“The perfect, quiet getaway for two.”
My wife Barbara and I just returned from our ten day stay in Maui. We spent the first three days around Hana. The whole area is beautiful but what made it really special was the two nights we spent at the Koali Ranch Cottage! What a wonderfully clean and romantic little house to come home to! It really was home to us. We spent the rest of our stay in Kaanapali. It was big, plush, and glamorous and the whole time we were there my wife and I pined for our little ranch cottage in Hana. This is what Maui is all about. We will be back!
Response from the owner John M, We really appreciate the glowing report you gave to Koali Ranch Cottage. We are pleased that you hope to return; we hope so too. Please call when you get here. Chuck Gray
“Best View Yet”
I am a retired, fussy school teacher. You know what we are like. When I walked out on the lanai (I call it a veranda) I knew the 16 hour flight was worth it. The little gray cottage has a view, a great bed, a kitchen with windows that lookout to the ocean and a lanai that you don`t want to leave. Chuck Gray, our host, gave us more information on beaches and outings, than I have room for. Wendy supplied a info package, we needed weeks to do all the stuff. Hana is a sleepy little village with beautiful old churches, a general store in a quanset hut, several roadside lunch places (one in a converted bus with strudel that brings tears to your eyes); and that most exquisite beach, Hamoa. Looking for surf, the waves at Koki were way too much for old guys like us, the State Park has a black sand beach, another park has The Seven Scared Pools. This is not the place if you want hype and flash. A quaint cottage, clean and pretty with origanl art work, a lovely lanai, a view; finally, we experienced old Hawaii. What I liked least: I didn`t stay long enough.
“Serenity, solitude, grandeur, and the spirit of aloha”
I was speechless when we first entered the cottage and turned the corner to face the makai lanai. There's no other view like this one. You could spend your entire visit just taking it in, watching the livestock (horses and cattle) enter the pastureland far down the hill each morning, the waves, the birds, the view of the Big Island appear and disappear as conditions change. The cottage is perfect -- a simple, equipped kitchen (range/oven, microwave, fridge/freezer) with the same dazzling view, a generous lanai with lounge chair and dinette, a queen bed, some beach items in the closet (boogie boards!) and a bathroom with a spacious, beautifully tiled stand-up shower. It's well-decorated and has an LCD Hdtv w/ cable, if for some reason the action outdoors isn't enough for you. We brought some provisions from town but there are also two very good grocery stores in Hana (15 min away). The owners are very welcoming and will encourage a call upon your arrival if it's not too late. This is a true spiritual retreat if there ever was one. I'd love to keep this place a secret -- the Grays are so generous to open this cottage up to the public. They are making the world a better place by letting their cottage be a place for people to recharge and reflect.
“best stay in Maui”
The cottage is between 7 pools and Hana. It's great- private full views of the ocean and every thing you need to have a fun restful stay. Chuck wants everyone to have a good stay and will fill you in on where to shop for great food and fun places to visit. It might seem too far out, but a week is almost a minimum. The back porch is terrific. pictures don't do it justice. We'll be back
Perfect little cottage with a magnificent view of the ocean. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the Hana area. Backing out of the parking area onto the Hana Highway was a little scary but other than that the location is perfect. Out in the country, nothing but a horse / cow pasture between the cottage and the ocean.
“Hana's Secret Little Gem”
Koali Ranch Cottage is truly Maui's best kept secret! We felt as though we had our own little hideaway in a heavenly slice of paradise. This is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and just be...the tranquility and beauty of nature envelop you. The panoramic view from the lanai is breathtaking and you'll never want to leave. We did drag ourselves away to go hiking, snorkeling and horseback riding, but it is an absolute pleasure to return. The cottage is absolutely immaculate - spotless - and perfectly appointed. We can't wait for our next visit!
“"Consistently A Perfect Retreat For Us"”
"I have lived in West Maui for over 15 years now, and have been going to Koali Cottage for over 10 years. For those of you that want peace, privacy, a unique ocean view from a balcony that one could spend the rest of ones life on, quaint but accomodating facilities for two, then this place is for you! We try to come every year and it has become a tradition with us! We come for at least 3 nights minimum because the time always goes by way to incredibly fast with all of the natural beauty that you see, hear, and smell... I could go on and on about the various magical things that happen here while enjoying the balcony at all times of day and night, from looking at the morning sunlight on the ocean with whales or schools of dolphins breaking the water surface off in the distance, to lazy afternoons sipping on soft wine looking across the channel to the snow capped volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, to having candlelight evening meals with incredible shooting star nights with the sound of the ocean below. It Just Goes On And On And On!!!! The walks in the late afternoon when the traffic is more at a minimum, really give you a chance to feel the local environment and wave to the friendly local people when walking past their homes. The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and we bring loads of food in order to minimize ever having to leave this haven. I promise you that there is nothing to loose by trying Koali Cottage except for all of lifes "chatter". You will be hooked for life! I know we are!!! Aloha, Tim Kahana, West Maui, Hawaii"
We wanted to share how much we enjoyed our recent stay at the Koali Ranch Cottage in Hana. Hana is one of our favorite places in the world and this cottage was the perfect place for us to enjoy it. From breakfast on the deck every morning, to watching the whales during the day, and hearing them at night, our stay was truly relaxing. The location on ranch land overlooking the ocean is our standard for a peaceful setting. It is nice to be able to stay in Hana for a few days, experiencing it's beauty in a relaxed fashion. We hiked Oheo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools), boogie boarded at Hamoa Beach, viewed Red Sand Beach and Honokalani Black Sand Beach at Wainapanapa State Park without rushing. The cottage's central location gives access to activities in Hana as well as a wonderful place to "hang out". Make sure you plan at least one day to stay completely at the cottage. You can walk through the ranch land, down to the ocean. The cottage is quaint, beautifully decorated, very clean with a well equipped kitchen. Three-quarters of the oceanside wall has a series of sliding glass doors offering spectacular views. We look forward to returning and want to mention how much we enjoyed the hospitality of the cottage owners: Chuck and Jean Gray. Mahalo!
“A Million Dollar View”
Chuck Gray, the owner, has a nice lady by the name of Wendy Horen handling your reservations. Her constant contact via email made everything run smoothly. Our stay went by without a hitch. When you first pull into the driveway of Koali Ranch Cottage, your first impression is that it is a small house. However, after walking through the front door, your eyes are immediately drawn to the expansive view through the sliding glass doors, which cover about two-thirds of the entire back wall. My wife and I were awestruck with this view from inside the house, but it was even more amazing from the lanai! Because of these glass doors the house appears so much larger than it is. Your eyes are treated to a blissful view of open pastureland, a herd of cows, and a few horses between you and the crashing surf. It is such a wonderful view that we spent lots of time on the lanai. We’re not sure if it was because it was so peaceful and calming or that the view is so mesmerizing. Whatever the reason, we caught ourselves drawn back to it again and again. The house is small – not more than 600 square feet or so. You have a bathroom, main room, and kitchen. The comfy bed is in the main room along with the TV. The bathroom has a tiled shower that is huge! All the regularly need supplies are there. Just bring your toothpaste and toothbrush! Koali is an old house with wooden frame, floor, and exterior walls. There is no air conditioning since it is usually not cold or warm enough to need such and the constant ocean breeze brings plenty of ventilation. The furniture is functional in its offerings. This place simply provides a home-y feeling for the average Joe. Some of the finer touches are the bottle of wine in the fridge and the live, blooming orchids around the house. Chuck jokingly said it was a view worth a million dollars. Although we believe he intended the joke to indicate a literal meaning, we would care to believe it in its whimsical state.
“We spent the late afternoon and evening totally relaxing on the”
We loved Koali Ranch Cottage. From the moment we walked in to thee minute we had to leave, we were stunned with the views the cottage afforded. Sitting on the lanai from mid afternoon till well after dark - we just never left our seats - only to refill our wine glasses, fix dinner (which we ate outside), or hit the restroom. Really - it was from our chairs to the bed. Even one night after going to bed, I had woken up around 2:00 AM and went outside to see the stars and the Southern Cross was directly in view right straight out from the lanai. I was blown away by the vastness and how bright the stars were. I could go on and on. All the appointments in the cottage were very nice - fresh local flowers in vases, very plush towels, lovely soaps, all the appliances and kitchen tools you could ask for. A Brita water filter was super! At some point I just have to stop this review, but as you can see I could keep on. LOVED KOALI RANCH COTTAGE!!! Also - the owners, Chuck & Jean were fabulous people. Went on a nice hike with Chuck and had a nice wine & cheese party down by the ocean. Great people!!!
