La Casetta at San Cristoforo, a handsomely restored 18thC stone cottage set in outstanding countryside, provides an enchanting setting for a memorable holiday for up to four people. The former workers' cottage stands in magnificent countryside between Urbino and Gubbio in the northern Marche.
The property boasts the highest standard of furnishings and decoration, a properly equipped kitchen, breathtaking views and an easy and convenient access road. The owners live onsite and have over 20 years experience of living and working in the area.
La Casetta and our other rental property, La Pieve, together with the main house - once the canonica, or presbytery - make up San Cristoforo, the former heart of a 13th century rural parish. The buildings stand on a small hillock in outstanding countryside with splendid views in every direction. To the front lie fields and woodland that lead the eye to the high peaks of Monte Catria, while to the sides are the tree-clad slopes of a small river valley and our vineyard and views of rolling hills as far as the horizon
La Casetta is well placed for exploring the historic cities of Le Marche and Umbria. Urbino and Gubbio, two of central Italy's best conserved Citta' d'arte, are less than half an hour's drive away.
The delightful town of Cagli - a beguiling example of a small, medieval Italian town - is only 5 km away.

“An absolutely idyllic spot”
My husband and I and another couple have just had a truly relaxing and memorable holiday at La Cassetta. What did we love about it? Its setting - quiet and peaceful with great views, a pretty garden and terrace - the perfect place to sit, read and enjoy a glass or two of wine, the cottage itself was very comfortable and had a real atmosphere of rural Italy. Having two double bedrooms with their own bathrooms was perfect. We loved the area, beautiful countryside, not touristy, Cagli was a joy, we wandered around the market and bought cheeses and olives, sat in cafes and watched the world go by. We drove up into the mountains and picnic'd, the wild flowers were amazing as were the views and the herd of horses grazing on the tops. We visited Urbino and would have liked to have seen more of the hilltop villages and towns in the area but we did not want to spend all our holiday driving around. So we walked, sat in the sunshine, popped into Cagli to buy bread for breakfast, cherries, delicious cakes, cheese and all sorts of goodies for our meals at home. Peter and Richard were very helpful with advice about the area. They were there when we needed them but not at all intrusive. My final comment - Great toaster! We would all love to return.
Who would expect a country cottage in the depths of Le Marche to come with 24 hour consierge as well as the magnificent Italian countryside, castled villages, great music, and fresh figs for breakfast hanging outside the door? We (couple in 60's) booked La Casetta for ourselves and our sister & brother-in-law for a week and wished we had booked for a month. The house was impeccably rustic with every comfort (queen sized bed!) and kitchen for real cooking (even has my favorite Italian cookbook). Captivating views out every window, inviting walks in all directions, terrace for lingering long into the evenings under stars and huge moon, gardens, (did I say figs?) and very friendly faces checking comfort levels, deferentially offering books, music, and travel helps, including sweet two dogs. Le Marche is definitely pre-tourist-invasion Italy. We arrived in nearby Cagli to witness the national Italian cross-bow competition complete with authentic costumes and Medieval-minded judges--and we were the only tourists in town. The best thing about La Casetta is the place, that such a place exists and is accessible. It is remote with driving required but lots of parking! Go before it's featured in "Travel and Leisure" which can't be long off.
Everything about this property was outstanding! The setting, views were marvelous, with easy convenience to wonderful sights when we chose to spend the day away. The house was charming and well- appointed. The hosts were wonderful-unobtrusive, yet always there to help in whatever way was needed.
“More Than Perfect”
We rented "La Casetta," our third time, the first two weeks of September of 2009 for what we believe to be one of the best vacations we have had in years. The beautifully restored farmhouse is absolutely perfect with all of the amenities one would want without being overly fussy: very clean, comfortable, tastefully decorated. We ate almost all of our meals outside on the beautiful patio overlooking a stunning view of fields, hills, the hilltop village of Frontino, and mountains in the background, perfect also for reading or just watching the clouds. The house presents the perfect blend of rural quiet with easy access to all of the sites of Tuscany, Umbria, and Le Marche. The nearest town of Cagli provides everything one would want of an Italian town--a beautiful piazza, churches, and a weekly market--without the throngs of tourists one might find in other parts of Italy. Most days, even on our excursions to nearby villages and towns, we were the only foreigners. One of our favorite aspects of staying at "La Casetta" is the hosts, Peter and Richard. They are friendly and informative without ever being obtrusive in any way whatsoever. One of our requirements for house rentals is not having to deal with other people, and Richard and Peter understand this well. Nevertheless, they are readily available to offer suggestions for outings, to recommend a restaurant or stopover on the way to a town, or to make reservations for some of the delicious restaurants in the area. Their knowledge and Italian fluency give one the opportunity both to discover things on one's own and to benefit from over twenty years' worth of experience in the area. As we make plans for future vacations, "La Casetta" is always in the back of our mind. In fact, we plan to return for a longer period in two years. Whether one is looking for a retreat to leave the world behind or a comfortable base for further exploration of central Italy, "La Casetta" is truly a gem and a find.
“Perfect house, perfect place”
The cottage was even nicer than its photographs: beautifully proportioned, warm colours and well equipped. The garden was a delight, with wonderful views to the hills, and changing light through day and evening. Peter and Richard are excellent hosts, with helpful advice about places to go, good wine, and in our case, hands on help getting our car repaired in Italian. Swimming is 20 minutes away in cold green river pools, and it's 40 minutes up to the cool of the mountains for an early morning walk with amazing views and lots of birds, including an eagle.
“Beautifully restored house which is very comfortable.”
We had a lovely week here during the autumn half term holiday in 2008. The house is very comfortable & has everything you could possibly need to help enjoy your stay - even down to umbrella & binoculars! The area is very pleasant - off the beaten track & all the better for it! Cagli is a very pretty town with interesting architecture & nice bars & restaurants - the local cuisine is superb. There is good local walking, great views & it is very peaceful. Not too far to the coast either! Richard & Peter are helpful hosts - they know all the best restaurants, walks etc etc. - and our 7 year old son loved the dogs! It was an absolute pleasure to stay there.
“Delightful house and landscape”
We had a wonderful time at La Casetta and would certainly return. The house looks over a delightful landscape: farmland, rising green hills, the lights of the hilltop village of Frontone in the distance. The house is very attractive: stone floors, some lovely pieces of furniture, colorful rugs, interesting paintings. Compared with other houses we?ve rented, it was exceptionally comfortable too ? from couches in the living room, to good reading lights, to ample dressers in the airy bedrooms, to the well-equipped eat-in kitchen. The kitchen opens onto a vine-covered terrace (again, well-equipped with table and chairs and garden chairs) which edges into a garden with roses, lavender, herbs ? and, beyond the fence, the fields and the hills. We spent most of our time outside, drinking in the peace and the spectacular view. The house is clustered with the main farm house in which the owners (Richard and Peter) live and a second rental property (a converted chapel). We?d wondered if it would feel sufficiently quiet and private but need not have worried ? we were barely aware of others? presence as each property has its back to the others, facing away in different directions. Richard and Peter?s care in the thoughtful design of the house is evident and they are extraordinarily knowledgeable and kind, whether in suggesting things to explore in Le Marche, describing paintings to look for in the churches in nearby Cagli, recommending specialities in local restaurants or making sure a light bulb?s quickly changed. If you?re looking for quiet, beauty and a window on a fascinating area, this is an outstanding place.
“What a wonderful week”
We came across La Casetta via the internet. We decided it was a good central point for the things we wanted to do, it looked charming and we had english speaking hosts. This was helpful as this was our first foray into the Italian rental scene. It was a long way for us to come but we could not have asked for a more magical place. La Casetta was comfortable, had all we needed and after hectic mornings or days being tourists, was such a welcome and quiet retreat. Richard and Peter were most helpful when needed but did not impose on our private time. I will never forget looking out the bedroom window during our first night and seeing fireflies buzzing around the garden, that was new to us. I also found it hard to read outside as I kept looking up at the view and most times ended up just watching the local comings and goings. La Casetta made a huge impression on me, I think about it often and have their site on my "favourites" so that I can go in and get my fill of the photos and memories. I was not ready to leave, we could have stayed a little longer. We will return for another holiday I am sure. On a more practical point, there are good local restaurants, you are also close to a number of interesting towns for day trips and the local town of Cagli is close for supermarket shopping, and also had the best restaurant we went to, La Giaconda. You do need a car, directions to get to La Casetta were good once we found our starting point in Cagli. But that is all part of the fun isn't it? I loved this place so much that I bought a little bit of it back to NZ (don't tell Richard or Peter) Actually it was only a stone so never fear the building is not about to collapse! Looking forward to our next visit. Ciao from Kim C.
“Peace and quiet in Le Marche”
My wife found La Casetta whilst Googling for somewhere to stay in Le Marche in 2006. We spent two weeks in May 2007 and enjoyed every aspect of the cottage, the location, the views, the facilities, the many delightful fortified mediaeval towns, the food and wine and our hosts, Peter and Richard, who were an interested fount of knowledge on what to do and see, what to avoid, when to go to specific places and perhaps most importantly when and where to shop for food. Shop hours can be a bit unpredictable. We avoid the hottest weather and found that May was ideal for us; all is green, spring flowers everywhere including high up the mountains nearby, where 1500 metres can easily be reached by car on good, if narrow, metalled roads. High level walks are pleasant and need not be too strenuous. We have never in the past returned to the same place twice but decided we would return to La Casetta in late April 2009. We had another really enjoyable two weeks, a fortnight earlier than in 2007. Despite a couple of wet days early on the weather was again just to our taste. We repeated very few of the excursions we made in 2007 but one cannot miss out another visit to Urbino under any circumstances! La Casetta was again all that we recalled and our hosts, plus their two dogs, welcomed us back warmly. This time we also picked their brains on the best wines that Le Marche has to offer. Sitting out on the patio, glass in hand, watching the sun set (and on this occasion also moon rise) was a delight. Great place and as you will have read thoroghly recommended! Go and enjoy!
As veteran rent-from-owner travelers, we know that there is always the risk that a property will not live up to the expectations set by exaggerated online promises. Our experience suggests that there are no risks when the property being considered is La Casetta. We and our guests experienced only happy surprises. The location is as enchanted as advertised. More importantly, the cottage is wonderfully comfortable and immaculate. The bedrooms, each with private bath, provide couples with maximum privacy. Firm mattresses insure a good night's sleep. The eat-in kitchen is well equipped and adjacent to a lovely outdoor patio. The quiet is extraordinary. La Casetta is within easy reach of Cagli and a perfect base from which to explore Le Marche. The owners, Richard and Peter, are congenial, behind the scenes hosts, whose helpfulness and hospitality are always present without being intrusive.
