“Sanctuary in the Medina”

Reviewed 15 Mar 2014

Wow. We had the most wonderful time in Fès. We visited in early December. There was barely a tourist about. The weather was cool, especially in the evening, but very comfortable. The house kept us warm in the dining/living room with many fires, and we all sleep better in cool air, so we opened the shutters wide in the bedrooms at night. The morning call to prayer was an atmospheric wake up- and not at all too loud. You can always shut the windows if you prefer to sleep... The house was an oasis of calm where we read, ate and talked... but a few steps out the door and you are in the midst of all the vibrancy we came to Morocco to experience. Perfect. Younès and Khadija were wonderful- so friendly and full of smiles. I miss that mint tea... it's not the same when I make it. We even had a fabulous dish of sheep's brains one night after I spied them in the souk- don't worry, no one will make them for you unless you ask! The salads are still our favorite dishes. We were 7 people, and ever so comfortable. 5 college and grad students plus 2 parental types, happy as clams. We felt so at home. We also spent 3 days in the Sahara (bit of a drive- stay longer! But it was really cold at night in December...)

“Stay Here!”

Reviewed 17 Jan 2013

We spent Christmas, 2012 at Dar 47 and I can affirm that it is wonderful. It is a super-comfortable 5 bedroom house beautifully restored with all the conveniences in mind. It was a little cold to enjoy the terrace but both of them have amazing views and I can see how they would be amazing during the Spring and Summer. Khadija and Younes were welcoming and amazing and made sure we were always comfortable and take care of. The house can be chilly in winter but they made sure a fire was always burning. The house is perfectly-located in a quiet part of the medina and close enough to a main gate that getting in and out is no problem. Kudos to the owner for their thoughtful emails and opening up their home to us.

“unforgettable holiday is one of the best Dars in Fez!”

I want to thank you for offering us the possibility to stay in one of the most amazing places ever! Your place left such an impact on us! The amount of light in the house, the simple but very elegant decoration and small details all over the rooms, the choice of colors and the cleanliness is just amazing... Not to mention the incredible view from the terrace perfect for breakfast or dinner... Everything was well prepared and Younes even gave us cards with the address written in arabic on them in case we got lost (thing that happens often in Fez). Not to forget the extreme kindness of Younes and Khadija. Younes gave us a real feeling of security. Talking with him was very nice and helpful. Khadija is sooo sweet and her cooking!!! the best we had in Morocco :))) The location is perfect, 2min walking from Bab guissa where you always find taxis and very close to "Nejjarine square" and the "Qaraouiyine mosque" as well as the amazing "Medersa atterine".

“Our stay at DaR 47 could not have been improved in any way and I”

Reviewed 27 Mar 2012

My husband and I, along with our daughter who is studying in Fes for a semester stayed at DaR 47 for five days in March. The owner Emma was very kind and very helpful in terms of making arrangements and providing information. She and Younes, the house manager, arranged a taxi from the bus station to the gate nearest DaR 47 -Bab Guissa. Younes met us at the gate and helped us to the property. Younes introduced us to Khadija, the cook and housekeeper. Dar 47 is a lovely property with large tile rooms, beautiful wood and breathtaking light. We spent many evenings on the rooftop till dark often eating dinner there. After dark we went to the first floor where Khadija would have a fire in the fireplace and mint tea prepared. The bedrooms are comfortable and some nights we marveled that it was quiet enough to hear the clack of a loom from a nearby property. From DaR 47 it is a short and interesting walk to the Guissa gate where you can catch a petite taxi to anywhere in the city. Younes arranged a day trip to Volubilis for us and we spent several days walking and shopping in the medina. We had Khadija prepare meals for us three nights and her cooking was excellent, varied, and greatly enjoyed. Similarly, breakfast was wonderful and included fresh orange juice, bread , eggs, and what we have come to call spongey pancakes but which I think is known as beghrir. Our stay at DaR 47 could not have been improved in any way and I wholeheartedly recommend the property.

“Perfect relaxation right in the Medina”

Reviewed 19 Oct 2011

I stayed at Dar 47 for a week in October and it was such a lovely place to stay. It's a beautiful Dar with a central courtyard and 5 bedrooms and 2 lovely roof terraces overlooking the Medina. Younes, the Manager, was very nice and helpful and Khadija, the live in housekeeper/cook was lovely and her chicken and almond tagine amazing! Fez Medina is a wonderful but very busy place and I loved coming back to the hidden quiet of the house every afternoon. When i go back next year I will definitely be staying here again

“Beautiful home in the old medina”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2011

We stayed at Dar 47 this past June with our young children and two other couples (6 adults and two children). The Dar is a beautifully restored traditional house in the medina, in a tiny street about a 7 minute walk from the city gate and the hotel Palais Jamai. The house has a beautiful courtyard and parlor, and a rooftop deck with a stunning view of the medina. The bedrooms are simple but elegant, and one has an amazing view from the window. Other reviewers have mentioned Younes and Khadija, who are the highlight of the house. Younes, the caretaker, is a bright, friendly young guy who speaks perfect English. He met us when we arrived and settled us into the house. He made himself available by cell phone and dropped in every few days to check on us. He became our friend in the medina, showed us around a bit, and helped out with all sorts of travel arrangements. Khadija was equally wonderful, and her cooking is as good as the best restaurants in Fes. This was my fourth trip to Fes, but the first for our travel companions. I have always wanted to stay in a traditional dar in the medina, and this did not disappoint. We felt like residents rather than tourists. One note: the dar has a lot of steep stairs and is about a 6-7 walk (uphill) to the city gate and parking lot. It is not for people who are not ready for some walking. (But, for that matter, neither is Fes). Also, Fes was very hot when we were there. The dar stays (relatively) cool and the upstairs bedrooms are air conditioned, but of course it is a traditional house with an open courtyard. During a cooler season this would not be an issue, but during the summer it was hard to escape the heat.

“An amazing Experience in Fes”

Reviewed 6 Jun 2011

I like to think of myself as a canny traveller - I do lots of research on our holiday destinations, and search assiduously for the best accommodation available. The result is that we have had some fabulous holidays all over the world - and our holiday in Fes was no exception. Dar 47 looked amazing on the website, but was even better in real life. The owner was so helpful, sending us details of events in Fes during our stay. We were picked up from the airport, taken to the nearest entrance to the medina, where we were met and transported to DaR 47. Then we met the lovely cook/housekeeper, who spoilt us rotten during our stay. The house is immaculate, and has everything you could need. I loved the decor! There was lots of information about where to visit, and where to eat out - but we enjoyed the food in DaR 47 so much we stayed in! We explored the medina, first with a guide and then on our own, and went further afield to Volubilis (wonderful) and Meknes (superb). The Fes Festival of Sufi Culture was on during our visit, and it was utterly amazing. I now want to return for the Fes Festival of Sacred Music in June - and of course stay in DaR 47 again!

“Turn Key Experience”

Reviewed 24 Feb 2011

It was my first time in Fez and I feel lucky to have found this place. Not only was it exceptional accommodation but it was the perfect turn key experience. I'm not a gusher but I feel compelled to do so in this instance. You'll notice from the site www.dar47.com that every amenity is on offer including food, tours, transfers etc and Emma the owner is very responsive to help coordinate such things for you. Upon arrival our local host Younces collected us at the Medina gate and was always available to help us with anything we needed. Don't bother eating out as Khadija's food is better than you'll find at the local restaurants - and it's very healthy. I don't know if this is the best place in Fez as it was my first visit. I can confirm it was the best travel experience/accommodation I have come across in my extensive travels around the world. If you want to stay in the Fez medina, in a group or on your own, you will thank yourself for booking Dar47. Thanks to Emma, Younces and Khadija for a perfect stay!

“Best place to stay for a group”

Reviewed 21 Dec 2010

I traveled with a group of 8 friends for 3 nights to Fes and we all agreed that Dar 47 was the most impressive accommodations we've ever had, anywhere. The house is perfect for a group, the service is impeccable, and the food was amazing. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Service before and during our stay was absolutely top-notch. Thank you so much!
