. The people that live in Tobago are really what put the trip over the top though and are the reason that, without a doubt, we are going back.

“Excellent Holiday”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2010

We - my husband, myself and our two children aged seven and nine,- have just returned from a two-week holiday in Tobago where we had an absolutely fantastic, time. It was our first visit to the island, but it certainly won't be the last. We stayed at Castara Cottage in the Tamarind apartment which was exactly as we imagined it would be. We especially enjoyed relaxing on the patio and feeding the different birds which came every day for the bits of fruit nuts, biscuits and other tit-bits which the children especially liked to put out for them. Other great experiences were buying freshly caught fish from the fishermen's co-op in Big Bay, and being lucky enough to get freshly - baked bread and delicious cakes from the mud oven. The apartment was clean and very well-equipped with everything we needed, and we loved the fact that it was so well-placed for both of Castara's beautiful beaches and the great snorkelling near the rocks in Heavenly Bay. As we were 'Tobago virgins' we really appreciated the quick responses and useful information on everything we wanted to know from Ann, one of the owners. Joshua, the manager not only looked after us very well, but it was also very re-assuring that he lived just down the road - near Chino's café where the food is delicious. We hired a car so were able to travel around the whole island and can honestly say that Castara and Castara Cottage are great places to stay if you are looking for a friendly and relaxing holiday in Tobago. “Happy DAys”

We spent 2 weeks at Castara, and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of our visit. The house was very well- positioned a short distance from the 2 stunning beaches, and close to shops and very nice cafes. The housekeeper looked after us very well indeed, and we thought the cottage was well equipped, and quite comfortable. The best thing was sitting on the beautiful balcony each morning eating delicious local fruit and bread, and watching the fabulous parade of birds who came to share it with us. Just one small proviso - one needs to be a bit careful of random callers at the house. The vast majority are absolutely charming, but one or two can be a bit of a nuisance.

“A Stay In Paradise”

Reviewed 14 Jan 2010

Earlier this year my husband, son and I travelled to Tobago to stay in a beautiful, family run apartment called Castara Cottage. This was our second visit to Castara Cottage and we weren’t disappointed. We stayed in the same Cinnamon apartment which felt like home. It was spacious, clean and had all the amenities we needed, with a bonus of an additional outdoor shower. Wildlife is all around you and our son thoroughly enjoyed trying to catch the ghekos and feed the brightly coloured birds that visited us on our porch. The manager, Brigette, was friendly, approachable and always available during the day if needed. She would also come in a couple of times a week to change the bedding, lay out fresh towels, etc... This of course helped make our stay more pleasant. Because of its extremely close proximity to 2 beaches our son was never out of the water. The locals are very friendly and engaging with some great local knowledge. There were many activities for us to do. One of our favourites was a fishing trip we went on. We set out from morning, fished, snorkled and took in the amazing sights. The highlight of that trip was eating lunch on a beautiful beach where we got to feed a sting-ray. On another occasion we got to see giant turtles laying their eggs. If, like us, you like nature you will understand how exciting that was for us. The local cuisine was mouth-watering and very affordable and even though we had the facilities to cook we found ourselves eating out a lot of the time. Overall we gave this holiday experience 5* for its homely, friendly, non complicated, easy going surroundings and will definitely be booking a return trip.
