“Beautiful and comfortable house, gorgeous views, huge yard.”
My husband, our three-year old daughter, and I enjoyed this home for the month of September. During this time we welcomed visitors and always had plenty of room for guests. The house is large, lovely, and very comfortable. The location of the house is really wonderful. On a quiet street, but right off of the main street into town. The house is on a double lot, and the large back yard has many tall trees providing nice shade. The yard has a sand area that our daughter loved to play in, and next to that is a fire pit that is great for evenings. The lake is really shallow for at least 100ft, so it is nice for wading out and playing with kids. There are no fears of anyone falling into the lake. A kayak and paddle boat are provided. The back deck is lovely and shaded. There are comfy adirondack chairs on the deck, and a nice built-in table with benches that seats at least 8. There is a charcoal grill, and I just can't imagine a better setting for dinners on the deck. The best thing about this house is the view!! Throughout the house (including from 3 of the 4 bedrooms, both living rooms, and the kitchen/dinging room), large windows look out on Lake Mac. The view changes all day. We had wonderful bird watching, and boats come and go through the bay all day on their way to and from the marina that is just a block away. The sunrises are gorgeous. From the house, Lake Michigan beaches are a short bike ride (or tiny drive) away at State Park and Tunnel Park. There are bike paths all over the area. We espcially enjoyed biking to Tunnel Park which has an awesome playground and a beautiful beach. We made many good meals in the spacious kitchen. With both the breakfast nook and large dining table in the big open kitchen, it's great for entertaining. The kitchen is well stocked. The yard and home are well cared for. The owners live nearby and are kind and responsive. Downtown Holland is less than a 15 min drive away.
“Lovely vacation home on Lake Macatawa”
My family stayed in this lovely home for one week this past July/August and it worked out great. Our group consisted of my mother, my two sisters and myself, and our five kids (ages 5 to 12). The bed arrangements are one queen in a huge master suite, one queen in another large room, a twin/full bunkbed in a tiny room, and two sets of bunkbeds in a fourth bedroom. There is also a lot of common area, a breakfast nook and dining room table, and an open kitchen that has original features as well as updates. This home is on the waterfront, but the water level of Lake Macatawa is currently really low so the water in front of the home is very shallow and extremely mucky so it was not really wadable for our children. Holland State Park is a short drive, though, so you have easy beach access. We met the owners as we were on our way out at the end of our stay, and they seem like a very nice couple. The only issue we encountered (very minor) was that "towels provided" did not mean beach towels, as we assumed it did. We came from across the country and it was not practical to tote nine beach towels (nor did we think it was necessary), so we ended up having to borrow a bunch from local relatives. Not a big deal, but just be aware of this.
Response from the owner Sometimes when it rains, the water in Lake Macatawa gets very cloudy and fills with sediment. The Macatawa River flows into Lake Macatawa and tends to have an impact on water quality. Last summer the $25 million Lake Macatawa water project was launched with the goal of improving water quality by 70 percent in 5 years. While water may be cloudy at times, the lake bottom is solid and sandy and anything but mucky.
My wife, her parents, and our daughter all enjoyed a wonderful week in luxury. The owners were responsive and helpful. The home was clean and well stocked for vacationing travelers. The home itself, the lake frontage, and the close proximity to public parks and recreation made this an ideal end to summer. The home is a very spacious four bedrooms. The main floor has a mudroom/laundry room with shower. a master suite, two living spaces, a dining room, a very big and functional kitchen, and a spacious office. The master suite (not pictured) has a gorgeous lake view with new huge bay windows. The master bathroom has a extra large tub and standing shower. Both living spaces provide room for all occupants to enjoy. The kitchen is very functional and well stocked, with a built-in eating space. All rooms on the main floor except that mudroom have fantastic lake views. The second floor has the former master bedroom (the home was added on to recently) with great lake views, two other bedrooms with plenty of beds, and a big bathroom. Just out the backdoor is a very big deck with built-in table for 8+, ideal for enjoying dinner at dusk. The private lakefront on Lake Macatawa provides a large (500 square feet or so) of sandy beach (with beach toys provided by the owner). The lake has a shallow bottom for quite a while. This was ideal for our three-year old daughter to play. The owners have provided a kayak and a paddleboat to explore the lake. The home is ideally located on the west side of Big Bay. Close to both State and Tunnel park, both parks are accessible via recreational trails. For those enjoying more distant rides, there is a great path all the way to Grand Haven. Downtown Holland is only minutes away by car.
“Peaceful and beautiful Big Bay House”
The property was very clean, well maintained and easy to move into. Great location - close to the state park beach and restaurants. Great outdoor living space, beautiful views. Owners were very helpful. What I liked best was the peacefulness and the ease of entertaining in the outdoor space. There was nothing I did not like.
“Relaxing Home Close to Beaches and Lake Michigan on Lake Macataw”
We had a relaxing and fun family vacation in this spacious lakefront home on Lake Macatawa. It was very easy to spread out and comfortable to sleep as it is shady in the afternoons! Although the Lake Macatawa water was too low for us to utilize the beach with young kids, we were very close to Tunnel Park, Holland State Park, and Oval Beach and had a wonderful time at all of them. We also were within a short distance of the Marina and enjoyed watching the yachts and sailboats come in and out while the kids played in the huge shaded backyard. We rented a pontoon boat one day and toured around Lake Mac and out the channel to Lake Michigan by "Big Red". Downtown Holland had a Thursday night "family night" that we also quite enjoyed. Lots of fun had by all!
Response from the owner So grateful this family enjoyed our home and the Holland area. Not sure why our lower water levels would keep little ones from enjoying the beach in front of our home. The water in Lake Macatawa has been down for the last few years which allows children to go out some distance before reaching an overhead depth. The bottom is sandy as far out as you can walk.
“Vaction Family rental”
Stayed with our grandkids from St Louis and had a wonderful time! The home was more than we could have asked for! Loved the mix of classic cottage and new additions with all the creature comforts. The highlight was watching fireworks over the bay in the front yard on night of the 4th. Also enjoyed the sandy beach and watching all the beautiful boats coming and going from the marina just around the corner. Kids could go out in the water more than a half mile before the water reached over head. Walks to Lake Michigan, up Mount Pisgah and ice cream at the general store were also rich memories. Ottawa Beach Inn offered great food and only a 5 minute walk from the cottage. Even though the week was very hot, the mature oak trees offered welcome shade on the deck all afternoon. The home drips with class and history - a place we hope to return to for many years to come. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Ralph Gutierrez
